This was a quick and enjoyable read; however, it's not a mystery that will keep you in suspense or require your full attention. I enjoyed the manner in which the life of the deceased teen was included. I'm not a fan of graphic sexual "romance" books. I have read a few books by this author (usually when I want a light read) and keep forgetting that that the sex scenes are highly detailed. I prefer that aspect to be left to the imagination of the reader. .
If you enjoy long, drawn out chapters filled with character background, details, and feelings, feelings, feelings, then this book is for you. If you're looking for a fast-paced thriller, you should pass. I will admit, I was interested in the characters and developing story, but the meandering writing just took too long to get anywhere. I kept skimming pages looking for something to actually happen. (aside from the initial problem)I hate to give a scathing review, but all the high ratings had me excited that I'd found a new author. LOTS of romance building but not enough movement to keep me reading.
What an absurd book. It's a perfect example of why I dislike crime fiction by romance writers, usually women. Give me a David Baldacci or Vince Flynn novel any day over this. I mean, the man's brother has just been murdered and Ellie swoons over his muscular frame. She grows warm and gets little twinges in her belly when he's searching for clues to the killer and accidentally touches her hand. Good grief! What might have been a decent plot is ruined by all the swooning and sighing in all the wrong places. This is a romance book trying to be a crime/detective novel. Sorry I wasted my money and read less than half.
The blurb is so well written that there's no need to bother anybody with my own recap.The plot was multilayered and unraveled gradually, offering a well structured suspense part with several twists. Despite the many and different layers, no loose ends remained, which led to a harmonic and rewarding suspense part.The main characters were likeable, although I would've enjoyed a deeper and more detailed character development for the leads. I think it's rather unusual to know as many details about the hero/ine as about the secondary characters. In any case, the subcharacters were interesting and added an additional flavor to the plot.The book offered a lot of detailed descriptions, which were often useless or even superfluous. Especially since these didn't help to create atmosphere. Sometimes the style reminded me of a report, not a suspense romance. Anyhow, this lack of ambience was the biggest drawback of the book.In any case, this was an entertaining book and a nice time filler.

He finds that handling the traumatized children is a huge challenge...but he also discovers help from Ellie Ross, Julia's mother, and eventually from his siblings Hannah and Mac.But none of them are really equipped to handle the long term care of the children. What will happen to them? And how does a case Lee was working on figure into the murders? Why is someone stalking and threatening Ellie, an administrative assistant at the law firm?Hour of Need (Scarlet Falls) is told from multiple perspectives, including one narrative from a man named Donny, presumably the killer/stalker. But who is he working for? And what mysteries in Lee's life will lead them all to the answers?A case of bullying amongst a group of ice skaters, a girl's presumed suicide, and some parents willing to do anything for their guilty daughters add intriguing layers to the story. As each potential killer is exposed, I thoroughly enjoyed trying to guess who was behind it all. The surprising reveal was satisfying, and so were the romantic developments between Grant and Ellie. I found the interludes between them fun to watch, even as they thought that any future between them was impossible due to Grant's eminent return to Afghanistan.As with every book I have read by this author, I thoroughly enjoyed the mix of mystery and romance. 5 stars.
