He estimates that "a year earlier, the Luther Krank family had spent $6,100 on Christmas," and have "precious little to show for it." So he makes an executive decision, telling his wife, friends, and neighbors that "we won't do Christmas." Instead, Luther books a 10-day Caribbean cruise. But things start to turn nasty when horrified neighbors get wind of the Krank's subversive scheme and besiege the couple with questions about their decision. For all its clever curmudgeonly edge and minor charms, no way does this Christmas yarn from Grisham rank with A Christmas Carol, as the publisher claims. Nor does it rank with Grisham's own best work. The premise is terrific, as you'd expect from Grisham. Fed up with the commercial aspects of Christmas, particularly all the money spent, and alone for the holiday for the first time in decades (their daughter has just joined the Peace Corps), grumpy Luther Krank and his sweeter wife, Nora, decide to skip Christmas this year to forgo the gifts, the tree, the decorations, the cards, the parties and to spend the dollars saved on a 10-day Caribbean cruise. But as clever as this setup is, its elaboration is ho-hum. There's a good reason why nearly all classic Christmas tales rely on an element of fantasy, for, literarily at least, Christmas is a time of miracles. Grisham sticks to the mundane, however, and his story lacks magic for that. He does a smartly entertaining job of satirizing the usual Christmas frenzy, as Luther and Nora resist entreaties from various charities as well as increasing pressure from their neighbors (all sharply drawn, recognizable members of the generic all-American burb, the book's setting) to do up their house in the traditional way, including installing the giant Frosty that this year adorns the roof of every home on the block except theirs. And when something happens that prompts the Kranks to jump back into Christmas at the last minute, Grisham does slip in a celebration of the real spirit of Christmas, to the point of perhaps squeezing a tear or two from his most sentimental readers (even if he comes uncomfortably close to It's a Wonderful Life to do so). But it's too little, too late. The misanthropy in this short novel makes a good antidote to the more cloying Christmas tales, and the book is fun to read. I have enjoyed watching the movie Christmas with the Kranks at Christmas time for several years now, so when I heard about this book, I just had to get it! I’m a fan of John Grisham’s legal thrillers, so I was curious to see what a fiction book by him would be like. I enjoyed it! The writing was crisp, and descriptive. He did a great job with the characters. It was a quick, and enjoyable read.

I wanted to read this book after I learned the movie I had been watching at my daughter's house was based on this book and I had not seen the conclusion. This is an interesting book of John's and is filled with humor and heart warming feelings. The book arrived quickly and was well packaged and arrived in good condition. I am happy with the book and the seller.

There are too few truly well-written stories that are genuinely funny.This is it ! I've read some John Grisham books,and this one is quiteout of character for him. However, it is so realistic as it goes throughthe life of a middle-class family whose lives are turned upside downby their decision to skip Christmas. And on Christmas Eve morning,everything takes a 180. Laughed all through it. The movie "Christmaswith the Kranks" did not do justice to it. Read the book !!

Years ago I listened to the book on tape. I loved it as typically for a book there is always way more to the story than when it is made into a movie. I also love the movie. We were traveling and I knew this book would be easy to pick up and put down. I knew I would enjoy reading it this time. I did.

I loved this book and I immediately wanted to see the movie. I laughed out loud all the way through the book, but I also wondered why they couldn't put up the snowman and outside lights since they wanting leaving for their cruise until Christmas Day. I know that was what the book was all about, how their skipping all their usual plans affected everyone else, but it did make me think.

For the legions of fans anxiously awaiting John Grisham's latest thriller, this will probably be pretty unsatisfying. Me, I'm not a big fan of his thrillers, and am glad to see him branching out more and writing the sorts of books I enjoy reading, with The Painted House, and now this. Plus, I'm a sucker for Christmas stories.Like most Christmas stories, this isn't groundbreaking literature. It's as familiar and comfortable as watching a rerun of It's a Wonderful Life or Miracle on 34th Street while a yule log blazes away in a stocking-bedecked fireplace, and in the corner of the room you can see the lights twinkling on the Christmas tree. It's the story of Luther and Nora Krank, who, with their daughter having joined the Peace Corps, decide to avoid their usual Christmas hassles and expenses and take a cruise instead. Of course, this shocks their neighbors, who are completely bound up in annual Christmas traditions. Told in an easy, breezy style, this story feels like the novel-length version of something that would appear in the New Yorker, poking fun at the pointlessness of all the surface trappings of Christmas in a slightly condescending but good-natured way. There are few real surprises in this story, but that isn't the point. We aren't reading this book for the shocks or the plot twists. We're reading it to smile as Luthor finds himself under siege by neighborhood carolers.While this story ultimately does nothing more than reinforce traditional Christmas values, Grisham gets points for not having someone stand up and state the obvious. Indeed, upon first finishing this story, I felt sort of irritated. I had the impression that Grisham had ended up endorsing the sorts of activities he had initially lampooned. However, upon further reflection, I saw how he had subtly underlined a more important message: it isn't important what you do or don't do for Christmas, but the reasons why you do it are important. For sticking to his guns without being too obvious about it, this novel earns four stars as a Christmas story.

Not your usual John Grisham novel. It’s a cute story, but quite silly. I bought it because it was recommended by a friend. However, as I started reading it, I realized it was already familiar because I had seen the movie based on this novel years ago.

Easy recipes inspired by all my favorite movies: Annie Hall, Moonstruck, Roman Holiday, Did you know that Cher was 40 and Nicolas Cage 22 when they kissed in Moonstruck?Gave one as a gift and kept the other one... I might do a theme party soon!

Bought for my son. He enjoys old movies, wine and food.... so I thought he would enjoy this. He is thrilled. It's a fun way to create a special evening. As a member of the TCM Wine Club, he can't wait to plan his first meal experience.

Each chapter covers a different film tells you something about it and gives recipes for food and cocktails either in the film or inspired by it.for example Casablanca has a Morrocan dish that certainly they might have eaten in the city but never drank, and a french 75- a wonderful cocktail that you do hear ordered. over all it's fun. If you love movies or cooking it is a fun little book and you might even want to watch the movies . though I'll confess. it will be a long time before I want to try the avacado based booze they suggest for 'rope'

What a great idea. I love classic movies. And I also love food. I can see planning dinner parties around these menus and havig a lot of fun with friends. So far, I'm enjoying just reading about them and enjoying the idea.

Not what I was looking for at all. Maybe this is for some, but please read description carefully before buying.I am having Buyers Remorse regarding this purchase.

Preface: I bought this book for nursing school, and I saved a good 80 bucks buying it here. A brand-new textbook for $4.00...I think it's marvelous. X)Pros: It was new and still in it's wrapping. It was exactly as advertised. It was very cheap.Cons: Not a single one...too bad I can't blame them for the class itself being useless. :)Service: It was shipped/received on time. It was packaged appropriately. No further service was needed, so I have no idea about customer service, which is exactly how I like it.Overall: I give this product 5 stars for being exactly as advertised, and shipped on-time. I would buy it again if the need arose, and I recommend it to anyone who needs/wants this textbook.Thoughts: I always buy one edition behind whatever the most recent one is. It's the same information, just rearranged, and quite seriously 5-10 times cheaper. The exception is any kind of a work-book, as you will need to have the same problems and page numbers as the instructor.

The book has good information but the index is so useless. You have to read the whole section or chapter to get one information.

This is the best deal, my university book store had this for $54.00 to rent, this book is brand new and it’s for rent for $14.98 you really can’t beat this deal.

This book is required for my second year nursing courses. As far as nursing textbooks go, this one is a pretty easy read. I like how it highlights key terms in each chapter. I also bought the older edition of the book and the current edition and I found them to be identical. I sold the newer edition and kept the older one and it is working out just fine for me.

I would not typically find such a book all that wonderful however, as part of my required reading for my nursing program,I found it quite informative and in some cases eye opening. Many nursing students get hung up on the hands on portion of our work and fail to understand why we do what we do, or the importance of doing it correctly. The legal issues presented in this text help to illuminate the importance of covering ones back-side.

I have nothing against taking your time, as you winnow the deadweight in your life, but be honest with yourself. Set aside books you may genuinely wish to read again but limit their number. Only you know what that number is but keep it to one digit. The rest will find good homes."One digit? Does not compute... Volumes of Rowling, Gladwell, Adams, Lamb, Salvatore, Savage, King, Anthony, and Crichton flash before my eyes, paper friends that stay with me, whose tales have become a part of me, and that I reread every few years. One digit isn't my reality for books, though I know others that can move along in my collection.The book is quick to place allowable limits on items, phrased as more of a rule than a suggestion. One coffee cup and two sets of towels per person. Not enough? Learn to clean more often.Other advice comes fast and furious, in a tone that never quite reconciles between cheering and chiding. We see the world through the lens of memory and everything in our past influences our behavior. While this is not a " how to " manual for solving certain problems step by step with our children, it is a much deeper and longer lasting fix. It helps the reader to self examine and become the kind of parent they want to be instead of the kind of parent that they are programmed to be based on their family history.I think this is a fantastic book for parents that are serious about being the best people they can be for their children. I wish it was written 30+ years ago when I had my first child.If you are fairly intelligent and want to prepare yourself to be the best parent you can be ( any age child ) - do yourself and your kids a favor. Get the book. I wish they taught this stuff in school.

I loved how this book opened. It was about how our childhoods affect how we parent our children. Of course, we all know that, but sometimes we are subconsciously affected in ways we don't realize. Sometimes, we might actively try to correct our parents' wrongs without realizing the negative effects of that reaction. This book makes us more mindful of our actions. It's less of a parenting book (as in how to parent) than a book for understanding ourselves so we can be better parents.At the end of each chapter are exercises and discussion about the science behind it all. My mind numbed a little at times, so you can skip these sections if you want. About midway through the book, I started to feel like the authors droned on a little too long. I get it already; you've made your point. Now how do I put this info to good use? The last quarter of the book, we get some answers, though they are a little vague. There's never really a do it this way or try that. If you want hard core parenting advice, you won't find it here. I found the book useful, though, for making me more self-aware.

I do a lot of work in emotional health and trauma recovery and personally this has been THE biggest game changer of my parenting. It was incredibly easy for me to use my emotional health tools to analyze my child but she was still struggling no matter what I did. I ended up going to therapy JUST to figure out how I could mother such a hard kid and my therapist recommended this book. It is quite difficult for me to read and process but I am hopeful that as I process my own childhood trauma that slowly and steadily I can become a safe place for my daughter. Thank you Dr. Siegel.

This book sheds light on why we act and react in the way that we do when it comes to relationships with our children. It is a nice guide for putting your own life into perspective so that you can bond more deeply with your child. It has been eye opening for me. It is written in a somewhat text book style at a pretty high reading level. It’s very heavy on the neuroscience, which at times can be a tad bit painstaking to decipher and interpret meaning for folks who don’t have any formal scientific background or experience. It also says that it is not a “how to” book but a “how we” book and that is 100% accurate in my assessment. You won’t necessarily learn how to cope with raising your children, you will gain understanding as to why you tend to cope the way that you do cope. This understanding could be very helpful in helping you raise coherent, emotionally secure children. Since starting this book, my capacity for empathy and understanding for both my son and myself has grown immensely. My bottom line on this book is that it is good background knowledge and especially helpful for people who have a sense of unresolved issues from their own childhood. Wouldn’t recommend this as a first book to reach for if you are struggling with parenting issues however. It’s more for people who are looking for deeper resolution to problematic patterns in their parenting journey and for people who enjoy and appreciate neuroscience.

My dil had this book on her wish list and I couldn't refuse. She has been reading it and is really liking how the authors help you parent better based on "Drawing on stunning new findings in neurobiology and attachment research, they explain how interpersonal relationships directly impact the development of the brain, and offer parents a step-by-step approach to forming a deeper understanding of their own life stories, which will help them raise compassionate and resilient children." quote taken from the authors.

This book has been extremely helpful for me. I did not read the whole thing because it got a bit too slow about halfway through, but the first half is worth 5 stars. There are a lot of things that happened in my childhood that I would brush off as irrelevant to my life now, but when I really examine them and come to terms with the good & the bad that is when I know I can grow past them and be the parent that I want to be.I have been a gentle, attachment-oriented parent since having my first baby 6 years ago. But I found that I would sometimes get unbelievably angry at my children, completely out of proportion with the situation, and I couldn't control myself. I would lash out and scare them (though never physically hurt them). I didn't want to be this way, but I didn't know how to stop and to be frank it felt a little good... like I was getting something out when I was yelling at them. Reading this book helped me to understand where those flashes of anger came from. I came by them honestly, just as my parents did. But my parents never bothered to learn how to control themselves. I am now doing MUCH better. When I get angry I clench my fists and yell silently at the sky, then deal with my children in a more subdued way. Sometimes i tell them I am feeling angry, but I no longer scare the pants off them. And I really credit reading this book.

This book contained great explanations for why we fall into particular patterns and I did enjoy having the references to be able to dive in and study more, but I wanted more "how to" than "why" or "what" answers.
