I liked this book and I greatly admire Muhammad Yunus for his work throughout Bangladesh and other locales throughout the world. His idea is generally sound that the Western world's attitude towards the poor is misguided because the poor do have something great to offer this world and may not need the well intended training programs and clearly gigantic aid checks to dubious governments haven't done much to free people throughout the world from poverty. Therefore, we should give the poor tools they need to free themselves from poverty like Yunus banks have. However, the end of the book where he is talking about a world without war, poverty, and equal access for everyone to basic things we often take for granted in the Western world made me pause and actually prevented this from being a five star book.Damn me as cynical if you must, but a world without war is a utopian dream that is not going to come about through social business because war is on its' face a human endeavor and human beings are imperfect and fallible. I think it would be great if no child had to die of a disease we could prevent, but I think overall although social business is a good idea it's overrated because you'd need so many social businesses dedicated to poverty relief, medicine and immunization, and other enterprises that the capitalist system would have to die out instead of co-existing with the social business models. I don't quite see how the profit-making enterprises and social enterprises would co-exist.

I honestly was moved to tears during my reading of the book. It is not sentimental and the author is passionately optimistic in regards to the possibility that running non-profit endeavors, with the sole intention of the betterment of the destitute, and using a system that aims at efficiency, and through borrowing the concept of competition from the conventional market place, can solve the problem of poverty, at least slowly and gradually. Its essence is that we should encourage people to see that the meaning of life is greater than just profiting oneself and create incentives to prosper this engagement. I must say that I am converted! However, while I greatly admire Professor Yunus's aspiration and stature, his is not necessarily the best written kind of prose. There is a reasonable amount of repetition and at times perhaps there are too much details, for example. Saying this, I still highly recommend this because it is that kind of book that one wants to own even if one does not read it thoroughly.

Creating a World Without Poverty: Social Business and the Future of Capitalism, Muhammad Yunus, Public Affairs, 2007Muhammad Yunus is a hero to those of us who seek to broaden the ownership of business. As a Bangladeshi economics professor, he wanted to do something about the crushing hunger and poverty he saw around him. He gathered 42 borrowers from the village near his campus and lent them a total of $27 from his own pocket. He followed that by guaranteeing bank loans to the poor. In 1983, he started Grameen Bank, which shared with him the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize. The results, from his acceptance speech:"Today, Grameen Bank gives loans to nearly 7.0 million poor people, 97percent of whom are women, in 73,000 villages in Bangladesh. . . . Sinceit opened the bank has given out loans totaling about US $6.0 billion. The repayment rate is 99 percent. Grameen Bank routinely makes a profit. . . .58 percent of our borrowers have crossed the poverty line."Grameen Bank has become the model for a worldwide microcredit movement. By 2006, microloans had been extended to 100 million of the world's poorest families. In this book, Professor Yunus argues for a new structure, the "social business," which is "a business that pays no dividends. It sells products at prices that make it self-sustaining. The owners of the company can get back the amount they've invested in the company over a period of time, but no profit is paid to investors in the form of dividends. Instead, any profit made stays in the business--to finance expansion, to create new products or services, and to do more good for the world."Governments, charities and "profit-maximizing businesses" are not enough to solve the problems of poverty, disease and environmental degradation, Professor Yunus argues; "we need a new type of business that pursues goals other than making personal profit--a business that is totally dedicated to solving social and environmental problems."He makes a distinction between social businesses and "socially-responsible" businesses, which are intended to serve a social objective, while making a profit. They have a fatal flaw, according to Professor Yunus, because their executives "will gradually inch toward the profit-maximization goal, no matter how the company's mission is designed."The social business is intended to make a profit, but not to pay dividends. It would plan to pay back the amount invested over time, which might be from five to 20 years. Shareowners would continue to own the business after they were repaid their investment. The motive of making a profit on the shares would be replaced by pride in achieving a social objective. Many of the investors would be individuals and institutions that make charitable gifts. They would see the benefits from a business that was to return their funds, which they could use to invest in more social businesses. (However, earning enough after-tax profits to cash out investors in five to 20 years is a big hurdle for a new business. It could put the social business at a real competitive disadvantage in pricing its products and services. Most U.S. businesses don't pay any dividends, while many others keep dividends at less than a three percent yield on the shares' market value.)"Who will invest in a social business?" This question is a section of the book. The answer given is that money will come from people who would otherwise support charities, as well as from charitable foundations and from businesses that fund charitable activities. A tax exemption could provide government support for social businesses. Shares in social businesses would be traded in aftermarkets, with the value determined by "the social benefit produced," rather than profit expectations. What about capital needs larger than those served by Grameen Bank and the microcredit movement? The book lists some 25 members of the "Grameen Family of Companies," which include social businesses and support organizations. Grameen Fund provides venture capital, taking a 51% equity ownership. Grameen Business Promotion Company guarantees loans from Grameen Bank of up to $10,000 or more. Grameen has recently entered joint ventures with Danone, the world's largest yogurt company, and Intel.A huge potential project described is "to create world-class port facilities for the growing economies of Bangladesh as well as her neighbors, and to build a network of superhighways to connect those countries with the port facilities." The money would come from "social investors" or donor countries, who would later sell the project to a trust. In turn, the trust would sell "shadow shares" to poor people. These "shadow shares" would not represent ownership of the facilities but would entitle holders to any dividends declared by the trust board. Shares could be purchased on credit, to be paid from dividends. The shares could only be sold back to the trust. (If this project goes forward, perhaps Professor Yunus would consider having the shares be direct ownership, with voting rights, so that the poor families could be part of a community of business owners.)Grameen Bank's great success flies against some basic economic assumptions, according to Professor Yunus. One is that "all people are motivated purely by the desire to maximize profit." (By "fear and greed," in Wall Street terms.) Another "is the assumption that the solution to poverty lies in creating employment for all." Self-employment is the alternative supported by Grameen Bank. Millions of its borrowers have crossed the poverty line because they now have earnings from both their labor and their invested capital. (The next progression is when individuals have enough income from their capital alone that they don't need to sell their labor. They can be the ones who devote their time, and discretionary investment income, to solving social problems.)There is a brief section in the book that describes a second kind of social business, one "owned by the poor or disadvantaged" where "the social benefit is derived from the fact that the dividends and equity growth . . . will go to benefit the poor." Grameen Bank itself is "a social business by virtue of its ownership structure," since 94% of its shares are held by its borrowers. In 2006, it earned $20 million and paid dividends to its shareowners. The error of most programs to alleviate poverty, Professor Yunus writes, is that they assume that providing jobs and job skills is what is needed. "But if you spend enough time living among the poor, you discover that their poverty arises from the fact that they cannot retain the genuine results of their labor. And the reason for this is clear: They have no control over capital. The poor work for the benefit of someone else who controls the capital." (Beyond microcredit could be broadening the ownership of capital so that the formerly poor can become independent of the return on their labor.)

I have wanted to buy this book and even read any of M.Yunus' books for a long time now.For year, I kept on thinking about the business world and how it lacks a humanitarian foundation. All of these and other ideas have been crossing my mind. When i finally purchased the book, i couldn't believe that ideas like micro-credit and no-dividend self sustained companies actually exist. Not just that, but they have been put into action for more than 30 years! Please give this book a deep read. It combine all of the social disciplines and brilliantly blend them with those of the financial scientific ones.I urge every business man, business student, intellectual, politician, banker, thinker, Christian, Jew, Muslim, Buddhist, and to simply any one who wants to see things differently.

Full with optimism and world-changing ideas, Yunus emerges with a rough formula to save the world. It is far from hot air. Data and true results back up what has been a spectacular journey for Yunus and the Grameen organization. I've also read "Building Social Business" and though I find some concepts repeated, the reiteration is useful in forcing me to remember certain concepts. I would recommend this and his other books to a friend readily. The world needs changing, so let's do it. Let peace reign.

So the book arrived very quickly however, the description did not say that the book was an unedited advance copy. I thought I was ordering a finished book, you know, like I've seen in the bookstore.

Poor translation and abysmal eclectic view of Japanese culture - and if not, please, ive no interest in visiting. Can’t believe the shallow expose of philosophy, sexual attributes (and am no prude)...whomever wrote rosy reviews on this is merely pandering to Japanese sophomoric philandering. Even the philosophical rants, while lucid, have all been heard before in countless other coverage. Perhaps the translation is part of the problem - either way, complete bore.

Ostensibly, this novel begins with a young man who is seeking a woman he has known who apparently had entered the strange world of a cult, which he then joins in an attempt to find her. As he progresses in his quest, the reader is exposed to a variety of topics, ranging from sex and violence to religion, astrophysics and neuroscience. This gives the author the opportunity to write about all kinds of subjects, with long discourses ranging from good and evil to Japanese politics, from war criminals to peace. Perhaps inspired by the 1995 sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway, the novel is an examination of what attraction extremism has to most people. The reader has to plow through more than 500 pages of this material, struggling to grasp all the meanings and context in what starts out as a simple love story. And the task is hardly easy. It takes a lot of effort and for that reason it is rated lower than one would expect a book written by this author, whose past works received [deservedly] higher ratngs. Nevertheless, Nakamura pushes us to the limits in his writings, which have made him one of the top Japanese authors. For this reason, for those willing to stick with it, Cult X is recommended

Fuminori Nakamura’s CULT X is one of the most disturbing novels I have ever read. Noir hardly does this gritty, dark, provocative novel justice.Nakamura peels back the Japan’s façade, the gentile, hard-working, striving, respectful society, and instead, introduces us to world of fringe religious cults. Matsuo leads the almost accidental group, an intellectual, peaceful assembly whose devotees listen to his far-ranging sermons. Lectures, really, covering black matter, philosophy, DNA, the collective unconscious, etc. The splinter group, Cult X, is led by the apostate Sawatari , who presides over Monday orgies that include rape. The seminal issue is that both groups brainwash their believers. Both groups are successful, but to what respective end?Cult X is at the center of a massive terror attack on home soil. The purpose of this attack is to support a conservative, war-like political administration. Shadowy government agents and over zealous police wait in the wings to enable or thwart the attacks.Easily lost in this epic is a love story. Narazaki searches for his enigmatic girlfriend, Ryoko, and it is this search that leads him through the labyrinth of these cults.Think of Fuminori Nakamura as his generation’s Yukio Mishima. Mishima, who came of age during World War II, never adjusted to Japan’s non-militaristic stance during the years following the war. Nakamura, while not advocating for the samurai spirit that Mishima put forward, offers intriguing arguments that question Japan’s role in the age of terror.

Reminiscent of Pyncheon's _Gravity's Rainbow_ as well as Yukio Mishima, this ambitious novel tries to make you think by making you feel: disgust, despair, lust, wonder, hope, love and nihilism are all presented as ways of interfacing with, and maybe understanding, the chaos of physical reality. It's carefully structured, too, pitting a kind and honest (but not too perfect) cult leader against another who is cruel and manipulative. Beneath the feverish and sometimes off-putting plot there's a passionate message about what it does and doesn't mean to be Japanese, to be human, and to be alive. All that was pretty interesting. But I found it hard to take the author's blinkered gender perspective. I haven't read a book in a long time that was so firmly rooted in its belief that men get to penetrate and pontificate, while women get to be penetrated and listen, possibly at the same time. His female characters have agency and everything, but all they want is to save men, get laid by men, sacrifice themselves to/for men . . . Even if his evil character hadn't had the power to magically make women like being raped, I would have found this depressing. And since his good character likes playfully sexually harassing people, I have to think the author is making some conscious argument here.Still . . . it was a thought provoking book. I may have been infuriated, even revolted, but there was plenty to chew on. I'm not sorry to have read it. I'm struggling to think who I'd recommend it to--certainly not my mother, my daughter, or anyone's impressionable young son--but there were definitely things I liked about it. Read at your own discretion.

Author Bill O’Neill has a definite proficiency when it comes to compiling the myriad of useful and educational trivia books he’s published so far. While all of them have been meticulously organized to enhance the reading experience, his Great Book of the various states series I feel is his best since they each epitomizes how great America already is.In each of his Great State books the author sticks to a proven format which consists of the following six chapters [albeit the order might be somewhat different]:In each of the six chapters this book contains:1- State’s History2- State’s Pop Culture3- State’s Attractions4- State’s Inventions, Ideas and More5- State’s Biggest Haunts, Supernatural and Other Weird Facts6- State’s SportsMr. O’Neill begins each chapter by taking an item regarding its topic and gives his readers a brief, yet informative description of about it, this is followed by some random facts, which is then culminated by his giving some questions related to the information which the chapter has just given, naturally the answers are given as well. With six states already written, Mr. O’Neill has decided to move on to writing books on an International level; and what country had he chosen to write about first. I believe, he has befittingly chosen to write about the country of his apparent ancestry, that of Ireland; and in doing so, has chosen to stick to this same format. And to get an idea of the multitude of items the author has written about, all one needs to do is to read the author’s own description, or better yet, peruse the preview pages for a complete listing of the topics being discussed in the pages of this book. For given his readers and myself, an enlightening trivia book about the country and people of Ireland, without giving any blarney in the process, I’m happy to give the author, Bill O’Neill, the 5 STAR he’s receiving.

I have read and reviewed many books by this author, and one common theme is the ease in which you read them. There are no unnessary or intentionally hard words to understand, and the writing is very straightforward. You learn quite a bit about Ireland in reading this book, and it's humorous as well. You will enjoy reading it. Recommended.

Let me start off by saying I just love Bill O'Neill's kindle books. liked so many things about the Great Book of Ireland that there are too many to list. But... here a few Halloween originated in Ireland. I got to admit I didn’t see that one coming. Also that Ireland is the only country in the world to have a Harp a musical instrument as their National Symbol. I thought like most people would that they would have a Shamrock instead. And last but not least My favorite James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan was born there. That’s it from me if you want to know more and believe there is a lot more you will just have to read the book.

This book contains so many interesting fact about everything Irish. My genetic background is Irish and I was amazed at all the things I learned about Ireland and the Irish people that I would not have known without this book. Fascinating to learn how many things in America that were invented, made and brought to America by the Irish people. Loved reading every page!

This book does have some interesting and fun info, but it is also so full of typos, exclamation points, question marks and the like, that it makes one wonder how accurate the information is. It is also written at about a 5th-grade reading level.

Whether Irish or not, The Great Book of Ireland is an enjoyable and informative book. If you are not Irish yourself, you surely know someone who is and will want to tell them about Bill O'Neill's Irish facts and fun. Personally, I recommend it.

Fun, educational and interesting. I though I knew somethings about Ireland but learned alot. I received this ebook in exchange for my opinion. I give it 5 out of 5 stars.

Review

From the reviews:“To describe in 18 chapters the current status in a wide field, a dazzling list of no less than 44 distinguished authors has been assembled. Fortunately, the role of the editors has continued well beyond the point of producing their own chapters to ensure that these different contributions are reasonably well integrated with a useful index….The editors’ assertion that the experiment of focusing a beam of electrons down to an atomic scale and measuring its scattering has spectacular outcomes is most abundantly proved here.”--Archie Howie, Microscopy and Microanalysis“The book opens with a magnificent 90-page history of STEM by S.J. Pennycook, which traces the story of the instrument from von Ardenne’s microscope of the late 1930s to such very recent innovations as the confocal mode of operation. … Very readable, lavishly illustrated and extremely thorough, this will remain a key publication on the history of the STEM.” (Ultramicroscopy, Vol. 116, 2012)

I own a dozen TEM books, and I must say this is the most comprehensive STEM book that I have. The book reviews the history of STEM first, and then goes over basics of STEM imaging, the Ronchigram, simulation/image interpretation, EELS and EDS. The book also covers various applications of STEM and Cs-corrected STEM to materials characterization with plenty of newest data. Leading microscopists contributed to the book. I wish that the book had a chapter on principles of Cs correction. ..the book discusses very little about Cs correction.
