I was really interested in this book for two reasons. First, it allows modern Lutherans (LCMS and LCWS) to move away from their typically myopic, one-sided christology that sees the incarnation in Anselmian terms wherein Christ is born to "pay the price" to satisfy the wrath of an angry Father who needs to punsih someone to let us off the hook for our sins both original and actual, thus pitting God's love against His justice. While there is some truth to this theory of atonement, it is far too narrow. It hardly is representative of the great tradition of the Church (or the Scriptures).The second benefit of this book is that it sets the groundwork for productive talks between Eastern Orthodox and Lutherans. For the Orthodox, God's economic dealings with humans in Christ extend far beyond the satisfaction model of the West. Following the Scriptures and the Fathers, the Orthodox stress that God became man that man might become God. For the Orthodox, the humanity's end and purpose is theosis, or deification. Union With Christ deals explicitly with this theme in Luther, and so opens up a welcome path for dialogue.Other books of similar interest include: Salvation in Christ: A Lutheran-Orthodox Dialogue by John Meyendorff (Editor), et al; Heaven on Earth: A Lutheran-Orthodox Odyssey by Robert Tobias; Christus Victor by Gustaf Aulen; Common Ground, by Jordan Bajis; and On the Incarnation, by Saint Athanasius.Enjoy!

Interesting reading.Different from traditional Luther Theology.

Luther's quotes are worth the price of the book. His understanding of justification in terms of union with Christ is part of the "depths" I'm talking about.

The book gives a new and deep perspective on Luther and the interpretation of his concepts of salvation and Gods love. Easy to read and understand.

What is most fascinating about this book is the fact that deification or theosis becomes a crucial component of Luther's doctrine of justification. For too long, the idea of theosis has remained obscure and unknown within Western Christianity, while it is an important piece of Eastern Orthodox theology. Furthermore, this idea has it's roots in Patristic teaching and the idea itself is taught not only in the Scriptures, but in early Fathers such as Irenaeus, Origen, Athanasius, Chrysostom, and even Augustine. The Finnish interpretation is fascinating because it argues that Luther had more in common with the Eastern theologian Gregory Palamas, then he did with Aquinas or Calvin.The main thrust of the Finnish view is that Jesus Christ is actually present in faith. This results in not just an extrinsic and forensic justification, the doctrine promulgated by the Reformers, but also results in an intrinsic renewal that actually makes the repentant sinner just. Thus, the Finnish view teaches both extrinsic and intrinsic renewal at justification, and not the common reformation of extrinsic justification alone. This both..and theology is basically the same teaching expounded by the early Fathers and is common in Patristic theology.This understanding of justification corrects the later Lutheran teaching advocating only forensic justification and allows justification to be a gradual process, and not just a one time event. In addition, sanctification and justification become more closely related and not two separate and distinct phenomena that do not relate with each other. The common teaching of the Reformer's makes sanctification a result of justification and therefore one's works are only a product of one's justification, but not related to it. The Finnish view allows for an interrelation between justification and sanctification that makes our works, the ones performed by Christ present in our faith, justifying.This book is important because it opens up new avenues of communication between the Orthodox and the Lutherans and allows for fruitful ecumenical discussion. Also, it will also be beneficial in the ecumenical dialogue between the Lutherans and the Catholic Church since theosis has not been completely ignored by the Church in the West. The only problem I have with this book is that the Reformation doctrine of sola fide is not described in detail, and no one takes the time to explain how the Finnish view can still accomodate this teaching. Overall, this is an excellent work and one I believe most Protestant's should take the time to read.

Is this provocative work primarily a product of investigation of Luther's thought or of endeavor to ecumenical dialogue? Although the authors of this book ardently assert that in Luther the notion of 'participation' and/or 'divinization' is a central leitmotiv, it doesn't necessarily seem like that. The concept of sanctification is mentioned more frequently than that of 'participation' and/or 'divinization' in the works of Luther. And the more, while we can find incessantly remarks about sanctification from his pre-Reformation era to post-Reformation one, the proofs on which the authors rely are not seemingly so consistent a leitmotiv in Luther's thought. Of course, Luther unceasingly stressed upon the importance of the presence of God, but there is some difficulty to equate it automatically with the notion of 'participation' and/or 'divinization.' Luther seems much more interested in emphasizing 'esse-ad' aspect than 'esse-in' aspect to avoid danger of medieval scholastic ontology. His stress upon the presence of God is much more affected by his peculiar eschatological thought than concern about 'being' that has been accentuated throughout this book by the various authours. So, while we may agree there is a similarity between Luther's thought and Eastern Orthodox in 'participation' and/or 'divinization,' there is a considerable difficulty to think that it is his central leitmotiv that governs all other thought in Luther. In spite of such a defect, this is the book one must read if he want to get new insight in Luther scholarship. In my opinion, it is inevitable for any serious Luther reader. While Luther by Oberman is still remained unsurpassed and unrivalled, this work can be regarded as second only to Oberman's work in recent Luther scholarship.

I am endlessly fascinated by the rough-and-tumble politics of America's 19th century and the colorful, sometimes absurd characters who rose to prominence. And, as a Civil War buff, I enjoy reading about the various commanders both great and small. Among the books in my ever-growing collection this is a true delight. Pillow was a wealthy lawyer and planter who knew the right people in high places and finagled commands of great responsibility in both the Mexican and Civil Wars despite lacking military training or, apparently, common sense. Yet he was recklessly brave and his men - some of them - and his public - most of it - adored him. Every page of this highly readable biography is packed with documented facts that boggle the mind, such that a certain level of wryness in the prose style is unavoidable. But this is far more than a "gee whiz" account, as the authors find evidence to dispel some of the worst disasters for which Pillow has been blamed, especially the surrender of Ft. Donelson in 1862. A self-promoter, brown-noser, and back-stabber he may have been, and it came back to haunt him even when he may not have deserved it. You will probably be most amazed to think Gideon Pillow had as good a chance to be President as some who made it, like Zachary Taylor or Franklin Pierce.

Pillow was a key player in the early stages of the war but very few people know his story. This book offers a very good insight to the vain Pillow, the man, politician and General. He is also an example of never giving up. He lost a lot during the war but never really believed he was "wrong." A good book to read.

Good book - used for genealogy purpose

Gideon Pillow is someone most people who study the Civil War or antebellum politics have heard of, but not much is ever said of him. Some might know him as the General who fled Ft. Donelson or the guy who helped get James K. Polk elected and became a general in the Mexican War, but is that all he did? After reading this biography you'll learn he did a lot more. If you're like me you only have negative opinions of Pillow and might not be very interested in learning more about him, but I urge you to reconsider. This biography is very fair handed in its criticism and praise. In the end Pillow was an ultimate failure in warfare, but not in life.

Read this book in college after taking the author"a class. It was incredibly boring. The most uninteresting civil war book I ever read.

The information in this study guide is okay. It would be a great study guide to start with. Unfortunately, I found the Math and Aviation/Naval sections to be extremely lacking. A large portion of the math test is word problems (some of them complicated) and this only goes over the basics. It doesn’t help with thinking through problems, so if math is an issue for you I would suggest additional material. The Aviation/Nautical section also just didn’t have enough information. This section is tough to study for though because you really just need to memorize as many facts as possible.Other than those issues, this book is set up well without all the “fluff” of other study guides. So, yes, it’s a great starting point, but you’re going to need more material in hopes of getting a high score.

Sufficient book. I used only this to study and passed for the Marine Corps with a 6-6-6. The questions about Naval history on the actual exam were much more specific than the information provided in the book, so you may need to read up on that somewhere else.

This product was very helpful for me. Everything from the descriptions, to the examples, to the practice tests was very helpful. The descriptions and diagrams were especially helpful. However, I would personally prefer there to be more examples.

It only covered about half the material on the version of the test I took. The practice test in the book was easier than the actual test. It's a decent supplement but should not be the only study material you use

I just love this book! It is not a textbook, but rather examples of CBC and chemistries with explanations, which is exactly what I needed.

That wasn't exactly what I was expecting, but I really like this book. It's a collection of different real clinical cases with blood work and describtion of clinical findings. It's set up that way so you could make you differential list first and than compere with autors comments and explanations. This allow you to be come more confident with reading bloodwork results!

This is NOT the textbook, it is a thin book filled with scenarios to analyze. Still useful for studying, but needed the required textbook for class.

The Panama Canal is not the first book in the Wonders of the World series we've purchased. Thus I was dumbfounded to find the inaccuracies and outright bias with which The Panama Canal ends.I am a trained medical scientist, a member of the American Chemical Society's medicinal and analytical divisions - one with a lifetime love of history. Thus, when I read "Black Carribeans suffered a higher rate of death from accidents and disease than any other group in the Canal Zone" I want to see the supporting evidence for that claim, especially as the author blames this disparity on official US government policy of segregation.The eradication of yellow fever and control of malaria in the Panama Canal Zone under the lead of William Gorgas is one of the finest accomplishments of the United States Public Health Service, one for which we remain grateful even today. One recent report from Harvard University's Contagion program states:"Gorgas's success in Panama was as dramatic as in Cuba: by 1906, he eradicated yellow fever and contained malaria during the canal's 10-year construction period. Gorgas's sanitary workers drained, or covered with kerosene, all sources of standing water to prevent mosquitoes from laying their eggs and larvae from developing; fumigated areas infested with adult mosquitoes; isolated disease-stricken patients with screening and netting; and constructed quarantine facilities. In major urban centers, new domestic water systems provided running water to residents, thereby eliminating the need for collecting rain water in barrels, which had provided perfect breeding sites for mosquitoes carrying yellow fever.The US government's $20 million investment in the sanitation program also provided free medical care and burial services to thousands of employees. In addition, Gorgas's sanitation department dispensed approximately one ton of prophylactic quinine each year at 21 dispensaries along the Panama Canal route and added hospital cars to trains that crossed the Isthmus. Each year, hospitals treated approximately 32,000 workers, and 6,000 were treated in sick camps."[...]I have no doubt that more blacks suffered accidents & illness while working on the Panama Canal than did whites. Most of the lower paid jobs were filled by minorities from all over the world - Indians, Chinese and yes, Caribbeans. Most of the engineers were from the United States and white. There were very few black engineers anywhere in the world in 1903. But to describe that higher accident and illness rate as a result of racism is a total fallacy. More importantly, I have found no reliable statistics that bear out Mann's assertion that Caribbean workers suffered any higher rates of injury/illness than Indian workers or other ethnic groups.In 1903 - the same year the US took over construction of the Panama Canal - a group of people in North Pownal, Vermont, suffered a much higher rate of accident and illness than their neighbors. Their children received a poor education and were often forced into dangerous work by age 10. These people were mostly immigrants and many did not speak English. They lived in substandard housing. They had little hope of ever leaving their dead end jobs or earning much more than they were making. You can read their story in Counting on Grace. Make no mistake, this is a story that was repeated in virtually every town and city in New England in 1903. And it is not a story about racism or disparate treatment because of color. It is a story about poverty, low pay and lack of rights for workers. That, too, is a story that is with us even today.I was further dumbfounded to read that in Mann's estimation the building of the Panama Canal provided no military advantage to the US. Certainly the US Navy would disagree with her assessment. The Panama Canal was vital to US and Allied interests during WWII and made a response to the destruction of the US Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor possible months earlier than would have otherwise occurred.Nothing pains me more than to see the rewriting of history taught to children in order to push some "politically correct" agenda. We've plenty of incidents of real bias that none need be invented. This is one Wonders of the World book that will not be used in my classroom. And I'll be very cautious about buying any others in the series.Not recommended.

I purchased this book as part of the preparation for taking my 6yo and 9yo on a cruise with a full Canal transit. The reading level is appropriate for older elementary children and the illustrations are quite beautiful. This is definitely a children's book, albeit one aimed at older kids.I agree with previous reviewers that there is a definitive slant to the history provided by the author. Were this the only resource we were using to learn about the Canal, I would have felt compelled to tweak it to remove some of the author's bias. Instead, we are opting to explore several resources about the Canal, comparing and contrasting as we go. So far our two favorites are this book and the Nova special narrated by Path Between the Seas author David McCullough: NOVA: A Man, a Plan, a Canal - PanamaBottom line: I recommend this as a Panama Canal resource for children, with the caveat that parents should be mindful of bias if this is the only resource they will be using.

We used this book for our second grade son's home schooling project on the Panama Canal while we transited the canal in our sailboat. We were happy with the information in the book and the presentation style, which helped him make sense of what he was seeing. What a beautiful book for older children & adults that have little knowledge of the subject to share with each other. I will definitely be looking for the other books in this series.

Written for a 6th -8th grade audience, I really enjoyed it as a not too detailed story of how the canal came to be. I added in my own photos, and my grandkids have a great journal of my story and the canal's story.

I had greater expectations. Having just came from there, It will be okay if the grandkids do a report on it.

I know 2 people from Panama and this book illustrates magnificently their stories about one of the taken for granted for Wonders of the World. This book is a reminder when the World was disconnected via trade routes.

We bought this as a give for my teenage daughter and I am giving it 5 stars based on her reaction. She had read a couple of these graphic novels from the library but could not get more and wanted to read them. She opened this at our family Christmas party and next time we saw her, she was sitting in a corner reading it!

I love these characters and the craziness they seem to attract. Art is amazing of course. A whole lot of Girl Power without slowing down the story. Highly recommend for anyone!

The illustrations, story line and characters are so cool. We could read this again and again. We love LumberJanes!

Wonderfully written and illustrated. Fantastic stories of adventure, imagination, friendship/teamwork to inspire and empower any girl (and boy!).

I want more! This series is an amazing read for all ages!

The change from the original art style in the first story arc of the book was a little jarring. I think more so since I just read 400 pages of the same exact art style and became more easily accustomed to it, instead of going chapter by chapter month by month [which is a long enough time that a change like that won't feel weird as much as it did this way]. I do really like the small mysteries being solved as we all try to unravel what this summer camp is all about; I have my theories and I'm eager to science them out.The way these kids are handling hardships and problems and just growing closer to each other is beautiful and I can't imagine a world where this story stops.

Lumberjanes is everything that I want in a book and the more I read them the happier I become. I have been saving reading Lumberjanes until I could enjoy it perfectly, but I actually decided to read it one day when I was so stressed I could not do anything. So I sat down and read this and felt a lot better. This book again follows Mal, Molly, Jo, April, and Ripley as they go on more magical adventures and learn just how little they actually know about what’s in the woods.

These comics never disappoint and I'm left feeling so inspired and excited after reading them. This special edition has so much wonderful art to look through at the end, including all the cover variations.
