Sometimes it comes in really handy to have a manual that helps you work through all the troubleshooting steps and even in repairs. If you are even a little handy this manual will let you work on your old Saturn and not have to pay for all the mechanic's shop repair bills. Of course that is if you have some time on your hands and you are willing to get your hands dirty. Given the repair guide and enough time it becomes possible to work your way through a lot of the repairs. There will still likely be somethings you would rather let someone else do for you, since there will be a lack of space and proper tools. This book may show how, but I am not going to pull out the transmission and work on it anytime soon.

Love the technical data, but some of the "how-to" procedures aren't exactly accurate. For the most part it's been a good book for the basics, and for a lot of information about the car, but plan to supplement it with Youtube videos from owners and realize that it's general in many ways, and not specific to your make/model. Good buy and must have.

At the time, when I owned a Saturn, this manual was very comprehensive.

I was looking for a manual that could help me keep our aging '94 Saturn running, but this book was very disappointing. I wasn't hoping for a shop manual, but at least wanted something that could show me the power window mechanisms and how to replace them. The information was really general and the photography is incredibly grainy (black and white) and looks like it was copied on a copier running low on toner!

Thank you

I've owned dozens of Chilton's repair manuals and this one is the most comprehensive I've seen to date. Which is kind of weird, as the vehicle I'm using this for is probably the simplest in design I've ever worked on. In comparison, I have the Haynes manual for the same car and it covers more years and is about 100 pages less? Go figure. Anyway, this manual has lots of diagrams, exploded views and tips that are worth while. Its a must have for your garage.

not much information

This book is useless. Don't bother. Save your money. You are better off searching the net for "how to" videos.

Review

"Runner-up for the 2013 PEN/Diamonstein-Spielvogel Award for the Art of the Essay, PEN American Center""In this collection of essays (most of which previously appeared in The New Yorker), Lepore illuminates the various ways in which the story of our nation has been formulated as a narrative. From John Smith's largely fictionalized account of the founding of Jamestown, in 1607, to Barack Obama's 2009 inauguration address, these pieces comprise an examination of the nature of history and an exploration of how the way we tell our story has shaped the story itself." (NewYorker.com's Page-Turner blog)"The Story of America, like A is for American, serves up a delightful smorgasbord of synecdoches and allegories of the evolution of American democracy. . . . [A] deeply satisfying book."---Amanda Foreman, Times Literary Supplement"Anyone who has not yet had the pleasure of reading Jill Lepore might begin with The Story of America: Essays on Origins. Ms. Lepore is a gifted historian and a contributor to the New Yorker, where most of these essays appeared. Her subjects range from John Smith and the founding of Jamestown to the murder of a Connecticut family in 2007 by a pair of drug-addled drifters. She drops in on, among others, Andrew Jackson, Noah Webster, Edgar Allen Poe and Charlie Chan (the real one). Her voice is always fresh, her prose engaging and her insights original."---Fergus M. Bordewich, Wall Street Journal"Ranging from colonial times to the present, the essays are liberally sprinkled with fascinating facts--etymologies of 'ballot' and 'booze,' or that Davy Crockett was the first presidential candidate to write a campaign autobiography. Even the footnotes contain buried treasures; history buffs and general readers alike will savor this collection." (Publishers Weekly)"She trains the literary equivalent of wide-angle and zoom lenses on seminal American documents, examining their subjects and their creators. . . . [E]legant."---Julia M. Klein, Los Angeles Times Book Review"Lepore, who teaches history at Harvard and writes for The New Yorker, brings to the task a keen eye for the often-competing claims of history, politics, and literature. . . . [T]errifically readable, intellectually engaging, and thoroughly entertaining. . . . Lepore's subjects mostly range from the 17th to the 19th centuries, but the essays feel remarkably relevant, grappling with ideas about race, equality, voting rights, taxes, poverty, the role of America in the world."---Kate Tuttle, Boston Globe"In this collection of her essays from the magazine, she paints portraits of George Washington, Thomas Paine, Longfellow, and many forgotten figures in America's founding, rescuing them from dogmatic myth to show that they are as human and as able to surprise as your best friend is able to inspire and infuriate you. . . . Lepore knocks you out of your comfort zone. You thought you knew America?" (The Daily Beast)"Tackling a wide variety of subjects--e.g., the Founding Fathers, Charles Dickens, Clarence Darrow, Charlie Chan, voting regulations, the decline of inaugural speeches--the author proves to be a funny, slightly punky literary critic, reading between the lines of American history. . . . As smart, lively, and assured as modern debunker gets." (Kirkus Reviews)"If the definition of a good book is one that makes a reader think, then Lepore has written a good book. If the definition of a very good book is one that makes a reader question prevailing thought, then Lepore has written a very good book indeed. . . . The stories behind stories are more revelatory than the so-called facts they are ostensibly built upon. And while to have read the U.S. Constitution is one thing, to understand what it says is an altogether different matter, since its meaning seems to shift with the times and the reader's intent. This book ought to be intentional reading for every American history wonk." (Booklist)

From the Back Cover

"As both a Jeremiah and a troubadour, Jill Lepore has one of the most distinctive voices in American literary life. So skilled in the art of the essay, she has a sense of narrative that is breathtaking. She tells resounding, surprising stories about real people forging American roots and development, but always through a deeply documented history. Both subtly and explosively, Lepore brings the power of history right into your lap and makes you shudder at just how deeply tangled past and present really are."--David W. Blight, author of American Oracle: The Civil War in the Civil Rights Era"Jill Lepore is one of America's most interesting scholars--a distinguished historian and a brilliant essayist. This prolific collection of articles and essays is a remarkable body of work that moves from early America to our present, contentious age."--Alan Brinkley, author of The Publisher: Henry Luce and His American Century"Jill Lepore is one of our finest historians of the battle over the story called 'America,' which, as she says, is constantly being fought over and over. In this stunning collection of essays, Lepore makes the case that the rise of democracy is bound up with the history of its reading and writing. That history is conflicted, ragged, and contradictory but, in Lepore's capable hands, as gripping and compelling as a novel."--Cathy N. Davidson, Duke University"Concise, clear, vivid, witty, insightful, and rich in turns of phrase. More than any other historian I know, Lepore cares about good writing and has a talent for making sophisticated ideas accessible to a broad readership."--Alan Taylor, author of The Civil War of 1812: American Citizens, British Subjects, Irish Rebels, and Indian Allies"Jill Lepore's storytelling power is on full display here. As much literary exercises as historical inquiries, these essays are compact, highly readable, and often written from an unexpected angle. Combining a lightness of touch with the authority of a historian who knows her field inside out, Lepore moves effortlessly through the length of American history."--Wai Chee Dimock, Yale University

Educational as well as entertaining, Jill Lepore's collection of essays covers topics from Captain John Smith to Charlie Chan and beyond with stories that attempt to get at the truth of these historical characters. In her efforts to separate the man from the myth, she often has to delve into the questions of how history is written and how accurate it is and can we ever really know the man, e.g., George Washington who is still an enigma. In these pages you will learn how Ben Franklin has been misunderstood all this time, how mystery still surrounds the life and death of Tom Paine, how Noah Webster slaved for decades over a dictionary that nobody wanted, how Longfellow's "Midnight Ride of Paul Revere" had a connection to the slavery issue, and much, much more. This book is a wonderful antidote to that cloying, tasteless, patriotic, flag-waving pap they call American history most of us were fed in K-12.

This is a really great book, and I read a lot that Jill Lepore writes. This is a second copy I bought in order to give it as a gift to a family member. I expect it will be very much enjoyed. In these days of transition to Trump, I expect she is taking copious notes and I expect something of contemporaneous history to join her numerous writings, since we are certainly in the midst of "The Story of America".

This is a marvelous, scholarly and completely accessible tour of American history, perceived via assorted documents, ideas and personalities. Topics, to name a few, include debtors prisons, Noah Webster, Inaugural speeches, biographies of George Washington and Charles Dickens' 1843 visit to America, The chapters are written with charm, authority and brio. The extensive endnotes are an added bonus, and every page of the book is fun to read.

I purchased this as a Christmas gift for my high school granddaughter. She's a history buff. She has already read most of this book in the few days since she received it, and she tells me that she loves it. What caught my attention when selecting this book was the fact that it's a series of essays. So if you are the type of reader who doesn't want to get bogged down in a history book with long chapters and tons of footnotes, this may be a book for you.

This is a well-written, very well documented series of essays on a wide variety of topics. Lepore makes history interesting, and she is often scintillating. At times, however, she can overwhelm her reader with detail, some of which may not be of interest. The most admirable and enjoyable aspect of her book is her storytelling. She focuses on telling interesting stories about figures as different as Andrew Jackson, Edgar Allen Poe, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Theodore Roosevelt and she largely succeeds.

What a delight to read! The book is worth every penny I paid. In fact, after buying the Kindle edition, I purchased a second, hard copy as a gift for a friend. I am an admirer of Lepore's scholarship and writing anyway--found her book on King Philip's War enormously useful as a teacher and scholar. These essays are less academic. They're quicker and lighter but have just enough historical heft to leave a thinking reader with something to muse on.

Lepore's book was delightful, and after reading it in my Kindle I bought a hard copy to give my teen-age granddaughter because it is not like the boring surveys of American history one gets in high school. It is a set of interesting stories that might get her into the larger subject. Some pieces are a bit wandering, but they usually made me want to read more on that period or incident.

A joy to read. Politics and history, she tells us, work the same side of the street. “Using the past to make an argument about the future is a feature of political rhetoric....” Moreover history is a story, or many stories, the narrative knitting of past to present to future. History can be known many ways -- America did this or Virginia did that; 53% of Americans voted for X. Equally, and more interestingly, we can know history by looking at cases -- as Lepore does. What fun to read about Benjamin Franklin in his many authorial aliases talking to himself, or learning the origins of Charlie Chan (yes, she has a chapter on the real Hawaiian detective who inspired the character).Adding to the treat, she writes beautiful long sentences, even though her editor might have taken her to task for a few of them. Her proof reader, similarly, might have stepped up in a few places (Monroe’s inaugural of 1807?) but, dear reader, take these little lapses as a treasure hunt.

This is one of the best written and well thought out guides that I have seen and read on the subject of organization. The author begins by exploring some of the reasons for clutter and how consumerism has taken over the lives of most of us. She is not preachy and does not blame, but at the same time does not accept the usual excuses. Bottom line is that one must have the will to organize and declutter or it is futile to begin. Then the reader is taken room by room and offered the strategies for coping with clutter. Shuck offers more than one method and does not demand unreasonable amounts of time. Every living area is included inside and outside the home. Garages and basement are often the worst offenders. Financial budgeting, organizing digital photos, and time management techniques are bonus features. Shuck adds links to professional organizations, donation centers, and hauling services. So now there is no excuse to get started today! I highly recommend this book

Christine Shuck is a welcome guide on the journey to getting organized. She takes a low key conversational tone throughout this book with lots of great lists, pictures and great questions to ask yourself as you get organized once and for all. She also uses lots of stories and short scenarios illustrating how her ideas could be put into practice so easily and quickly.I love the fact that she doesn’t jump right into hints and tricks to get you organized – they are in here but she makes you first think about WHY you may have the clutter you do, which is so good to look at because if you don’t know why you do something you’ll for sure fall back into the pattern that caused your issues in the first place, lol.I also like how she doesn’t assume that one way works for everyone, there are always options that you can choose between to see what works for you and your situation. She also addresses what to do once you’ve gone through all your stuff to focus on how to maintain the gains you’ve made in your house and digitally too (!) - which is very useful in this day and age of information overwhelm….You might think that she also touches on things that have nothing to do with getting and staying organized but I think you’ll find, like I did, that it truly does fit in and could in fact be key to your strategy of staying clutter free.Overall, I really enjoyed this book, it’s got lots of practical and useful information in here that I could apply right away, easily.I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy of this book.

The first time I read this book -- I read it in one day. It is well written and easy to read. Practical advice with easy to follow instructions and broken down into steps so you don't get overwhelmed. I recommend reading this book cover to cover the first time through. Then go back to the chapter needed (depending on the room you are organizing). Christine has empathy for those of us with cluttered lives and even provides background on how we got cluttered in our lives. She doesn't scold or make you feel defensive -- she provides you the roadmap to get organized. After getting organized, she has a section on staying organized with practical steps provided. She even provides a section on keeping your finances and schedule organized, too.

This had a lot of good information about organizing and ways to make organizing your house, your finances, and other parts of your life work for you. The author has her own organizing business and teaches classes on how to organize and gave lots of real life examples (while still maintaining her clients privacy). There are lots of tips that I can implement in my own life. I liked that she broke it down by room and gave examples on how to make it work for your family because no family has the same organizing needs. However, there were also some points in the book where she repeated the same information over again, which was to emphasize it’s importance, but it also came across as suggesting that the reader didn’t realize it’s importance after the first time or two it was mentioned. Some of the later sections of the book also came across as a bit judgemental. I also feel that the excerpt for one of her other books was inappropriate to add at the end of this book. I understand the benefits to the author of including an excerpt of her other work. However, the two topics are in no way related. The situation she describes in her excerpt does also make me question her ability to make good decisions.I would still recommend the organization aspects, especially pertaining to organizing your house, of this book to anyone who needs a little help on how to start.I received an eARC from Hidden Gems. All opinions are my own.

For years I have wanted to get my house organized. I received this book for review and thought now might be the time to finally do it. This is one of the best books I have read on organization. Christine Shuck explains why we have the clutter and how it affects our whole life, not just the room it is in. She firmly explained that if you don’t commit to organize and declutter it won’t work.I like that it is broken down by room so you don't get overwhelmed. That’s easier to do rather than if you attempt to do it all at once. Even taking small steps, you feel like you’ve accomplished something and it encourages you to take another step and another. It all adds up. There are links to organizations that can help with the removal of items or where to take donated items. I read it all the way through (a quick read), then chose a room to start on. I went back through the corresponding room chapter and started my journey to finally get organized. I’m not done yet, but I am determined to follow through.

I have loved this series, as I have loved all the other series I have read by Janette Oke. Her characters are so real, and although these books were mostly written quite some time ago, they are as relevant today as in the time they were written. We still face the same questions about our lives, about God's will and our own, and this is what the main character, Christine, is grappling with. After making a wrong choice in a relationship, she feels unsure of her own decisions, but ultimately she has to listen to God to find what she wants. I love how these books draw you in, make you care about each character, make you think long after you've finished them. I love that they have good, Christian values and I don't feel awkward with any parts of them. I cannot recommend this book, and this series highly enough.

I didn't enjoy as much as the first 5. It took almost the whole book before Christine thought that she could love somebody else other then Boyd from book 5. She really didn't give Maurice Laray a chance to show his love for her. She kind of left him out in the cold. Also with Henry it was never brought out where in the south he was stationed. I wish Janette Oke had written another before book 5 and 6 about Henry and Christine's growing up years with Wynn and Elizabeth. It was never told how Christine came to be living with Wynn and Elizabeth just that she came to them at 4 years old. There seemed to be to much of a gap between books 4 and 5. I still like Janette Oke books . But this one left you hanging in mid air as far as Eric and Christine relationship ends up going. I was hoping to see a marriage at the end. It was nice to finish a series finally.

I think this is an excellent book. I love the development of Christine's character and how she grows in faith after the bad ending with Boyd, who is not a Christian. Their broken engagement stills haunts Christine and makes it hard for her to love again. She learns, because of a change of location, how to trust a man again and believe he will not break her heart. This book revolves again around the characters of Wynn, Elizabeth, Henry, Christine and their extended family in Canada. Christine in given another chance at love. This is stretched out to the end of the book. It is only at the end when Christine gives in to love again. She learns a hard life lesson and all who read this learn that lesson as well. I hated for this book to end because it ended the story of the Delaney family. After 6 books in developing this story of the Delaneys, I found it hard to read this knowing it was the last. When you read a series like this, it is so easy to develop an attachment to the characters. I found with each book that I could hardly wait to read the next one and when I was finished with them all I was sad to see the story end. This is a great book and one I will probably read again some day.

It is a cute book. I remember reading this series when I was about twelve and I wanted to see how they held up.The answer is, they don't. The characters are okay and Oak really tries to add some depth but its predictable. I'm not into christian lit so the constant 'let god take care of it'' and the woman being subservient to their husbands theme tires me out. The character's treat each other fine but they are very one dimensional. They will fall in love, get married, and trust in god.

I've watched the Hallmark TV series "When Calls the Heart" and I have enjoyed it but the show does not hold a candle to the books. Obviously, from the title, I realized this series of books was going to deal affairs of the heart, but it was far more than a series pertaining to romance. It had much deeper meaning. I enjoyed visiting with the characters as their relationships with the Lord Our God, Our Heavenly Father unfolded.

I found the ending rushed and unsatisfying. Actually the whole book was rather up in the air like Christine. It really lacked the depth that the other stories had. Christine came off as whiny and spoiled. The book was formulaic and predictable not up to Oke's usual quality.

I’m sad to say this was not what I had hoped for in the last book of this series. I found myself sorely disappointed. It’s as if the story line was just given up on and quickly wrapped up to end the series.

This book was the grand finale of the 6 book series and it was really great! It was inspiring and encouraging. The characters were real and the plot was believable. I loved the ending!

Great book on adventures in the South Seas among the natives---if you like this book you will also want to read:1. Faery Lands of the South Seas (1921) (With Active Table of Contents)2. Twenty years in the Philippines (Illustrated) (1853)3. Captain Quinton: Being a Truthful Record of the Experiences and Escapes of Robert Quinton during his Life Among the Cannibals of the South Seas (1912)4. James Chalmers, missionary and explorer of Rarotonga and New Guinea (1887) (Interactive Table of Contents)5. The History of the Bonin Islands from the Year 1827 to the Year 1876, and of Nathaniel Savory, One of the Original Settlers6. The life and adventures of Alexander Selkirk the real Robinson Crusoe: a narrative founded on facts (1829)7. The Sandalwood Trade and Traders of Polynesia (1862 Pamphlet)8. Philippine Folk Tales [Illustrated]9. Lost Island (1918) (With active table of contents)10. The Mystery of Easter Island: The Story of an Expedition (1919) (Linked Contents)

Jack London, the literary giant who was a precursor to Hemingway's laconic world of Men, wrote books and short stories based on his own short, but incredibly tumultuous life. I started reading London at the age of ten, and have been re-reading his short stories since then every five or so years. The charm never wears off! In this collection of South Seas Stories, The House of Mapuhi, The Heathen, and The Seed of McCoy are definitely the best. Like all London's stories and most of his books, they are about adventure at the time when nature was still rough and cruel, and about men fighting nature and other man (when they were rough and cruel, but perhaps not as much as today). Men are always MEN, and though they win or lose, they always preserve their courage, loyalty, and humanity. It is very strange to read 1911 prose, where the vocabulary is so different from to-day's politically correct non-racist language. And yet, although London's vocabulary would have been racist indeed if written to-day, his attitude is not. Often, as in The House of Mapuhi or in The Heathen, he praises Polynesian natives much more than some of the "inevitable" whites.A must for all ages!

To start with, this is NOT "South Sea Tales." The original collection of Jack London short stories bearing that title is a collection of 8 stories as far as I have been able to determine, and only some of those appear in this collection. Publishers have been misleading readers by putting out a wide variety of editions that contain SOME stories from South Sea Tales, and using the same original title without indicating that it is not the original. To give the present publisher credit, if you check inside to read the table of contents, it contains 10 stories, only four of which are from South Sea Tales, but the book cover can mislead a purchaser who is not careful (Amazon, at least, gives you the option of checking inside).Having said that, it represents some of the lesser writing by Jack London. It is not at the level of his writing about the Yukon. If you are a Jack London fan, you might want to read it. Otherwise save your money. I might have given it three stars if the publisher had used an honest title, but I am irked by publishers who mislead purchasers (another problem has been publishers who change a title on a book, so you think you are buying something new and end up with something you have already read).

Eight good stories by Jack London, about the people and places of the south Pacific in 1908. Also a good long introduction by A. Grove Day which should (like all too many "introductions") only be read *after* reading the stories. Most of the people in these stories are, of course, either victims or perpetrators (or both) of one of those long painful Western exploitations of a less civilized ("less civilized") part of the world. London knows that that's what's going on, and he writes with sympathy for all concerned, and without the more self-conscious bemoaning that would be expected of a XXIst century writer. To the modern reader, then, he can sometimes seem cold-blooded, but seldom disturbingly so.The prose is fine and spare most of the time, and never gets in the way of the tale. The places and the tales are memorable. There is not a great variety of character and setting; the eight stories together could almost be a single novel. His voyage on the Snark (which inspired these stories) clearly left him with a strong and single impression of this place and these people, and he conveys that impression skillfully along to us.Definitely worth reading.

What a huge disappointment. Purchased this book for my kindle, only to find London's rich and evocative prose broken by gibberish words or phrases every few sentences. At best it's confusing and misleading to try to read and decipher the gibberish parts by context. At worst, it's impossible to read and a total waste of $. Thanks, Amazon, for apparently zero quality control and pulling a successful bat-and-switch. I tried to give this item zero stars but apparently nothing is worth less than one. If I had my way, I'd have given it zero stars. I want my money back, but challenging the Amazon bureaucracy is too daunting, even for someone as stubbornly determined as me.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading these stories of the sea and sailors of the south. Each tale gave an excellent insight into the world from which they came. In my paintings of the sea and sailors at anthonydunphyfineart.com you can see them for yourself.

This book takes the reader right along for the ride in the great boats of the South Seas in great adventures!

Very "far flung" stories. Real adventure happening in the South Sea Islands. Some places hard to read and I skimmed.

Skipping Christmas: A Novel, by John Grisham

Amazon.com Review

John Grisham turns a satirical eye on the overblown ritual of the festive holiday season, and the result is Skipping Christmas, a modest but funny novel about the tyranny of December 25. Grisham's story revolves around a typical middle-aged American couple, Luther and Nora Krank. On the first Sunday after Thanksgiving they wave their daughter Blair off to Peru to work for the Peace Corps, and they suddenly realize that "for the first time in her young and sheltered life Blair would spend Christmas away from home." Luther Krank sees his daughter's Christmas absence as an opportunity. He estimates that "a year earlier, the Luther Krank family had spent $6,100 on Christmas," and have "precious little to show for it." So he makes an executive decision, telling his wife, friends, and neighbors that "we won't do Christmas." Instead, Luther books a 10-day Caribbean cruise. But things start to turn nasty when horrified neighbors get wind of the Krank's subversive scheme and besiege the couple with questions about their decision. Grisham builds up a funny but increasingly terrifying picture of how this tight-knit community turns on the Kranks, who find themselves under increasing pressure to conform. As the tension mounts, readers may wonder whether they will manage to board their plane on Christmas day. Skipping Christmas is Grisham-lite, with none of the serious action or drama of his legal thrillers, but a funny poke at the craziness of Christmas. --Jerry Brotton, Amazon.co.uk

From Publishers Weekly

For all its clever curmudgeonly edge and minor charms, no way does this Christmas yarn from Grisham rank with A Christmas Carol, as the publisher claims. Nor does it rank with Grisham's own best work. The premise is terrific, as you'd expect from Grisham. Fed up with the commercial aspects of Christmas, particularly all the money spent, and alone for the holiday for the first time in decades (their daughter has just joined the Peace Corps), grumpy Luther Krank and his sweeter wife, Nora, decide to skip Christmas this year to forgo the gifts, the tree, the decorations, the cards, the parties and to spend the dollars saved on a 10-day Caribbean cruise. But as clever as this setup is, its elaboration is ho-hum. There's a good reason why nearly all classic Christmas tales rely on an element of fantasy, for, literarily at least, Christmas is a time of miracles. Grisham sticks to the mundane, however, and his story lacks magic for that. He does a smartly entertaining job of satirizing the usual Christmas frenzy, as Luther and Nora resist entreaties from various charities as well as increasing pressure from their neighbors (all sharply drawn, recognizable members of the generic all-American burb, the book's setting) to do up their house in the traditional way, including installing the giant Frosty that this year adorns the roof of every home on the block except theirs. And when something happens that prompts the Kranks to jump back into Christmas at the last minute, Grisham does slip in a celebration of the real spirit of Christmas, to the point of perhaps squeezing a tear or two from his most sentimental readers (even if he comes uncomfortably close to It's a Wonderful Life to do so). But it's too little, too late. The misanthropy in this short novel makes a good antidote to the more cloying Christmas tales, and the book is fun to read. To compare it to Dickens, however, is...humbug. 1.5-million first printing. Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

“Why do we eat so much and drink so much in the celebration of the birth of Christ?” —John Grisham, “Skipping Christmas”“The Kranks are skipping Christmas! No party! No Tree! Nothing but money in their pockets so they can blow it on a cruise.” —John Grisham, “Skipping Christmas”Skipping Christmas, by John Grisham, is a delight! It’s a heartfelt comedy about the mayhem and insanity often associated with Christmas traditions. With their only child away in the Peace Corps, then adding up Christmas in dollars and cents, it seemed like a good enough reason for Luther and Nora Krank to skip the whole affair and go on a cruise. After a comedic array of judgements from the community and unplanned mishaps, their neighbors come to their aid and turn a disastrous Christmas Eve into a family homecoming of unconditional love. Skipping Christmas is about family and love, selflessness and forgiveness. It will make you laugh and cry and warm your heart, reminding you of what the season is truly all about.

I have enjoyed watching the movie Christmas with the Kranks at Christmas time for several years now, so when I heard about this book, I just had to get it! I’m a fan of John Grisham’s legal thrillers, so I was curious to see what a fiction book by him would be like. I enjoyed it! The writing was crisp, and descriptive. He did a great job with the characters. It was a quick, and enjoyable read.

I wanted to read this book after I learned the movie I had been watching at my daughter's house was based on this book and I had not seen the conclusion. This is an interesting book of John's and is filled with humor and heart warming feelings. The book arrived quickly and was well packaged and arrived in good condition. I am happy with the book and the seller.

There are too few truly well-written stories that are genuinely funny. This is it ! I've read some John Grisham books, and this one is quiteout of character for him. However, it is so realistic as it goes throughthe life of a middle-class family whose lives are turned upside downby their decision to skip Christmas. And on Christmas Eve morning, everything takes a 180. Laughed all through it. The movie "Christmaswith the Kranks" did not do justice to it. Read the book !!

Years ago I listened to the book on tape. I loved it as typically for a book there is always way more to the story than when it is made into a movie. I also love the movie. We were traveling and I knew this book would be easy to pick up and put down. I knew I would enjoy reading it this time. I did.

I loved this book and I immediately wanted to see the movie. I laughed out loud all the way through the book, but I also wondered why they couldn't put up the snowman and outside lights since they wanting leaving for their cruise until Christmas Day. I know that was what the book was all about, how their skipping all their usual plans affected everyone else, but it did make me think.

For the legions of fans anxiously awaiting John Grisham's latest thriller, this will probably be pretty unsatisfying. Me, I'm not a big fan of his thrillers, and am glad to see him branching out more and writing the sorts of books I enjoy reading, with The Painted House, and now this. Plus, I'm a sucker for Christmas stories.Like most Christmas stories, this isn't groundbreaking literature. It's as familiar and comfortable as watching a rerun of It's a Wonderful Life or Miracle on 34th Street while a yule log blazes away in a stocking-bedecked fireplace, and in the corner of the room you can see the lights twinkling on the Christmas tree. It's the story of Luther and Nora Krank, who, with their daughter having joined the Peace Corps, decide to avoid their usual Christmas hassles and expenses and take a cruise instead. Of course, this shocks their neighbors, who are completely bound up in annual Christmas traditions. Told in an easy, breezy style, this story feels like the novel-length version of something that would appear in the New Yorker, poking fun at the pointlessness of all the surface trappings of Christmas in a slightly condescending but good-natured way. There are few real surprises in this story, but that isn't the point. We aren't reading this book for the shocks or the plot twists. We're reading it to smile as Luthor finds himself under siege by neighborhood carolers. While this story ultimately does nothing more than reinforce traditional Christmas values, Grisham gets points for not having someone stand up and state the obvious. Indeed, upon first finishing this story, I felt sort of irritated. I had the impression that Grisham had ended up endorsing the sorts of activities he had initially lampooned. However, upon further reflection, I saw how he had subtly underlined a more important message: it isn't important what you do or don't do for Christmas, but the reasons why you do it are important. For sticking to his guns without being too obvious about it, this novel earns four stars as a Christmas story.

Not your usual John Grisham novel. It’s a cute story, but quite silly. I bought it because it was recommended by a friend. However, as I started reading it, I realized it was already familiar because I had seen the movie based on this novel years ago.
