About the Author

In January 2003, Arnold Snyder who is one of the great legends of blackjack, was elected one of the seven charter members of the "Blackjack Hall of Fame." Snyder is a high-stakes professional blackjack player who has been writing about casino blackjack for over two decades. His first book, The Blackjack Formula (1980), revolutionized the ways professional card counters attacked the games. I bought this to learn how to play blackjack switch. It's one of those "carnival" games that generally have terrible odds. This game is the exception. Indeed, the house edge on a well played switch game is about the same as a single deck BJ game paying full--not the 6:5 ripoff--amount on a player blackjack, and the dealer standing on all 17's. Wynn pulled it from their casino--that's right, you can't even play the game at Wynn and I can guess why. The book's explanations and instructions are clear, reasonably concise, and truly invaluable. As a die hard BJ basic strategy player for many years, I think BJ switch is a real blast. Try it, you'll like it.

Certainly everything you'd ever want to know about Blackjack - and likely more than a little that you really didn't care about.I found the history to be a bit Long-winded, but I suppose that may interest some people.This book will help you to better understand the game, and in turn, prepare you to be a better player.Some basic card-counti g the uniques are included - which is really too much work for me, but some people will enjoy it.

Very interesting book. A lot more history on the game than I initially thought, but over all I really enjoyed this book. I enjoy reading some of Snyder's articles on the Blackjack Forum so I figured I'd give this book a try. I'm glad I did, I enjoyed this book very much. Looking forward to reading Snyder's "Blackbelt in Blackjack" next.

Great for basics

As a newbie to blackjack I found lots of great tips about Basic Strategy and understanding the cards.A bit less on the history and more on managing money and table play at the casinos would have been good.

This is the book on blackjack, yes the big book covering the subject of blackjack. Traces the history and how the game evolves and develops through the years as casinos, mathematicians, professional gamblers and others came up with new rules, procedures, systems, countermeasures and tactics. An indepth study on the cards, card counting explained and how the professional bj players work in gaining an advantage play.

Not an in depth book about any specific strategy, but a good book if trying to find the right one for you.

You couldn't help but cheer Esmeralda 's independent nature and her devotion to her culture.I have read all 3 books and feel I have come a long way with her. I have learned more about what it is to be Puerto Rican through her. Thank you Ms. Santiago! Go girl, go!

ISBN 0738208205 - I often wondered, as I read this book, whether it was among the most self-serving blather I'd read in ages or one of the best books I'd read in years. Really, what's more self-serving than immortalizing your own existence in a book? And how much better when that book makes a former lover, who treated you poorly, look like a fool - repeatedly? In the end, though, the answer is - one of the best books I've read in years! If the periodic Spanish phrase intimidates the English-reading-only, don't let that stop you - almost every phrase is smoothly translated in the text.Esmeralda Santiago, oldest of eleven children, runs away from home. At age 21, "runs away" sounds strange, but it is what she does. To be with her probably-Armenian-insists-he's-Turkish lover, Ulvi Dogan, she leaves her mother's home and begins to find herself by first leaving behind "Negi", the name she was called at home. Ulvi likes her just the way she is - naive, innocent, rather obedient and not at all a "spoiled American girl" - and calls her Chiquita. He treats her almost like property, looks on her family with disdain and works hard to keep her from growing, changing, and making friends. What Ulvi likes about her, and the way she honestly writes about it, makes the reader actually understand a little why she stays with this man, who is seventeen years older than she and would obviously not be able to have a relationship with a strong-willed, independent woman of his own age with opinions of her own - one who would certainly not let him call her "Chiquita". Without her honesty, the sentence "I was nothing Ulvi had told me many times." on page 23 would leave the reader wondering what could possibly be worth reading for the next 300 pages.Esmeralda's relationship with Ulvi begins to end from the very start, when he returns from a stay in the hospital and locks himself in the bedroom to talk to another woman. It takes years to conclude. From Florida to New York to Texas and back to the east coast, often together, sometimes apart, Ulvi and Esmeralda seem to live two lives - his and theirs. Every break-up or time spent apart gives her more insight into herself and more courage to become Esmeralda, with her own life, until - one step at a time - she eventually finds herself, in every sense of the phrase, at Harvard. It seemed only fitting to me that her graduation should be in Boston in 1976, the 200th anniversary of the independence of America.One small pleasure, for the nosy (like me!) reader: run "Ulvi Dogan" through a search engine. More than half of the hits are for this book, very few relate to "his" movie. A small thing, but I disliked the guy enough to smile when I saw that! I feel as if I should confess that I'm white, and living in a neighborhood that is mostly Hispanic and that a good chunk of the Spanish population here is Puerto Rican. Maybe that's what ultimately made this book such a pleasure - I could identify bits and pieces of culture and tradition from the book in the lives of people I know and care about. Or maybe it's that, despite her constant reference to her culture and the race issues that crop up throughout, Esmeralda's just a woman, and this is a story any woman of any age or race can relate to on some level. Either way, this title's well worth the time and has me looking forward (or, more accurately, backward) to finding her other works.- AnnaLovesBooks

I already have this book. I bought this book, 1 of 3 from Santiago, as a Christmas gift trilogy for my sister to read and pass on to my niece as a right of passage as a Latina.

Amazing book like the rest of Esmeralda's books. I found it a sweet and sour experience which, I'm sure, made her stronger and the successful woman she is today.

Enjoyed following Esmeralda's journey and I am looking forward to what happens next hoping that a continuation will follow!

Absolutely wonderful!! All the details, the emotions, the suspense of what Esmeralda would choose to do with Ulvi, made this one of the best books I have ever read. I can't wait to see if she'll write another memoir about her life after Harvard, how she met her husband and her experiences as a mother.

I loved this story. If a book makes me get choked up, then it is a good one because I don't cry. It was refreshing to have everything happen to a cowboy rancher and not to some man stuck on a business trip. I hate those books that have the character trying to get back home and they tell you EVERY freaking highway name, EVERY exit ramp, etc. This was just so different. The Apocalypse came to James' ranch. To his town. To his friends. The brotherhood with his ranch hands was so strong that when one of them was killed, it hurt me too. Has a good, patriotic theme running through the entire book. The author was able to reach right out to my heart strings.

This is a powerful story about faith, love and courage in a world of chaos. The main character James is a man who loves his life, his family. His faith is unwavering. When mad terrorist take over his country his faith and courage kick in and he fights back to protect his ranch, family and friends. This book is compelling and hard to put down. The love this family has is heartwarming. You will enjoy reading this story.

This is a well written story; the plot is easy to follow, and you can’t help but root for certain characters. Once I began reading this book I was reluctant to put it down, but my son required food! I really enjoy this author’s style of writing and although I received a free ARC copy via booksprout I enjoyed it so much that I purchased my own copy also. I love this genre and I love this author’s books.

This story was hopefully ahead of its time, but close enough to see that it is possible. There is evil in the world and, as in the book, we have to stick together, help one another, and somehow keep a little hope. The characters were likeable, with many catastrophes and turns to keep the reader interested. My favorite moment was when James was dying and predicted the gender of his unborn child.

This is the 2nd book I've read written James Hunt; he has done a great job at writing a good book; I will definitely be reading more of his books.The story line caught my attention at the very beginning and kept me interested throughout the entire book.I received a free copy of this book via booksprout and I’m voluntarily leaving a review.

Tremendous story of courage and tenacity that I was unable to put down. I would like to think that there are still more than a few Americans with skills and values who will fight to the end to protect their families, friends, and communities. I fear that in these uncertain times, we are going to need them more than ever.

This stand alone book shows that America, if we have strong Americans that believe in freedom, the rights given in the Constitution, and in family, will win against any and all terrorists. Jamie Hunt has written a fast pace book that is easy to read and also shows that we must be prepared as a family and a country.

I absolutely loved it. I couldn't put it down. I read it straight thru. I believe this could happen as there is so much evil in the world. I cant wait to buy another book by James Hunt.

Very disappointed in this book. Pictures ( all black and white by the way) do not match recipes. Info is screwed up. Limit fish to twice a week yet the diet is fish 5 days a week for a month!Like others have said, the book says to avoid certain foods but there they are in the recipes!Do not waster your money on this

Rarely do you come across this level vividness and understanding of the world your being drawn into. Your given acute visions of the land, and its surroundings as clear to the reader as if you were there. As are the characters, they become as real as you or I. I could go on and on. But I'll leave that to you... R.A. Salvator truly is a gifted Storyteller. The legend of Drizzt, which consist of 23 volumes,all of which I highly recommend.

I came to these stories by first reading Homeland, so this is the fifth book that I have read of Drizzt. However, it definitely feels like a second book. I don't think that is a bad thing though. I like how there is a lot of character development especially in Cattie brie. That being said, there is not shortage of combat and excitement in this book either.The only thing that bugged me was the lack of talk of Drizzt's infrared vision abilities. This was talked about so heavily in the origin series, but it is not even touched upon in these books. My thought is that Mr. Salvatore came up with the IR vision later when he wrote the origin series to account for their vision in the constant darkness of the underdark.I think it is a great story and I thoroughly enjoyed each part. This is the first series of books that I have really used the Kindle/Audible Whispersync technology on and I really enjoyed being able to read more at home after my commute.

A well-deserved five star rating and if I can give a plus I would. What is amazing when it comes down to this third person omnipresent point of view story is just how well the author makes you feel for the characters, even the antagonist. There are some points in which the author will leave you holding your breath waiting to see what happens, even though I've read the book before I still had moments like this.Without spoiling anything, eat your heart out and Gimli.

High fantasy with cinematic action, and gut wrenching twists. The heroes face their most powerful nemesis without the help of Drizzt.Mithrall Hall is painted as the epitome of ancient dungeons filled with marvelous treasures and even greater threats.

Book 1 of the Legend of Drizzt series, Homeland, was a hard read at first with the long complicate names but once I got past that I really liked it and decided to keep reading. I've now read 25+ books from RA Salvatore and would recommend all Legend of Drizzt, Hunters Blade, Transitions, and Neverwinter books as great fantasy reads. Salvatore has such great character development and interesting new adventures that make you want to keep reading. There is a fair amount of fighting, if you're not into that I'd still recommend these books, just read through those parts fast.

Ah but you're a genius at yet craft Salvatore. Let us pray there is one more survivor at the bottom of the gorge. Tis entirely to soon for me King to have left his rightful halls.

This is not my first time reading the Drizzt series but the adventures of the drow elf and his companions has enraptured me since I was a young man. I have read this series many times over my 2 1/2 decades of life and I never tire of the story itself. It is so masterfully written that I can actually see this book playing out in my head as if on a television screen and I get so caught up in the battles that to this day I still cheer out loud when Artemis is foiled again or one of the gang puts down a ferocious monster... If I had to recommend any series in my life it would be this one as not only is it a great story it is also a very creative way of teaching Honor, Integrity, Strength and the belief that anything is possible if you have the heart to go for it.
