After ranting on my blog that I couldn't find a book, today I picked up one that satisfied my story-tooth. The Pull of the Moon by Elizabeth Berg is a brilliantly conceived, beautifully written story about a woman's journey, from what happens to us at 12 to the transformation that comes with our 50s. Nan is none of us, yet my guess is that each of us will find something to identify with as she goes walkabout from her marriage. She doesn't leave her husband as much as she goes looking for her lost self.Talking about being part of the "bridge" generation, she says, "We flowered in the sixties, but the spirit of the fifties was deep in us." That identity split may make this a book that works more for those of us over 50 than younger women. As Nan travels about, she connects with strangers who help her find pieces of herself that got lost along the way.One of the heart-breaking stories she hears comes from an 86-year-old farm woman who shows her poems her husband wrote to her. After he died, she found them buried in a drawer, apparently not thinking they were actually good enough to give to her.I take back my rant ... apparently I haven't been looking in the right places. And for the one-star reviewers, I understand your criticisms. Few of us have the resources (and the patient husbands) that would make this journey possible. But, as someone who lost her husband at the beginning of her 60s, I recognize so many of the feelings of losing pieces of myself without even realizing it. I remember a day after he died when I realized that I truly didn't know what I wanted to eat. After 40 years of marriage, my first thought was always, "What would he want?" It has taken 10 years, but I'm starting to recognize my own tastes and needs.

Men, you have complained and whined about not understanding the mind of a woman. Young women, you don't know what is going on with your mother. Now you will. A woman decides to just up and go on a road trip to nowhere and finds herself and is the better for it, and so is her husband. She writes him every day about what's inside her. She journals every day. When she finds the peace that has always eluded her, she is able to go home. But there is so very much more to this story. You will be thankful to have read it.

Elizabeth Berg's book was an enjoyable, easy read that gave a wonderful insight into the beautiful sentiments and insightful thinking that goes on in the mind of (some?) women. Not to say that all women think as the main character Nan does, but certainly it offered one vantage point.Berg is a very gifted writer. She must be an artist, for she writes with a visual awareness seen usually only by advanced artists and photographers. But Berg goes beyond the artists by articulating so beautifully what she sees.I'm glad I discovered this book. It's given me a great respect and a deeper wonder for the exquisite, rich, delightful, delicate, emotional, feminine, strong, complicated, determined, and unique way of thinking that is wonderfully and distinctly different from my own as a man. Highly recommended for any man who seeks to better understand treasure his bride.

Elizabeth Berg writes so deeply about being a woman, a woman's experience, the uniqueness of living in our skin, and also about aging, I just don't know how to praise her enough. Pull of the Moon is as deep as Gilead by Marilynne Robinson (although a lot faster-paced, thank God, and wine-out-your-nose funny in places, too. I read a lot of the good stuff out loud to my husband, but when the main character in Moon describes a man's equipment (sanitized for Amazon) as "looking like a grub worm," well, that one I couldn't share.)A little backstory of my own. I loved her style, but when I got to Author TruLuv, I was pretty disappointed. And then when I downloaded a sample of her latest, Night of Miracles, I was hoping she went back to the more profound writing I loved. Doesn't look like it. I didn't buy the full book. But I went looking for some of her older ones, and bought Pull of the Moon (2010) and oh, what talent. I don't know if she, in recent years, decided to go a little easier on herself or what, but her earlier books (We Are All Welcome Here, Never Change, Talk Before Sleep, and The Year of Pleasures) are just exquisite.

This novel is not a stereotypical look of a woman in menopause. Nan comes to the decision that in order to stay married she needs to take an unplanned and unmapped trip. All the while she writes letters to her husband to stay in touch. What a delicious idea. I am going to guess that her quest for some kind of knowledge about herself is a dream of many a woman, menopausal or not. I found the book extremely enjoyable and the tone was on right on target. I ended up writing down 13 quotes that had an impact on me to keep for prosperity and for further ponder. If I included all the quotes, I would get in trouble for fair use, you will just have to buy the book! I will share one that was particularly insightful. Nan asks herself, “where have you been?” And then, “I meant to come back.” Powerful, right? Wives and mothers give it all to their families over many, many years. They essentially put their life on a shelf, willingly, in order to give what is needed to their family. When the kids grow up and the family’s needs are gone, she needs to find a way back to herself. It’s simply common sense. You can not ignore something for years and years and then expect to simply pick it up again. For many women, the realization that she has to get to know herself again is a bit of a surprise. In The Pull of the Moon, we see through Nan the way ONE woman decided to come back to herself. It might not be your way or my way but it is a way. The book serves as an example or maybe even an encouragement to women that they are worth the time and the work to figure out what will make them happy later in life.

“Today is a very special Wednesday,” Ms. Flowers said to our class. “Can anyone tell me why?”My hand shot up high in the air. “Because I changed my underpants this morning!” I shouted out proudly, without even waiting to be called on.The whole class burst out laughing.“As you can see, Hank,” Ms. Flowers said, “we are all very pleased for you. But your underpants are not exactly what I had in mind.”Before she could call on anyone else, our classroom door swung open, and Principal Love came in. He was carrying a tall glass tank with a bunch of leafy green plants at the bottom. As usual, he was wearing his Velcro sneakers, which squeaked when he walked in.“Class, everyone say hello to Principal Love,” Ms. Flowers said.“Good morning, Principal Love,” we all said at the same time.“And don’t forget to say good morning to Fred,” he answered, pointing to the tank. “Fred’s a little sleepyhead in the morning, aren’t you, buddy?”I squinted my eyes and looked at the tank. Who or what was Fred? Suddenly, a green blob with a pinkish belly and white spots on its back sprang out from behind a plastic log and attached itself to the side of the glass. “There you are, you little froggy,” Principal Love said. Then, turning to us, he added, “He wants to say hello because he’s going to be a member of your class until next Monday.”“Does he know that we have a big spelling test this Friday?” my best friend Ashley Wong asked.“Yeah, it’s full of hard words like ‘beautiful,’” my other best friend Frankie Townsend added.“That’s not a hard word for him,” Principal Love said, “because he is such a beautiful frog.”“You call that thing beautiful?” Nick McKelty snickered. “It’s all green and bumpy.”“Green is my favorite color,” Katie Sperling said. “And besides, I think frogs are cute.”“I like to watch them suck bugs right out of the air and swallow them whole,” Luke Whitman said. That didn’t surprise me, because Luke likes everything gross. The grosser the better.“Well, my pal Fred here likes to dine on crickets,” Principal Love said. Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out a plastic container that had a whole bunch of crickets hopping around inside.“Since I’m going to be away at a conference, Ms. Flowers has kindly agreed to have Fred stay in your classroom until I return. So I’ve brought him enough dinner to keep his tummy nice and full while I’m gone.”“Eeuuwww,” Katie Sperling said. “I can’t believe he wants to eat those gross things.”“He probably thinks cheeseburgers are gross,” Ashley pointed out to her.Everyone laughed. It was going to be fun to have a frog in our class. I especially liked having him there because it meant that I wasn’t going to be the slowest reader anymore. I’m not very good at reading, but even I can read better than a frog.“I promised Principal Love that we would all take very good care of Fred,” Ms. Flowers said.“He is my special pet, a White’s tree frog,” the principal explained. “I’ve had him for eight years.”“That makes him exactly our age,” Frankie said.

This is a great chapter series for beginning to moderate readers. My 3rd grade daughter is always looking for chapter books that keep her interested and that are not to advanced for her AR testing. She (and I) find Hank so sweet and enduring. She really relates to his struggles and always trying to fit in. I highly recommend them!

Excellent book for kids with dyslexia! My son immediately picked this up and began reading it with much more ease than regular typed books. I asked him what the difference was and he said that it was clear and he could see it better and there was less shrinking and growing of the words!! Huge win for the dyslexic community! Thanks!

Got these Hank books for our 8 - 9 year old Grandson who did not like to read.... now you can't stop him.... he even woke up two hours early before the school bus came in order to read more chapters.... these Hank books by Henry Winkler and their special Font have opened up a whole new world for our Grandson..... Thank you Fonzie...... Get these books, you will not be disappointed even if your child is an avid reader... Highly Recommended to all.....

My grandson is a reluctant reader and school recommended a scheduled reading time over the summer. His teacher mentioned the 'Here's Hank' series. He has read the first 2 and is starting the 3rd. He enjoys these stories and his reading fluency has improved. He has a younger brother and a new baby brother. We asked him to read the books to his brothers. He only reads a page or two each time but his younger brother asks him to read more. He seems to be less hesitant to read and has picked up the books to read on his own. These books seem to help.

Great books for Dyslexia children! My grandson is able to read these books. We have #1 - #8 his gold is to finish them before school lets out. He turned 8 in July! He says he can see the words clearer in these books.

Love these books! They are easy to read and understand for any child. I needed to find chapter books for my 9 yr old with ADHD Where he is able to read alone and understand then take Accelerated Reader tests on. I was a bit worried about the length of book but words are large and it's easy reading where it's not overwhelming to him. I wish there were more to the series. I preordered the new one to come out in a few months.

Great book. My grandson isn’t into reading but he read this book with out a lot of resistance my grandson has about a 3 rd grade reading level

Hank is my hero

This is a very good book, but the .azw ebook that Amazon is selling is a very poorly done scan. Rather than setting the text to flow to the size of the reader's screen, you're looking at fixed-size images of the paper pages, and have to scan up and down to read each page.I ended up buying a second copy, as an .epub, from Google Play books, which is formatted as an ebook should be.Can't recommend the book enough, if you're interested in the topic. But don't buy the ebook from Amazon until they fix their formatting.

I liked the idea and was presented in a very entertaining manner. I'm a fan of proas of all kinds, what I'missing is some more background information regarding the design of the hull. How lenghth and width impacts sail performance, or space between ama and a hull. Whats with the load and the relationship and transfer of load. Asymetric hull also is a very intereating approach and there is missing info on the relationship between lenghth, width and curvature. There are 3 designs and plans included, all of them targeting wide sailor base. All of the beautifull too. Goes through basic boatbuilding techniques and I specially liked the rigging section. After all it's a dierking rig that's most intetesting. I would like that this book would have a sequel, expanding the waapa concept into a cruiser. Overall a very inspiring book and a rare one on the topic of sailing outriggers.

After procrastinating for a long time I decided to build a sailing outrigger of my own design. After going through the process of discovering lots of little nuances of their design, I came across Gary Dierking's website. I just had to buy the book and I'm glad I did. It is up to date and I can tell there are lots of ideas that Gary is passing along from other designers he is in touch with. I am now building two models of canoes prior to the full size one. I don't think I could have done it without the information in this book.

I recall the Malibu Outriggers from the early sixties on Alamitos Bay and Long Beach Harbor in Southern California before the advent of the Hobies and other beach cats. These designs in this book have been recaptured from the original museum pieces and working designs still in use in some parts of the world that go back in time thousands of years. They have been re-engineered and presented in a form that anyone with minimal skills and DIY abilities could emulate. There is still a lot to be learned from these traditional designs from Polynesian and other islanders. I hope to see a whole new generation of boats and multihull designers result from this fantastic book!

This book does two things for me, and perhaps for you too. First, it fills a function by standing alongside other "build your own boat" books, and especially canoe books; Bradshaw, Payson, and Dierking, all writers of build-your-boat books accessible to amateurs, each filling a niche, and each forming the core of the essential library for a variety of different types of people attracted to the water (and who can say it better than Melville's Ishmael on page one of "Moby Dick"?). The book in particular is a strong contribution to the do-it-yourself movement, a vital movement in a world of a lot of vague "movements." Here is one you can out your hands on, or rather wrap your hands around -- a tool, a sheet, a piece of wood that will be starting its second life. Doable, affordable adventure is possible for the common person -- this is necessary, so start now -- and can well start on the top of your garage work bench. The second thing this book does is solve a lot of problems. I'm no old salt, I just built a couple of outrigger canoes on my own with no guidance. And, I find that most of my major errors could have been avoided with this straight-forward, complete, and occasionally witty book. --wt

I daydream about building and sailing my own proa. However, I don't have the space, the time, the skill, or the energy to actually build one. I ordered and read Building Outrigger Sailing Canoes solely for the vicarious experience and knowledge involved in constructing a proa. My imaginary proa project came off without a hitch.

This is the second copy of this book I have owned. The first one was loaned out and never returned. If you want to have a doable project, a boat of your own, this is a great book for the home builder. Good history of the designs and of out riggers, construction, rigs all the parts are there, you just need to do it. Cleaning the garage now for a winter build.

I built a small outboard Skiff and now wish I had constructed an outrigger canoe after reading the book. It is a clearly written treatise on the subject. Next boat, I guess!
