Eight chapters of this ten chapter book are dedicated to physics experiments:Force * Buoyancy and Flight * Solids and Liquids * Electricity * Magnetism * Light * Heat * SoundWritten for 10-13 year olds, there are some experiments that require adult help. These are marked by an "!" at the beginning of the experiment. If you see the 'sun' symbol that means the experiment needs to be conducted outside. If you see a 'splat' that lets you know that the experiment could be messy!Many measurements are in metric. Why? Metric measurements are easier to convert and also universally accepted all over the world.This book is written to kids so easy for them to understand. Written more like a recipe book each experiment consists of:Level of Difficulty * Time Suggestion * Materials * Steps * Now Try This! * Hows and WhysWhat don't I like? Not all the experiments have pictures/diagrams/photos accompanying them so whilst well-written I don't believe the book is as appealing as it could be. For example, our nine year old who is admittedly a year younger than the recommended age but LOVES science, took a glance through it and then put it down. He's a visual kid and reads some of his other science books a lot! The author creates science curriculum so kind of surprised at how wordy this book comes over. It could have been SO much better and more appealing to kids.A well done glossary at the end of the book is followed by measurement conversion charts, resources, blank table and graph pages along with the index. There are a GREAT variety of experiments included and I wrestled on whether to award 3 or 4 stars. I ended up going with 4 stars as, apart from the lack of pictures, it is well-written and we will still put it to good use in our home despite the initial reaction.I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher. From cover to cover, this little book is jam packed with kid-friendly science! I enjoyed it from “Magnetic Slime” to “3-D Holograms”.Concepts covered in these activities include potential and kinetic energy, inertia, buoyancy, static electricity, reflection and refraction of light, sound waves and so much more. The author has found creative ways of connecting these concepts to common phenomena we experience every day.The positive and encouraging tone of the writing - “It’s okay to be unsure”, “try again”, and “keep observing” - motivates young scientists to follow through on experiments.The short, simple procedures provide the opportunity to practice following written step-by-step instructions, a vital skill that is often underdeveloped in today’s young learners.Using every day materials makes the science more accessible. It’s amazing what you can do with just tape, scissors, rubber bands, string, marbles, a pencil, ruler and other odds and ends from around the house.I love the “Hows and Whys” section at the end of each experiment, which gives a simple explanation for the observed results. This is where the connections between observations and scientific theories are made.As a science educator for almost 20 years, I especially appreciate the emphasis on the scientific method. Using the metric system, practicing safety, writing hypotheses, repeating trials, recording observations, and designing further experiments - it’s all here!While this book is great for kids who love to “do” science (mostly unsupervised) at home, I can also see a use for this book in the classroom. Upper elementary and middle school teachers looking for more hands-on science for their students without the expense of costly lab equipment will definitely benefit from these projects.

Some of the experiments in this book were really novel and I hadn't seen them anywhere before. I am teaching Chemistry to my eighth grader right now and tutoring another middle school student in Physics and I found things I wanted to do with each of them right away (even though this is called a Physics book there are some Chemistry topics in here, like states of matter).Here's why I feel like it's a book of "extras." I love the idea of "Mini Snack Bag" and we can't wait to do it, but consider her explanation "The plastic is made up of a polymer, or a long chain of molecules that prefer to be in a knotted string." This is adequate for my daughter, who has been studying atoms and molecules with me and is interested in polymers (we are making slime next). But if I just handed this book to a kid without providing any additional scientific background information, not a lot of content would be learned. This is a book which more about exploration than explanation. THAT IS FINE, but just be aware that it can't be a stand alone resource.Another experiment which really struck me was "Disappearing Glass" and we will do this in my very next Physics tutoring session. I never knew that "light travels at the same speed through vegetable oil as it does through Pyrex glass, so no bending of the light occurs and our brain can't tell the difference between the two, making it look like the bowl has disappeared." Cool! It will be the perfect way to conclude our exploration of Light. But, again, we studied Light in depth first to create enough background for the "Aha!" moments to happen.There are some great projects in this book for sure. On the other hand, some of the activities felt like filler like "What causes the sound of falling rain in a rain stick?" or making a solar oven out of a pizza box. She also has lots of supplies that aren't actually easy to find by just wandering around your house (we are currently hunting for a 10 cm x 10 cm piece of screen) or you wouldn't want kids to necessarily mess around with on their own (record player and a record, drill, hot glue gun, electrical tape, digital camera, smartphone, broken strand of holiday lights, matches). However, she really does emphasize the scientific method with "Now try this" and encourages students to create and test their own modifications of the basic plan. She also repeatedly talks about taking notes in a science notebook (and she uses the metric system).All in all, I give this book three stars. Interesting extra to have in the classroom, especially if you're a veteran teacher looking for some new ideas, but not a book I would build a curriculum around or just hand to a kid on its own. As a professional curriculum writer and homeschool consultant I am always interested in finding new resources to read and review, and I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest opinion.

I own every edition of this excellent book. One significant change in this edition that readers should be aware of is the complete abandonment of OpenGL on Apple's platform. From the preface of the book: "Gone is official support for the Apple Mac platform. Almost all of the new content in this edition requires features introduced with OpenGL 4.4 or 4.5, or recent OpenGL extensions -- none of which were supported by OS X at the time of writing. There is no expectation that Apple will further invest in its OpenGL implementation, so we encourage our readers to move away from the platform."To be fair, the current state of OpenGL on the Mac is poor. Mavericks supports OpenGL 4.1, which is now 5 years old (2010). Apple has announced that the future of graphics development on Apple devices will be "Metal", which is an Apple-proprietary low level hardware interface. This is an unfortunate development for those wanting to target multiple platforms, which is a primary motivation for using OpenGL.If you want to develop for the Mac, you should pick up a previous edition of this excellent book, probably 6th or even 5th edition.7th ed: OpenGL 4.56th ed: OpenGL 4.35th ed: OpenGL 3.34th ed: OpenGL 2.13rd ed: OpenGL 2.0 and 1.52nd ed: OpenGL 1.2, 1.1

First, let me say that the reorganization of text and code embodied in the Sixth Edition of the OpenGL Superbible was a good move. Oh, I have a few gripes and grumbles relating to the reorganization (e.g., it seems like Chapter 5 will never end. It could be split, deferring pieces to later and appropriate contexts.) The reorganization of the sample code is a good step forward. There is less dependence on mysterious libraries. And, the essential support code has been reorganized into a more attractive “framework.”Be prepared for a lot of emphasis on shader programming. Face up to it: It’s the nature of the modern beast. If you’re not ready for that, one suggestion is to start with an earlier edition – one that focuses on earlier versions of OpenGL, and then grow to love it.Having gone through many (aborigines are said to have a ternary number system: 1, 2, many) editions of the Superbible, I find it necessary to keep a copy of a corresponding Redbook (OpenGL Programming Guide) edition handy. In that sense, I find the Superbible to be an essential learning aid. But …It was indeed unfortunate to find that the current authors and publisher continued to follow the habits of previous authors and publishers of walking away from what I view as their responsibility to their readership:1. Others have complained about the quality of the black and white illustrations. They were correct: the printing of screenshots is terrible. The majority of the current authors are experienced authors. (a) They should have avoided the problem. (b) The editor should have caught the problem before going to press. (c) The printer should have called attention to the problem before committing to a run.2. There is no consistent way of tying a screenshot or a code listing to a project name in the source code provided as a download on the book’s web site. I made it a point to deduce, by one means or another, the project name from the text or code if the project name was not explicitly mentioned (which was the usual case). The authors could have provided an index in the download’s README file.3. In the Preface, an author states, “We made a bunch of mistakes – we’re certain of it. … If you think you see something that doesn’t quite gel, check the book’s Web site for errata.” I’m writing this review in June 2014, almost a year after publication of the book. There are no errata on the web site. Moreover, there is no mechanism for submitting errata.4. The code I downloaded (dated November 2013) built on Visual Studio 2010 successfully. All but a few projects executed without error. I found the distribution for VS 2010 available on GitHub to be useless: Apparently the last person to build it built it with VS 2013. I considered submitting an issue, but got discouraged when I saw that the last commits were made seven or eight months ago.5. The book’s Appendix C describes two tools, ktxtool and dds2ktx, which it says is available in the source code. Not so.6. I searched for but could not find an OpenGL Superbible forum. The best I could find was the general OpenGL forum. The last blog entry on the book’s web site is dated February 2014. Apparently the authors have better things to do.In scoring a rating for this edition of the OpenGL Superbible, I started with five stars. After all, I consider it and the Redbook to be essential components to learning OpenGL. Then, because of the lousy illustrations and the authors’ neglect, I backed off two stars. A one-star deduction would not have been enough.It occurs to me that all of the problems enumerated above could be resolved on the book’s web site. I would be glad to improve my rating if the authors (or even someone else) would step up to addressing them.

The main issue I have with this book is the dependency to the sb6 library which is the author's wrapper library around OpenGL.If the book were titled the SB6 Library superbible, It would have been ok but after reading the claims at the beginning of the book stating that this book is meant to go over the OpenGL library without jumping back and fourth I couldn't help but wonder why the authors chose to include their own library which defeats that purpose to some extent.Granted the library simplifies things but that's not the purpose of a book. Since the target audience is already familiar with C++, there's no need to wrap the main() function for example, which I find unnecessary. This may be fine for the author but we all have different styles of coding and it's not the author's place to force a framework in order to explain how the OpenGL pipeline works.This is a book about OpenGL and the code should run out of the box with dependencies to OpenGL, GLUT and GLFW being acceptable. If the authors chose to develop a wrapper library, the library should be part of the text as an illustration to how things are put together. Also what would be more acceptable is if the sb6 library's cpp source code was available to view instead of distributing a black box which may confuse the reader.Also when adding shader code, the authors fail to mention the appropriate code updates to the rendering functions which can be a bit inconvenient. Also failure to delete compiled shaders in one of the examples shoud be avoided.The OpenGL pipeline is getting more and more complex and I can see the appeal in simplifying it by making it more accessible but writing a book about a library and forcing a black box framework is unacceptable. This book does explain things well I must admit but for experienced C++ and OpenGL users, I recommend the Red Book for a more thorough read and detailed reference.

Well written and plenty of knowledge. A must for any library for those that have an interest in Druids. Ian is a Vice Arch Druid of ADF and had devoted most of his life to helping others develop a better understanding of Druidry. EXCELLENT BOOK

While I admire the author and the contents of the book I'm quite at a loss with the Old Irish terminology. While there is a pronunciation guide in the book, there is no glossary. I've been trying to find an accurate translation to the so called "Charm of Making", but all to no avail. If purchasing this book, I would recommend a thorough Old Irish dictionary if you plan on using the rituals and charms within this book.

This is the most complete Druid Book I've ever read. The amount of material in this book makes it worth every penny. When ever I read books about Neo-Druidism/Druidry I always feel like they are 'how-to' books for practicing magic(which is fine if you already have a base), where as Sacred Fire, holy well left me feeling as though I read a very thorough book on practicing a Religion.

Few books talk of the Old Celt Stories, and for those interested in Druidry there are so few sources I know of, from essential Myth to Ogham and rite!

A wonderful companion to "Our Own Druidry" A must for any pagan library.

Given that Druidism has many different styles and expressions, the author did a good job trying to provide material that anyone in the druid traditions could use. It certainly takes a "I am a representative of a authority so I am in command" vibe through much of the book, but I get that vibe from a lot of Wiccan and other Occult books as well. However when he shifts gears and gets into what I would call spirit-work, the flavor certainly mellows. No matter which your style though, the book has a bunch of really useful ritual formats, invocations, and a inspired lore reworks that get your thinking.Also, it revolves around Irish culture, not Scottish or Welsh.

What a fun book to read.Sara and Margo are off on another adventure. It seems mystery follows them around. Together with a couple of friends from home, they meet Alex when on vacation and the adventure is off and running. This was to be a fun quiet vacation but changed rapidly when the kids find a box of money hidden in Alex's fort. Horses, a flying drone, and a mini submarine along with other gadgets, sailing and swimming make this adventure fun for any child on summer vacation from school. I highly recommend this book to both girls and boys.

I LOVED this book! Two young and adventurous sisters paired with drones, smartphone apps and friends, get caught up in another adventure. Good, clean fun and an easy read. This book had a few " edge of my seat and hope they get away from the bad guys" moments, that I enjoyed.

It has been extremely helpful for that, but also learning about different diseases/disorders in general. I purchased a "used" version of this book, but when it arrived it was really brand new and still had the online resource code inside which was wonderful. The book arrived quickly.

In this book, my choices of care plans to look at are Anxiety related to: alcohol, angina, benign prostatic hyperplasma, hyperthyroidism, on and on with specific choices.Nursing Care Plans: Nursing Diagnosis and Interventionhas Anxiety. When I go to that section in the book it has the NANDA deffinition, related factors, defining characteristics, Assessments, Interventions ... education .... much better for my purposes.In this book, that I'm reviewing, the chapters are;lots of information about how to write a care plan .. then >> systems with problems as sub-chapters >Cardiovascular Hypertension Heart failure Angina MI Dysrhythmias (More)Respiratory COPD Pneumonia Lung cancer (more)Another book I find more useful is Lippincott's Manual of Psychiatric Nursing Care PlansThe Nurse's Pocket Guide: Diagnoses, Prioritized Interventions and Rationales by the same authors is also very good.Best Regards!September 12, 2011I'm in my second year of a 2 year RN program and I STILL don't like this book - I think I like it even less and have had very little opportunity to use it - don't waste your money!

Seems disorganized and difficult to find diagnosis

Don't buy this book! I had to buy it to school and have never once used it. It is so hard to use and gives you barely any information. I would recommend getting a nursing diagnosis handbook instead.

If you're like me, you're buying this book so you can write care plans more easily and efficiently for nursing school. This book works well. All my care plans have passed thus far (about 20 of them I've done so far). I'd have given this book 5 stars but the appendix makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, so sometimes finding a fitting care plan for your patient can be a little time-consuming---other than that thought, it has interventions+rationales, which imo is the most difficult part of the care plan, so you should be good to go. Good luck : )

Great text! I was not a nursing student but needed to know more about creating care plans and this book goes through many stages and identifies common stages in care plans for many different situations and illnesses. Plus, if I bought this at my college it would have been hundreds of dollars but it was less than $20 on amazon!

I bought this after I was loaned a much older copy. When I looked at the authors of this book I discovered they were the same ones who had written the Nurse's Pocket Guide with Diagnoses, prioritized interventions and rationales that I love. This is the BEST care planning book that I have purchased...and I have purchased several. This one gives you a complete rundown of a condition - pathophysiology, classification, etiology, statistics, glossary of terms, related concerns, labs/diagnostic procedures, patient need categories with symptoms, priorities, goals, diagnoses, actions and interventions AND rationales for each...yes, each! This book will not have every disease/condition, but it has a lot. Wonderful tool when you are beginning to construct care plans. I wish I had it earlier. Highly recommend buying both of them together.

Horejs handled logistics, shipping and installation, eventually working into a sales position at the western art gallery. Horejs worked in the gallery s Scottsdale and Jackson Hole, WY, locations. In 2001, Jason and his wife, Carrie, opened Xanadu Gallery in Scottsdale. In spite of opening on September 11th into a completely changed art world, Horejs built the gallery into a successful venture, showing dozens of artists and selling to collectors from around the world, including major municipal and private collections. In 2008, Horejs developed a series of art marketing workshops designed to help artists better understand the gallery business and better prepare themselves to approach galleries. This series of workshops has helped hundreds of artists get organized to show and sell their work through galleries. "I discovered," says Horejs, "there was very little information out there for the aspiring professional artist regarding the business side of art, especially in terms of the crucial relationship between the artists and the fine art gallery. Even artists who have graduated with master s degrees leave school having never heard a word about how to approach galleries." Horejs observes that artists approaching his gallery are making many of the same mistakes, not because their work isn t gallery-ready, but simply because they don t have a clear idea of how to proceed. Horejs designed his workshops working closely with his parents and other artists who have learned the ropes of working with galleries by trial and error. It is one of a kind book from a Gallery Owner's perspective. I enjoyed reading it and will like to reread it again from time to time especially when I am ready to use galleries to represent me.The reason I am giving three instead of five stars is because the writer/gallery owner Jason Horejs did not present the solution to a problem he stated when it comes to submitting the artwork for the artists. I am an Artist and it seems a bit odd to me that a gallery owner would not even bother to look at my work if I am to submit it to them to seek the gallery representation. Otherwise, this book is well written and easy to read.In this book which will soon be dated IMHO, he still maintains the gallery having the power to accept or reject the artists they deem worthy and more often than not the gallery owners don't even bother to go through the portfolios submitted by the artists who may very well can be a good fit for the gallery. That just sounds wrong as to me it is part of their job to be doing their diligent homework and research in seeking out qualified artists instead of cowering to face to face confrontation. However, I am not a gallery owner so I am not going to make that judgement call.What I am observing is that with the changing trend at this time, it will soon be the artists who will be doing the picking and choosing of the galleries they would like to represent them instead of the other way around. Everyday more and more B&M Galleries are shutting down than opening up. With the booming internet sales, artists are thriving and if they are talented enough and have learnt the proper marketing skills (through research and reading books) they have a pretty far reach (sometimes even global) when it comes to finding proper collectors for their art. It will need more than the ego stroking validation that would lure them to have their work sold in a gallery. Again, this book is written from a gallery owner's perspective not the artist so of course there is a difference of opinion.Lastly, I am also noticing that most galleries are expecting the artists to pick up the shipping cost of the artwork (round trip so to speak) even if you are out of state/town after a few weeks if the artwork does not sell. That is huge and something to be taken notice of. I find this totally unreasonable IMHO because it should be 50-50 akin to the commission the gallery charges. I really feel for those artists who are that desperate to seek a gallery representation -- I am not in their shoes, I really cannot relate. I just hope that artists should stand firm on their ground and refuse to be a door-mat and ask the gallery to pay their share.I am grateful to Jason Horejs to have written this book because the romance of having my work represented in a gallery setting has now cease to exist -- at least for the time being. I can market my work better than any gallery that has represented me to date, and as far as the 'prestige' is concerned -- it is far more exciting to have the patrons visit me face to face and buy directly from me. Yes, at first it is a lot of work, but then in time the relationships develops and that alone does the marketing for the artist. I cannot predict my future as to what the supply/demand situation would be like for my work but for now I am content to do it on my own.BOTTOM-LINE: If you are an artist seeking a gallery to represent you and that is your main goal in life, this is the best book for you. It will tell you exactly how to go about seeking the gallery representation and how to handle yourself in front of the gallery owner. If you are good in doing your own self-promotion and have an outgoing personality, this may not be the book for you. If you are an awesome artist who has full faith in yourself and your ability to succeed, you can find patrons with or without any gallery representation. I have done so and I am doing it each and every year.

This is rather a short read and it's written in a personable style free of a lot of art jargon. I had the impression the book came from an on-demand printing outfit and self-published on the cheap. I could be wrong, but I expected better design and typography from an art gallery. The book was a bit pricey for its length, which also indicates self-publication. No matter. He probably wanted to save money--good for him.Mr. Horejs zeros in on the crux of the matter and tells the fine artist what he needs to know about trying to obtain gallery representation. A lot of it will be seen as common sense to any experienced artist, but there were a few things that struck me as being worth the price of the book. Example, when I wanted to get into a gallery, I printed up cards and a flyer, etc. Waste of money. I'll never burn another CD, either.One thing in the book he mentions is a story about his father who quickly dropped out of art school. Apparently the instructor discouraged students right off the bat by telling them to forget about making a living as a fine artist. If they wanted to make money, they'd have to become teachers. This struck me as sage advice. Too many young artists dream of fame and riches and that notion should be discarded. I should add to the instructor's advice--they might also consider becoming commercial artists as another option. That's what I am. Although I have sold quite a few paintings in my life, there's just no way to make a steady living from it. Well, a few can--a lucky few who have what Jason suggests in his book...confidence, top-shelf talent, a work ethic, salesmanship and a bit of luck. Still, most artists just aren't natural salesman and walking in cold with a fake smile and a memorized script to try to snag representation from a reluctant and busy owner? Well, that's just not going to happen. Most artists would rather walk on hot coals than go in and get rejected by some distant, haughty owner in a suit who probably considers most artists to be mediocre or a dime a dozen. (And he might have a point--there a LOT of artists out there of all stripes and they're all wanting to sell their work).So, it's not the gallery owner's fault that he gets tired of being hit upon by an endless parade of wannabes. The author made it plain that it's a business and he's doing it to make money. There is no shortage of artists and more are banging on the doors for representation every year. Fine artists are like musicians. Music schools graduate thousands of fabulously talented musicians every year and how many will expect to play for a major orchestra? Very few can make a living at it without becoming a teacher. Same way with fine artists. So even though the book does offer hope, as an artist, I am here to dash those hopes a bit...because in my opinion it's extremely unlikely you'll be able to get into a gallery 'cold.' Yeah, he had some examples, but I remain skeptical. I'm here to tell most artists that you'll probably be happier with a modest job while living frugally and doing fine art on the side. Do what YOU want to do rather than trying to guess what gallery owners want. Gallery owners cater to rich people looking for something to match their $40,000 Italian sofa. Try selling your work at local fairs, farmer's markets or online (not easy as he says) or to friends and family and art shows. Seek out restaurants, libraries and such as alternatives to galleries. OH--one more thing. As far as art goes, the author says everything under the sun has already been done. He may have a point, but I reject such blatant cynicism. There are still paths in art that aren't well-trodden. I'm on one right now and I believe my vision is fairly unique. Even if it has already been done it hasn't been done by YOU. So to all you fine artists out there--don't give up on your dream merely because you may not be able to make it into a gallery. It's not the end of the world. Art is more about meaning than money. If you provide the meaning, then money and fame may or may not come....but if you try to force the issue most likely it will never come. To me, walking in cold to a gallery with a forced grin and scripted speech is forcing it. However, if you can summon up the chutzpah to do that--good luck.

Finally! A book written for artists by an art dealer who obviously believes in "the power of partnering" as a generative means to success.Jason Horejs writes clearly and effectively about the actual details of what it takes to secure gallery representation; he also delineates a viable process an artist might follow for self-representation. Horejs is an art dealer, and as such he takes the mystery out of the dealer/artist equation.He plugs his blog a lot --(as he should, because it is ongoingly helpful)-- and that is part of how he makes his own living. Can't really fault a guy for creating then doing his job!Horejs provides step-by-step suggestions and the book was a quick read --maybe because after working in my own art studio for nearly four decades I was starving for an instruction book relevant to the "art world" outside my own making!Honestly, I cannot recommend this book more highly ... I've even bought extra copies and given them to my artist pals.Apparently Jason Horejs has a physical gallery located in the Southwest ... good thing because otherwise I'd think he was some kind of spirit guide.
