But after reading this book we're much reassured that our little one is actually pretty normal for six. And knowing that makes it easier to take. And this wonderful book provides some exceptional tips for loving with six year olds and not losing your mind.

The Gesell Institute books are hands-down THE BEST books for parenting insights and advice that I have EVER read - and I have read a lot, running, as I do, a website on intuitive parenting. I've also done a lot of parenting, across nearly 40 years (my kids are 20 years apart), so I've parented during all the fads.The Gesell Institute books give sound, researched based insight into your child at each stage, and more than anything, what they give you is that sense of "Oh! This is normal! I *didn't* break my child or screw them up permanently!" And hey, we all need that. ;-)Seriously, these are some of the best books out there. If you are reading this review it's because you or someone in your life is either struggling with or wanting more information about parenting. GET THIS BOOK, I promise you it will make a difference.

This book shed light on a lot of behaviors i was seeing in my 5.5 year old. I was nearing despair over her ambivalence, highly emotional responses to seemingly mundane events and her sudden antagonism with her best friend. Thanks to this book by Dr. Ames, it became clear we're just a bit ahead of the developmental curve and skipped right over the sunny and cooperative fives and into the stormy sixes! The developmental info was excellent and reassuring but the best takeaway was the 'three chances' to do something. Seriously. Makes a huge difference.

in my opinion, this book is very informative. It does not necessarily have the answers as to how to correct their behavior per say, but it gives you the understanding of the six year old mind, and why they think how they do.It is up to the parent to take this information and analyze your own environment.This book gave me the ability to have a little more patience during a defiant episode, and figure out different ways to remedy situations.My son has his moments, but there is no more locking himself in rooms.Parenting definitely has its trying moments, but this age is a critical step stone for their future.

Some criticize these books for being out of date, but I feel the opposite--they remind me of what used to be expected of children (for decades, if not centuries) before we got crazed about testing them in kindergarten, overscheduling them and pushing them to excel at such a young age. These books help me understand my child and keep my expectations reasonable, but also give strategies for dealing with the idiosynchrasies of each age. I think they have helped our relationship thrive.My child is top of his class and a favorite of teachers, no discipline problems at all, and I think that these books have helped a lot.

As many, many, many other reviewers have stated, the language and assumptions in the book are extremely old-fashioned. I knew that going in, so my expectations were not high. I skimmed through the "old-fashioned" parts and had the whole book read in about four hours.There are some really good pieces of advice, however, and putting these "tricks" to work has helped me immensely to get my daughter moving past the defiance, and on toward the loving. Truly. Our crossed arms, defiant moments are a thing of the past.TIP #1. DONT GIVE DIRECT ORDERS. Example: "Put your shoes on now" may result in defiance. For better results: "Which shoes do you want to wear? Okay! How fast can you put them on?"We do a lot of racing now, lol. With everything. How fast can you shower / get dressed / eat / get in the car. It works every time. I just have to remember to be enthusiastic with how fast it was accomplished. "WOW! I've never seen anyone get so clean so fast!"TIP #2. DONT GIVE DIRECT ORDERS. Seriously. Just don't. It's a really hard habit to break. "Go put your pajamas on" is a natural thing to say. Then to get irritated that it wasn't done when you wanted it done, also natural. I didn't realize how often we told our kids what to do like that. In my mind we were "asking" that these things get done. But in reality, it was something that HAD to be done OR ELSE. Man - I'd be defiant too, haha. This racing that we do now has really changed so many of our interactions. No more crossed arms and refusing to do what I ask. Because I don't ask anymore. The opportunity for defiance is gone.There's a few more tips in the book provides that I used and found invaluable. Overall, the parts that helped me were about 10 pages in the whole book, but those 10 pages have been an enormous help. Would recommend and would buy again. I took one star away for 90% of the book being something to skim over.

This series of books were my sanity saving go to when I was raising my two beautiful daughters in the 70's. I have recommended them to my daughter as she raises her 3 and 6 year old boys. She has found them equally informative and sanity preserving. Just when you think you can't take another minute of your child's behavior or you will lose your mind, an evening reading the appropriate age related volume will help put things in perspective. It is very reassuring to know your child is normal and you are not crazy. I particularly appreciated their advocacy for both child and parent with little to no judgement or criticism but rather support and respect for both. Seeing things from a child's point of view was sometimes heartbreaking but made finding solutions so much easier.

Be aware that "Nourishing Destiny" is not any kind of "how-to" manual for the practice of TCM. It is a book about ideas at the foundation of TCM, their origins in chinese mythology and philosophy, and their application in healing practice. This is a book of theory, not a manual.This book doesn't in any way pretend to be a light or escapist read, and that's good, because it's not. It's dense, richly packed with information and analysis you won't find in such a thorough package anywhere else. Or so I've been told by others who've done more reading on the topic of TCM than I have as yet.If you want an entertaining, chatty discussion of TCM, this probably isn't your ticket to that. However, if you want a thorough grounding in this ancient way of seeing the world and Life, or if you're intending to practice any of the healing modalities that are based upon this tradition, then "Nourishing Destiny" is a supremely solid and intelligent approach to it. I'm still working my way through this book, two months after I received it. Not my usual MO, I can tell you! The reason why is that I find myself nodding off every time I sit down to study it's pages. Not because I find it boring; if it were boring, I'd just stop reading it. No, it's so incredibly dense with esoteric, foreign concepts that I have to go into a kind of half-trance to partially comprehend a lot of it. This isn't a bad thing. My whole construct of reality is receiving a refreshing shift and expansion because of this exercise in peering at life through an "alien" worldview. It does tend to send me into Noddyland, though.

If you are study acupuncture or acupressure - this is a MUST READ!!!! Amazing insight into 5-element theory. EASY to read - engaging - not a dry textbook like so many. Also - buying the book led me to the author's website, which is a gold-mine of active study for students and professionals alike. (I am an Energy Medicine Practitioner and Faculty for a International Certification program, have done a LOT of reading about 5-element theory, and I am thrilled to find this resource!)

The book is a good introduction for my study of Stone Medicine.

I am still in the process of reading this book, but the early pages have been really good at explaining the relation between the Dao De Jing and the relation between health and mental/emotional attitudes.

Easy read and very valuable reference work . One of the few accessible book on Chinese Medecin to my opinion.

this book really is incredible. very eye opening and mind blowing thinking about the universe and our world and ourselves in the Taoist way. now I just need to find a book with detailed acupressure therapies. this book really changed my worldview though. I definitely need to read it again.

This is a wonderful book, very lyrical and a lot of knowledge. It can be difficult to get through the way that knowledge is presented if you are used to your every day textbooks. It holds the line between text and verbal tradition.

This book is genuinely eye-opening. It is an advanced text focusing on five-phase acupuncture models. It discusses various phase types, and also utilizes case studies to clarify his perspective. It is highly psycho-emotionally oriented, and therefore useful to add to the more standard library of acupuncturists. Along with Jeremy Ross' book, I use this book most frequently.

Ellen comes across as very realistic and you can see the challenges she faces in trying to not only survive and support her family, but in trusting any man or even her own judgement ever again. After all, Toby had seemed the most wonderful of men when they first met and started courting, but her life with him had quickly turned into a nightmare. If she had been so wrong about him, what are the chances that Axel, the man who answered her mail-order bride ad, is truly any different? Can she really trust him? Can she once again learn to trust herself? And when his secrets come out (for everyone including Ellen has secrets) will she be saved or hurt even more than she was with Toby?I think this is one of the best mail-order bride books that I have read thus far. I loved the story, the characters, and the twists that pop up in this tale. If you enjoy reading mail-order bride stories, I strongly recommend reading this one.

Florence Linnington has done a great job of bringing to life real people difficult situations in the growing western frontier and the few options available for solutions in that era. Faith in God always a steadfast support as well as strong family ties important to life then as now made life rewarding dispite the problems of the times. Strong plot and character development made this book a must read for all that enjoy clean western romance books.

This is a very good book. I enjoyed it all the way through. It was a little slow to start with, but it didn't take long for it to get good. Ellen acted so dumb sometimes, I wanted to holler at her to wake up, and quite listening to her father. O well, read the book and find out what happens.

The story dragged in places and I skipped over parts where the hero and heroine were over thinking so many things

The story was okay, it just seemed to go on and on....

First time reading Florence Linnington, looking forward to reading more. Great Characters. Will definitely be purchasing the other books in the series.

Loved the characters, the story. I couldn't put the book down. I would recommend this book to anyone. It is a good wholesome story about abuse, fear, trust and then love

When you just have to keep reading. You can'tlay the book down even to go to the restroom. You know that you are going to have to read all her books. Read it all in one sitting. This book is a rereader and will be kept as a friend.

First, it allows modern Lutherans (LCMS and LCWS) to move away from their typically myopic, one-sided christology that sees the incarnation in Anselmian terms wherein Christ is born to "pay the price" to satisfy the wrath of an angry Father who needs to punsih someone to let us off the hook for our sins both original and actual, thus pitting God's love against His justice. While there is some truth to this theory of atonement, it is far too narrow. It hardly is representative of the great tradition of the Church (or the Scriptures).The second benefit of this book is that it sets the groundwork for productive talks between Eastern Orthodox and Lutherans. For the Orthodox, God's economic dealings with humans in Christ extend far beyond the satisfaction model of the West. Following the Scriptures and the Fathers, the Orthodox stress that God became man that man might become God. For the Orthodox, the humanity's end and purpose is theosis, or deification. Union With Christ deals explicitly with this theme in Luther, and so opens up a welcome path for dialogue.Other books of similar interest include: Salvation in Christ: A Lutheran-Orthodox Dialogue by John Meyendorff (Editor), et al; Heaven on Earth: A Lutheran-Orthodox Odyssey by Robert Tobias; Christus Victor by Gustaf Aulen; Common Ground, by Jordan Bajis; and On the Incarnation, by Saint Athanasius.Enjoy!

Interesting reading.Different from traditional Luther Theology.

Luther's quotes are worth the price of the book. His understanding of justification in terms of union with Christ is part of the "depths" I'm talking about.

The book gives a new and deep perspective on Luther and the interpretation of his concepts of salvation and Gods love. Easy to read and understand.

What is most fascinating about this book is the fact that deification or theosis becomes a crucial component of Luther's doctrine of justification. For too long, the idea of theosis has remained obscure and unknown within Western Christianity, while it is an important piece of Eastern Orthodox theology. Furthermore, this idea has it's roots in Patristic teaching and the idea itself is taught not only in the Scriptures, but in early Fathers such as Irenaeus, Origen, Athanasius, Chrysostom, and even Augustine. The Finnish interpretation is fascinating because it argues that Luther had more in common with the Eastern theologian Gregory Palamas, then he did with Aquinas or Calvin.The main thrust of the Finnish view is that Jesus Christ is actually present in faith. This results in not just an extrinsic and forensic justification, the doctrine promulgated by the Reformers, but also results in an intrinsic renewal that actually makes the repentant sinner just. Thus, the Finnish view teaches both extrinsic and intrinsic renewal at justification, and not the common reformation of extrinsic justification alone. This both..and theology is basically the same teaching expounded by the early Fathers and is common in Patristic theology.This understanding of justification corrects the later Lutheran teaching advocating only forensic justification and allows justification to be a gradual process, and not just a one time event. In addition, sanctification and justification become more closely related and not two separate and distinct phenomena that do not relate with each other. The common teaching of the Reformer's makes sanctification a result of justification and therefore one's works are only a product of one's justification, but not related to it. The Finnish view allows for an interrelation between justification and sanctification that makes our works, the ones performed by Christ present in our faith, justifying.This book is important because it opens up new avenues of communication between the Orthodox and the Lutherans and allows for fruitful ecumenical discussion. Also, it will also be beneficial in the ecumenical dialogue between the Lutherans and the Catholic Church since theosis has not been completely ignored by the Church in the West. The only problem I have with this book is that the Reformation doctrine of sola fide is not described in detail, and no one takes the time to explain how the Finnish view can still accomodate this teaching. Overall, this is an excellent work and one I believe most Protestant's should take the time to read.

Is this provocative work primarily a product of investigation of Luther's thought or of endeavor to ecumenical dialogue? Although the authors of this book ardently assert that in Luther the notion of 'participation' and/or 'divinization' is a central leitmotiv, it doesn't necessarily seem like that. The concept of sanctification is mentioned more frequently than that of 'participation' and/or 'divinization' in the works of Luther. And the more, while we can find incessantly remarks about sanctification from his pre-Reformation era to post-Reformation one, the proofs on which the authors rely are not seemingly so consistent a leitmotiv in Luther's thought. Of course, Luther unceasingly stressed upon the importance of the presence of God, but there is some difficulty to equate it automatically with the notion of 'participation' and/or 'divinization.' Luther seems much more interested in emphasizing 'esse-ad' aspect than 'esse-in' aspect to avoid danger of medieval scholastic ontology. His stress upon the presence of God is much more affected by his peculiar eschatological thought than concern about 'being' that has been accentuated throughout this book by the various authours. So, while we may agree there is a similarity between Luther's thought and Eastern Orthodox in 'participation' and/or 'divinization,' there is a considerable difficulty to think that it is his central leitmotiv that governs all other thought in Luther. In spite of such a defect, this is the book one must read if he want to get new insight in Luther scholarship. In my opinion, it is inevitable for any serious Luther reader. While Luther by Oberman is still remained unsurpassed and unrivalled, this work can be regarded as second only to Oberman's work in recent Luther scholarship.

I am endlessly fascinated by the rough-and-tumble politics of America's 19th century and the colorful, sometimes absurd characters who rose to prominence. And, as a Civil War buff, I enjoy reading about the various commanders both great and small. Among the books in my ever-growing collection this is a true delight. Pillow was a wealthy lawyer and planter who knew the right people in high places and finagled commands of great responsibility in both the Mexican and Civil Wars despite lacking military training or, apparently, common sense. Yet he was recklessly brave and his men - some of them - and his public - most of it - adored him. Every page of this highly readable biography is packed with documented facts that boggle the mind, such that a certain level of wryness in the prose style is unavoidable. But this is far more than a "gee whiz" account, as the authors find evidence to dispel some of the worst disasters for which Pillow has been blamed, especially the surrender of Ft. Donelson in 1862. A self-promoter, brown-noser, and back-stabber he may have been, and it came back to haunt him even when he may not have deserved it. You will probably be most amazed to think Gideon Pillow had as good a chance to be President as some who made it, like Zachary Taylor or Franklin Pierce.

Pillow was a key player in the early stages of the war but very few people know his story. This book offers a very good insight to the vain Pillow, the man, politician and General. He is also an example of never giving up. He lost a lot during the war but never really believed he was "wrong." A good book to read.

Good book - used for genealogy purpose

Gideon Pillow is someone most people who study the Civil War or antebellum politics have heard of, but not much is ever said of him. Some might know him as the General who fled Ft. Donelson or the guy who helped get James K. Polk elected and became a general in the Mexican War, but is that all he did? After reading this biography you'll learn he did a lot more. If you're like me you only have negative opinions of Pillow and might not be very interested in learning more about him, but I urge you to reconsider. This biography is very fair handed in its criticism and praise. In the end Pillow was an ultimate failure in warfare, but not in life.

Read this book in college after taking the author"a class. It was incredibly boring. The most uninteresting civil war book I ever read.

The information in this study guide is okay. It would be a great study guide to start with. Unfortunately, I found the Math and Aviation/Naval sections to be extremely lacking. A large portion of the math test is word problems (some of them complicated) and this only goes over the basics. It doesn’t help with thinking through problems, so if math is an issue for you I would suggest additional material. The Aviation/Nautical section also just didn’t have enough information. This section is tough to study for though because you really just need to memorize as many facts as possible.Other than those issues, this book is set up well without all the “fluff” of other study guides. So, yes, it’s a great starting point, but you’re going to need more material in hopes of getting a high score.

Sufficient book. I used only this to study and passed for the Marine Corps with a 6-6-6. The questions about Naval history on the actual exam were much more specific than the information provided in the book, so you may need to read up on that somewhere else.

This product was very helpful for me. Everything from the descriptions, to the examples, to the practice tests was very helpful. The descriptions and diagrams were especially helpful. However, I would personally prefer there to be more examples.
