Not a new book but the only book so if you're going to Gabon, buy this book. It's helpful but incomplete and a few years old. One thing they got right is that Gabon has a "poorly developed tourist infrastructure ." That's why you need this book ! It really helped us plan our trip, without a travel agent or tour. Bear this in mind: any question you don't ask will have an answer you don't want to hear, so read this book but ask questions to help ensure a trip without too many headaches.

I always buy lonely planet, but they don't have for Gabon. I was really impressed with this book. Very well written and interesting and useful.

GIANT HAYSTACKSVisitors to Transylvania will return home with one abiding image: hayricks and horse and carts covered with enormous piles of hay balancing precariously. The traditional hayrick (capita de fan) is built according to age-old methods and usually by the grandmother in the family. A central wooden pole is fixed on a bed of dry leaves and the cut, drying grass is built up around the pole while granny stands on top packing the layers down. It’s highly skilful work and the shape of the haystack varies throughout Transylvania: sometimes it’s pear-shaped, sometimes quite thin and pointed, sometimes a chunky pyramid, but always with a sloping watertight top layer. The hay gradually dries in the autumn sun and then the ricks are toppled onto carts and transported to barns for the winter livestock fodder.

Historical and cultural contexts are the obvious emphasis here. Visual content, such as maps and photographs, are more pragmatic than artistic. As with most other guidebooks, this guide includes several "coaching" sections of recommended sites, activites and itineraries. Everything from how to tip to how to catch a train is included.My only complaint is slight. Because Bradt guides are so rich in content, and maintain such high standards for inclusion, new editions are frequently four or five years between. You have to hope that your destination is close to an "on" year for a new edition, or the listings might be out of date. This book was published in early 2013, so you can expect it to be relatively current until 2015 or so.The author's dedication to this region makes this book the best possible guide to its numerous, fascinating attractions.

This was the only book I used during my trip through Transylvania. It might be the only recent in-depth guidebook that focuses solely on this region of Romania. I took an intensive cultural tour, and almost every sight and location we visited is in the book (though the extreme north is not covered very well, especially the Sighetu Marmetiei area and nearby mountains).

I dislike guidebooks like this. They are essentially "what to see along the road when driving" especially here, where it covers a small section of Translyvania and then moves on to the next such area. Therefore, it's only value for people who aren't driving is to look up specific towns or villages whose names you already know, no for some basic maps of key places. I dislike the organization, where what there is to see in a town is at the end of the section on that town,This would benefit from suggested itineraries for different modes of travel and some type of list of "bests" by type, e.g., castles.

This is a beautiful book, which I purchased for a friend who is a third grade teacher. I loved the cover art and when I received the book, I thought everything about it was wonderfully done. The story is just right--not too long and not too short, neither too mild nor too grim. For those who say that this story is too harsh for eight years olds, I ask, how will children in safe environments understand what other children, from war-torn countries, have gone through? Khan has chosen her words carefully and created a believable story line--very believable. Any one of us could verify it with a little Internet research. The little boy steps up to become the man of the house and care for his mother when she is in need. The roses in the carpets--perfect, just perfect! We all can relate to the need for color when our lives are drab, and for those in dire situations, dirt, mud or sand are all they see. What touched me most was the protagonist's awareness of how his adoption through a charitable organization improved his life and gave him skills to make beauty and have hope for the future. The author of this book was able to capture just the right amount of truth for children. She is an excellent writer, and her book brought me to tears!

I am apalled this book is touted as appropriate for eight-year-old children. It is far too explicit for that age group. Jets screaming overhead dropping bombs, killing his father, the boy dreaming of being hit and dying, his sister hit by a truck her legs broken. The fact he lives in a mud hut and eats only a small portion of bread and water everyday almost seems cheerful in comparison. Then, the boy talks about the significance of each color in the rug he is weaving "white for the shroud we wrapped my father's body in"..."Red is the color of the blood of martyrs." Finally, never mind using the story as any sort of a springboard to illustrate giving and helping others less fortunate. The boy states his carpet weaving training is made possible by someone far away "a sponsor." And they even took his picture. Then he goes on to say that once he learns the trade he will be able to hold his head high for the sake of his father...who would never have taken aid from a sponsor.

"It's always the same. The jets scream overhead." is the powerful first line of this story that resonates even more forcefully in the wake of the September 11th attacks. The Roses in My Carpets is a masterful tale of a young Afghan refugee by Toronto writer Rukhsana Khan. It is based on a true story, that of the author's foster child in Peshawar, Pakistan. With the unfolding of historical events, it is probably destined to be a classic.Spare, grim and unsentimental, the story is a beautifully woven narrative of a young fatherless refugee boy caring for his mother and sister in a war-torn world. Symbolic of the loss of identity suffered by refugees, the boy remains nameless throughout the story. Movingly, he struggles to survive with his family within the sombre parameters that govern his universe. Escape finally arrives when he goes to his job as an apprentice carpet weaver. There he makes sure "there are plenty of roses in my carpets". As the story ends, hope surfaces in the young boy's dream of finding "a space, the size of a carpet, where the bombs cannot touch us."Ronald Himler's watercolour and pencil drawings look overwhelmingly familiar with the images that now flood our homes through television. I have read Roses to my four year old many times and she appreciated the opportunity to comprehend the devastating effect of war on families. I would highly recommend it to other parents and teachers.

This is a great story for any age group. My eight year old son read this book and learned more about current events than the news could have ever taught him. I used this book in my tenth grade class room when we did a unit on picture books and changing the world and my students were prompted to plan a school wide "tolerance / compassion" day so that others could learn more about people around the world.

Dealing with refugee children i must say this is a great book, it realy captures the heartache of the afgahni experience.

This book was so well written. It was great how the author was able to interview all of these women. I recommend this book to anyone of all nationalities to read this book.

The searing and important oral histories Evelina Galang gathered here from Filipinas who survived horrific enslavement by the Japanese army are worth five stars. Their stories are truly moving and humbling to read.I regret to have to deduct two stars for the lack of footnotes and a bibliography. I wish I could deduct more than two, but I don’t want my review to be more negative than positive. How did this get by Northwestern University’s history department? I don’t agree with SeattleBookMama that the book isn’t for history lovers but is for researchers. Researchers looking for citations and other sources won’t find them here.One page of text in the back explains why Galang supports an estimate of 400,000 comfort women rather than the usual 200,000. She doesn’t give any original sources herself. The explanation describes a panel she sat on. She mentions a book entitled Chinese Comfort Women, Testimonies from Imperial Japan’s Sex Slaves by Peipei Qiu. It’s part of an Oxford oral histories series. Maybe they had different sources, but they're not included or explained here.I’m trying to decide whether to add this to my library’s collection. As an oral history, it’s important. If Northwestern had published only the lolas’ stories, I’d buy it absolutely. I agree with SeattleBookMama that Galang’s frequent appearance in the story become a distraction, and I don’t think the publisher should have included many factual claims without detailed sources.

During World War II, the Japanese Imperial Army forced over 400,000 women into sexual slavery; though the Korean comfort women have been recognized for a long time, the survivors in the Philippines lived with the trauma and appalling social stigmatization for decades, unheard. Recently 173 of them, now very elderly, filed suit against the Japanese government. This collection includes interviews with 16 Filipina women whose lives were ruined by this atrocity. Thanks go to Net Galley and Northwestern University Press for the DRC, which I received early and free in exchange for this honest review. Their countrymen let them know that nobody wants anything to do with a woman that’s been touched, penetrated, harmed in many unspeakable ways by the Japanese. They were called “Japanese leftovers.” Thus, their nightmare at the hands of the enemy was worsened by a subsequent nightmare at the hands of those they thought would console them.And so as you can imagine, it’s not an enjoyable book. It isn’t intended to be.Galang is also Filipina, and she weaves her own story in with that of her subjects. I would have preferred that she restrict herself to the topic; whereas including her own memoir may be cathartic, it also slows the pace. There are also snippets of untranslated Tagalog, and although this may resonate for those that are bilingual, context didn’t make the passages clear much of the time, and so I was left with the choice to either run to my desktop, type in the passages, translate them and return to the text, or just skip them and read on. It didn’t take me long to decide on the latter.So as a general read for the lover of history, I can’t recommend this book, but for the researcher, it’s a gold mine. There is information here that you won’t find anywhere else. There are primary documents end to end here. I can imagine any number of thesis topics for which this work would be pivotal.For the researcher, this is a four star read.

Lolas' House by M. Evelina Galang is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in mid-September.This book has been a loooong time coming - ever since Galang began her interviews with the 'lolas' (a sweetened term for an elder female or grandma) in 1999 while studying abroad in Manila with St Scholastica, all sixteen of their stories (of violence, being wrongly decried as 'kura' [civilian spies working with the Filipino rebellion], constant sexual assault under the guise of them being 'comfort women' (rather than being victims of rape), bearing physical and emotional scars, and being unrecognized by the Japanese government & military that wronged them) have been begging to be told. It's a heart-rendering read, but it's well-worth understanding the 'lolas' for what they've gone through and the justified compensation and recognition they deserve.

This is a wonderful, angering and empowering book. I am a prosecutor who works with a lot of vicitms of all varieties of violence so I rarely choose to read about such heavy topics in my personal life. However, I wanted to read this book to support Evelina and this important cause. I admit to being apprehensive when I started the book. Evelina’s writing immediately eased my apprehension. Somehow she managed to take a brutal topic, a real horror and make it beautiful. Clearly not the acts committed against the Lolas, but the Lolas themselves and their strength and hope and her experiences throughout her journey to this book. I have passed this book on to my mother and recommended it to friends in book clubs. Understandably, it can be a hard sell to get people to read about rape and torture in this context, but because of her talent I’m am able to tell others that it’s truly more of an uplifting and empowering book.

Absolutely essential reading. The refusal of nations to admit their wrongs is what we all need to fight against, and Galang's writing is one small step in that ongoing struggle. Written with humanity. A must-read.

Fine intro text if you're just starting out on your TS journey. I came across it about a year after our child's diagnosis and by then I'd already run into all this information elsewhere and frankly, it doesn't go into much detail in a way that would have been really helpful. A far better resource is the recorded seminar for new families at the Tourette's Syndrome Association [...] You'll probably want to watch it a couple of times. I draw on that information constantly.

As a grandparent of a child diagnosed with TS, I found this book to be the most informative for the lay person. It touched on almost every question I had and had a great reference section for more in depth subjects. It was practical and helped with all the decisions you might have to make: how to pick a doctor, meds or not, handling child's social interactions, helping school set up a teaching plan, getting in touch with local and national support groups and organizations, etc. I was able to talk with his parents and understood what they were dealing with. They had to also confront their own feelings and appreciated being able to talk to someone who cared about them also.

Wish I had this book years ago when my daughter was first diagnosed! I recommend this book to every parent with a child with TS. There's so much more information in this book than any other book/web-site/pamphlet etc... all together in one book! I first found this book at the library and kept referring back to it that I just had to buy my own copy!Includes excellent advice on how to work with your child's school.

This is a great book for parents learning how to deal with tourette's. It gives very helpful advice and insight into dealing with the syndrome. We reference it frequently for our children.

I ended up going to a natural health practitioner and we did candida yeast cleansing, which brought up his protein levels and eliminated his symptoms. Then after a recurrence, we did it again and went on to detox mercury with iodine therapy. Mercury overstimulates dopamine. This permanently cured him. Much better than living with it.

I coordinate a program for middle school students where we do H.W. after school. One of our students this year has Tourette Syndrome (TS), which has to be frustrating to the student, his family, his friends, and his teachers. His mom gave me a copy of this book. It really shows me that every case of TS is different and may actually change a bit over time. Any educator who has a student with this disorder would benefit by read this book. It is probably a good idea even if the teacher does not have a student with TS. What happened was that in describing the symptoms, I realized that I probably had students with a mild version of TS in the past. If I had read the book, it might have helped me fit a piece into the puzzle. I am going to purchase 3 copies of this book, one for the library in my town, one for the library in the town I work in, and one for the library in the school where our H.W. Club meets.

Our household is very careful about the food we buy, which is why I was quite interested in this book by Mr. Olmstead. I was fortunate to hear the interview of him on the Diane Rehm show as well. However, I found this book to be rather frustrating, though it does contain a wealth of interesting and, at times, compelling information. We tend to buy organic whenever possible, and constantly struggle with the budget challenges that presents. So I was hopeful this book would not only provide a sort of guide map for selecting high quality foods, but would also either reassure me that the organic brand is worth while, or dissuade me from spending the extra cash on organic labeled products.Regarding the organic brand, it is never directly addressed. There are many comments that cast significant doubt on the organic label, and others that suggest you look for the label. Certainly, it depends on the food under consideration. In some cases, such as seafood, there is no organic standard. However, in others Mr. Olmstead presents the picture of a defined standard that is not enforced. I'm left pretty much where I started - choose organic when possible, even if it isn't 100% accurate. Further, it always pays to have some idea of the 'provenance' of the product - country of origin, farm, etc... even if that can be faked.I was also a little surprised to see two entire chapters devoted to meat, an entire chapter on Champagne and Scotch, an entire chapter on wines. As a book on 'food', it is really a book about seafood, olive oils, kobe beef, wine and spirits, and cheese. Not much else. I think this book speaks more to the food preferences of Mr. Olmstead than a more comprehensive treatment of the thousands of food products you'll find in a typical grocery store. What he left out could fill volumes. His often long ramblings about regional culture, specific farms and villages, his travels and his food experiences tended to obscure what I was looking for based on the title of the book. A better title might have been: "Larry's World of Food" or something like that.Bottom line - excellent information, but for a limited set of foods and beverages.

READ THIS: (reading this did make me think of the old Eat This / Not That series)- chapter 3 ('Fishy Fish') was appalling and depressing, describing the worst examples of business malfeasance and government negligence and corruption in the production and sale of ANY retail product, not just food(I'm sick of these dilettante Today Show cardiologists going on TV and demanding that all Americans eat fish at every meal. I wish I could force them to read this chapter so they will shut up.)- chapter 5 provides a fine demonstration of how European principles of collective trademarks enhance the quality of food while US trademark law degrades it- chapter 10 is the best guide you will find anywhere to the purchase of safe and healthy meat- chapter 12 provides a nice cherry to the sundae with a well deserved bashing of the FDANOT THAT:- chapter 1 is a thirty-three page harangue telling you that you MUST purchase your parmesan cheese from Parma, Italy instead of Parma, Ohio- there are hundreds of books which provide a more accurate and complete description of wine and scotch production than you will find here in chapter 7 and chapter 9; alcoholic beverages are among the most scrutinized of all consumables, so I would have appreciated a book on 'real food' spending a little less time on liquor- I think I was about eight when I figured out Log Cabin syrup was corn syrup with brown food coloring (chapter 11)- chapter 6 is the phoniest chapter, because you know after Olmsted here tells 'true gourmets' that they must demand 'Kobe beef' only from Japanese government certified farms, in his next book he will tell his readers that they must only eat food produced within 100 miles of home, (he alludes to this here on several occasions) and then probably brays to his Dartmouth students that Kobe beef is "contributing to global warming"!The perfect book to get from a library - borrow it, spend one night on each of the worthwhile chapters then take it back.
