I have been pleasantly surprised by this book as well as some of the YouTube videos by the author.He addresses a lot of obscure or mysterious passages in Scripture with solid Scripture based ideas.Intriguing passages from Psalms 82 and Deuteronomy 32 pop up throughout the book. I found that there is a lot of spiritual material in Scripture hidden in plain sight!As the author wrote on page 68- " Heaven and Earth are separate but connected realms."Among the many topics that I appreciate in the book are:* The Divine Council.* The possible height of the Biblical giants.* Opposing bloodlines in YHWH's plan for a renewed Eden.* An excellent explanation of idols and the connection to evil spirits/demons.* Clarification of the meaning of the Greek word "monogenes".* Potential geographic location of the "Gates of Hell."This is the most informative book on the spirit realm that I have read to date.It's a real thought-provoking book and one I highly recommend!

Michael Heiser's "The Unseen Realm" has been a long time coming. In many ways, Heiser was the one who introduced me to study of the Old Testament in the first place. I remember listening intently to his lectures on the divine council and reading with amazement his articles on the "Angel of Yahweh" or the "Word of Yahweh" in the Old Testament. He showed how to find Christ in the Old Testament, and how to discover how God's war with Satan is not an NT innovation, but is rooted all the way back in the book of Genesis. This book represents Heiser's biblical-theological development in its maturity, and I heartily recommend it. I truly want to give it five stars: because the insights are definitely worth five stars- but Heiser says enough things I find problematic that I'm giving this four.Before evaluating, I'll briefly summarize the thesis of the book. The thesis of "The Unseen World" is that the divine council forms one of, if not the major thread uniting biblical theology. God's council in the Old Testament is a host of created divine beings (like angels) surrounding God. Some of these beings went bad, and they sinned with human women in Genesis 6:1-4. After the fall of humanity at the Tower of Babel, God divided mankind and turned them over to the jurisdiction of these fallen divine beings. Because Deuteronomy 32:8-9 says this explicitly, Heiser calls this the "Deuteronomy 32 worldview." Immediately after Babel, however, God called Abram to bless all the families of the earth and stitch humanity back together. Psalm 82 calls the “gods” to account, and declares that God would judge them, they would “die like men” and He would “inherit all the nations.” From day one, He took Israel as His own portion so that He might one day defeat the fallen divine beings. The victory of God occurs in the Cross of Christ, so that now humanity, joined to Christ, is "seated in Heaven" and becomes "sons of God." We are now members of God's heavenly council.It's a very compelling thesis, and it's well argued. The benefits of the book far outweigh the problems, but I disagree with enough aspects of the book that I'll start with the problems: but feel free to skip to the good bits, because I want to end on a positive note.Problems:1. Heiser's hermeneutic is extremely heavy on the idea of Israel's "adaptation" of Near Eastern ideas, with many of the descriptions of God being described as "polemic." Take the idea of the council of God itself. Heiser sees this as a Near Eastern idea which the biblical authors appropriate and modify. In other words, there is an objective truth which is communicated in the language of the Near Eastern worldview, even if that language does not convey the truth with exactness. Heiser is unclear to what degree this affects the objective truth of certain biblical claims. For example: when Micaiah sees the vision of God's council in 1 Kings 22, is this a true vision of God's throne-room? Or is God "translating" events in Heaven into Near Eastern terms? Or take the idea of the descent of the sons of God to marry the daughters of men in Genesis 6:1-4. Heiser repeatedly states that this is a "polemic" against Babylon. Well, if the story is there for polemical purposes, then did it really happen? Heiser apparently does believe that it happened, but this causes problems with the hermeneutic. If you're going to read the story as a polemic, then you will only find significance where it differs from the "original." If, by contrast, you study it as history, then the Bible provides the pristine account, and later Babylonian accounts are a garbled tradition. You can get more out of the Bible by studying it this way.Just to address these two examples, then. It is abundantly clear that Israel's divine council is a feature shared with the rest of the Near East. If this belief was concentrated in the Near East, then it would lend credence to the idea that this is the "husk" God uses to communicate the real "seed" of divine truth (see Peter J. Leithart's comments on this hermeneutic in "Deep Exegesis"). However, the divine council is actually found outside of the Near East as well. For example, traditional African religions speak of a council of God headed by the Creator in the same way that Near Eastern peoples do. This indicates that the Bible is not borrowing from the worldview of the Near East so much as the Bible reflects the pristine form of a common cultural heritage for all mankind stretching back to Noah. The same is true with the intermarriage of the sons of God with the daughters of men before the Flood. Stories like this are found all over the world. There are Native American tribes which speak of a race of half-human giants overrunning the Earth before a global flood. The Greeks spoke of a race of Titans catastrophically destroyed. And so on. Charles Martin has written a short book addressing this important question.2. Heiser is not well-acquainted with Biblical theology as a discipline. This doesn't mean that Heiser isn't a good biblical theologian, but only that he's not well acquainted with others who study the Bible as theology and not just as academic scholars. He references G.K. Beale's marvelous works on the Temple a few times, but Beale's insights could have been appropriated at a much more profound and structural level. There is no interaction at all with the mind-blowing work of Peter Leithart and James Jordan. I can understand not referencing Jordan (since, despite being a genius, he is very little known- but he needs to be read), but Leithart has written some truly fantastic books on biblical typology and theology that could have strengthened Heiser's thesis. We need to integrate the various disparate threads that these authors identify in the Scripture.3. Heiser isn't a preterist (I am speaking of the view that Revelation 1-19 is fulfilled, that Revelation 20 is now, and that Revelation 21-22 are future), and this damages his reading of Revelation. When Satan is placed in a pit in Revelation 20 for the duration of the millennium, this is the fulfillment of Isaiah 14. When St. John speaks of a "star fallen from Heaven", he is quoting Isaiah 14, a massively important passage, as Heiser recognizes. By putting the fulfillment of this text off to the future, Heiser leaves us confused as to how victorious Christ actually has been. Is Satan still in God's council? A preterist would say he was cast out in Revelation 12:7-9. James Jordan has pointed out that the entire structure of the book is about the elevation of men to God's council. The twenty-four elders in Revelation 4-5 are angels, as we see by the fact that exactly twenty-four angels act throughout the book- only once you subtract "Another Angel" who appears several times with characteristics reminiscent of Old Testament theophanies. Each of them acts once and walks off stage: and in Revelation 20, the beheaded (those who were marked on the head with a Nazirite vow in Revelation 7) are given the authority to judge and replace the angels. Revelation confirms Heiser's thesis wonderfully in such a diversity of ways: but Heiser doesn't recognize it. Readers of this book should consult James Jordan's "The Vindication of Jesus Christ", with his massive 204 lecture series on Revelation for a detailed look. These are available on wordmp3.4. Heiser strangely rejects the view that the Satan in Job 1-2 and Zechariah 3 is equivalent to the Serpent of Genesis 3 (whom he recognizes as NT Satan, on which see below). He cites a number of scholars on this, but their arguments are quite weak. The figure of the Satan in Job 1-2 is moving in the council of God. As Heiser points out, the prophecy of the Serpent's being placed under the Earth is a prophecy of when the Serpent is finally cast out of the council (as in Isaiah 14). We should expect to see him in God's council in the Old Testament. The clincher is that the figure of Satan is linked with Leviathan in Job 41. Leviathan has eyes "as the Dawn", just as the Bright One (see below) in Isaiah 14 is the "Day Star, Son of the Dawn." Zechariah 3 is a divine-council scene, and the Satan is rebuked. Revelation 12 makes allusion to Zechariah 3 and refers to Satan as the "accuser of our brethren." There is little question that the authors of the New Testament linked the figures of Genesis 3, Job 1-2, Isaiah 14, Zechariah 3, and Ezekiel 28. Had Heiser challenged the conventional academic reading of these texts, he could have made his case stronger.Okay. Done with the bad. Notice how the review has four stars? That's because the book is still really, really good.Good:1. Heiser is the first person I have read to actually integrate Genesis 6:1-4 into a cohesive biblical theology. Most proponents of this view note that "sons of God" refers to divine beings in the Old Testament, conclude that it means the same in Genesis 6:1-4, and move on. But wait. Isn't this a weird event? Surely it must have some implications for the rest of Scripture! Heiser argues that it does. The fallen sons of God wish to prevent the birth of the Seed who will crush the head of the Serpent. As such, they attempt to pollute the human family. We discover them again when Israel is on the verge of conquering the land. Indeed, Heiser demonstrates that Joshua was only required to "devote to complete destruction, leaving none alive" areas dominated by these giants. While this does not fully resolve the moral quandaries surrounding this commandment, it most certainly adds additional and important insight. Furthermore, the remnant of the Nephilim come down to Goliath and his brothers, whom David slays. There is a lot of fun stuff one can do with this important theme.2. Heiser, by far, provides the best treatment ever written on the Serpent (Nachash) of Genesis 3. I cannot count how many times I have read a secular scholar (and occasionally, even a traditional Christian scholar) say that there is no evidence that the Serpent of Genesis 3 is Satan. Heiser eviscerates this idea. He points out that "Nachash", when translated according to its adjectival form, means "Bright One." This is a heavenly being who is serpentine in appearance. Indeed, the same is true of the seraph: when translated according to its noun form, it means "Serpent" and when translated adjectivally, it is "Burning One." Yet nobody doubts that the seraphim of Isaiah 6 are heavenly beings! This is why, Heiser points out, the story of Isaiah 14 is indeed about Satan. The "Bright One" is the "Day Star, Son of the Dawn." Isaiah 14 is not so much a narrative about Satan's fall as it is a prophecy written in prophetic perfect, much like Isaiah 53 (which, as David Dorsey points out, it is chiastically linked with). When God tells Satan that he will "eat dust", He is prophesying that Satan will one day be cast out from the Heavenly Council (above the stars) and be placed beneath the Earth: where his only food will be dust. This is why Hell, or eternal death, is prepared for the Devil and his angels.3. Many, many fascinating insights about how this narrative shows up in the rest of Scripture. Heiser notes how the region of Bashan is dominated by Rephaim-giants throughout the Bible. The Tribe of Dan, who inherits Bashan, is called in Genesis 49 a "serpent by the way" and is scrubbed out of Revelation 7. In Bashan is Mt. Hermon, which was the location from which Og, the king of Bashan, ruled. When Jesus predicts that the "gates of Hades" will not prevail against his Kingdom, He is standing right under the nose of Mt. Hermon. The Kingdom is on the offensive against the Gates of Satan's Kingdom, represented by this mountain of giants. Likewise, the bulls which attack the Davidic servant in Psalm 22 are "bulls of Bashan." This is the root of the NT idea that it was Satan and his angels who attacked Jesus. The same is true of the "cows of Bashan" in Amos 4, where allusion is made to Psalm 82, discussed above. And of course, the heart of the book is how the fallen angels are replaced by men. The members of God's council are the "sons of God" and they are seated in Heaven. But now, in the Eternal Son, we are the "sons of God" and we are "seated in Heaven with Christ." This was God's intent from the beginning: to mold and divinize the human family into a council for Himself. Heiser recognizes the connections with the Orthodox doctrine of theosis, which of course tickles me as an Orthodox Christian.Altogether, this is a mind-blowing, amazing, incredible- and infuriating- book. Heiser is a deeply gifted scholar, and he has the capacity to see worlds that nobody knew were there. His work ought to be thoroughly integrated into the biblical-theological paths paved by scholars such as James B. Jordan, Peter Leithart, G.K. Beale, and N.T. Wright.

I finished reading Unseen Realm last night. It was an intriguing book and it was refreshing to read a point of view striving to stay close to the Hebrew and Greek contextual witness as well as the Ancient Near East understanding of “spiritual things” without bias to previous “systematic theologies”.Heiser does a great job connecting the dots in support of his thesis. I especially appreciate his insight as to the WHY of God’s harsh command to annihilate the seven Canaanite nations (cf Deut 20:16-18, Joshua 6:21, 1 Sam 15:2-3, etc). I always wondered why God would command that babies and animals be annihilated (what the heck did they do??), but the answer he proposes makes sense in light of the biblical cosmology he presents.I also appreciate Heiser’s ability to connect the dots regarding the biunity of YHWH and the Malak YHWH (Angel of the Lord) in Tanakh (aka: Old Testament). Being a Jewish believer myself (and one who engages frequently in messianic apologetics), Dr. Heiser has a good command of the textual and contextual understanding.However, the book in many ways leaves me with more questions than answers. If Heiser’s thesis is correct, then it introduces many more mysteries thus far unexplored by the general evangelical mainstream.Below are some of the questions that I found myself asking as I was reading through the book. (I would love it if others would weigh in here):1) Did Satan fall BEFORE he tempted Eve in the garden (as we are accustomed to thinking) or was his fall CONCURRENT with his seduction of Eve (in Gen 3)? Note: We don’t see Satan “cursed” until Gen. 3:14-15.2) Regarding the “sons of God” cohabiting with humans in Gen 6, how do we know these are necessarily those of the “Divine Council Members” of Gen 1:26 as Heiser proposes? Could they not be another group of fallen divine spiritual beings/angels/principalities/powers (apart from the council members) that defected from God?3) Did the “sons of God” (or other group of created spiritual beings) defect BEFORE Gen 1:26 or sometime BETWEEN Gen 1:26 and Gen 6?4) Was there MORE than ONE “fall” of the “sons of god”? It seems there must have been if the Nephilim turn up again after the flood (See Numbers 13:33, etc). This also begs the question: are the “sons of God”/elohim and/or lesser angels CURRENTLY capable of “falling”? In other words, can they STILL be in the process NOW of defecting from YWHW, and is this going to be continuing until Yeshua returns? (i.e. was Jesus speaking prophetically forward or past tense in Luke 10:18,cf Rev. 12:4).5) Regarding Heiser’s view that prophecy is cryptic by DESIGN (so that enemy forces cannot ultimately thwart God’s redemptive plans), were the demonic forces (and Satan) aware during Jesus’ earthly sojourn that he was God incarnate, or did they believe he was YHWH’s co-regent, but as a as a created being (therefore capable of falling)? This, of course, would require that the "elohim" of Gen 1:26 were not necessarily aware of "the second YHWH's" inextricable unity with the Father as being part of the triune deity. (Cf: Mark 1:24, Matt 4:6)6) Had ALL seventy "sons of god" (or "elohim") from YHWH's ruling council in Gen. 1:26 ALREADY fallen when YHWH alloted the 70 nations to them in Deut 32:8, or were they/are they individually, at various times in history (past, present, future) defecting from YHWH? If we take Psalm 82:1-7 as YHWH warning or admonishing His council members to "judge righteously" (vs 3-4) over their alloted nations, then this would seem to imply that some of them at least were/are still capable of "ruling justly", and thus not YET "fallen". This also opens the possibility that those of the seventy not yet "fallen" CAN and possibly WILL remain loyal to YHWH.7) And finally, tied to Psalm 82 (and to #6 above), here is the question I found MOST nagging at me throughout the book. If the "elohim/spiritual imagers/70 heavenly council members" are being addressed in Psalm 82 verse 1 (as oppose to YHWH's "human imagers"/earthly rulers), and we take these "spiritual imagers" to be ruling in an ALREADY FALLEN STATE, how is it that they can STOP doing unjustly and START doing justly??!! Verses 2-4 would then be suggesting that fallen "spiritual imagers" (and by extension other fallen angelic beings) can possibly be REMEDIATED/redeemed (something NOT supported by other Scripture).Though this book opened up more questions than answers for me, and though I really wish questions #6 and #7 above (re Psalm 82) had been explored at the get-go, I am giving it 5 stars because I think it’s high time that evangelicals delve into the Hebrew framework of the times in which the Tanakh and NT were written. We can’t properly understand Scripture without understanding the mindset of the Ancient Near East world to which the Hebrew nation was called to be a light. I look forward to any follow up books that Dr. Heiser may have in the works. ;)PS: As of 2017, I have worked though all the above questions successfully.

It is rare for a single book to force a complete paradigm shift to how you read the entire Bible, but this book does it. I'm an extremely sceptical reader when faced with such over-arching claims, and the whole Nephilim "scheme" is full of crackpots and scam artists. But this is true academic work here. The book delivers everything it promises. After having this new information, you'd better start another read-through of the Bible, because there will be a lot of new things you'll see in it.

This book is practical and well organized and has tons of great maps in it. Jordan was my favorite travel experience out of the 12 countries I've visited.I just got back from a nine day trip in Jordan. My friend and I went to Petra, Wadi Rum, the Dead Sea, Amman, Madaba, Umm Qais, Jerash, and Ajlun. This guidebook is so accurate and thorough - it made the trip a breeze. The section on language was a blessing, including the great section on foods and drinks in Jordan. All the cultural tips were helpful and accurate (girls AND guys - cover your legs and arms like the locals!), and the extensive sections on the history of Jordan and Petra were insightful. Many prices have increased since this was published. For example, entry visa is now JD20 instead of JD10 (about $28). But overall, travel in Jordan is cheaper than travel in America, and much cheaper than travel Europe. There's also info in here for booking a tour with a company, probably a lot easier than connecting the dots yourself like we did.I would add a few tips that I didn't see in the book: be aware that many vendors won't have change for large bills, so always have some 1s and 5s with you. Also, in the book, some of the information about buses was misleading; we got stuck at the dead sea at 4pm on a Saturday with no buses in sight, contrary to the impression we got from the guidebook. However, EVERYONE in Jordan is so helpful, and we were able to hitch a ride back to West Amman with a tour group, and then the tour guide drove in his own car us back to our hotel in downtown Amman. If you're going to be taking buses, check with the staff at your hotel to confirm what the guidebook recommends. Every other bus we took was fine though. In Amman, we took private taxis to the bus stations instead of the white, shared cabs. It was not very expensive, and was less stressful than trying to figure out the stops/routes of the shared cabs. In general, buses run more in the morning than in the afternoon or evening.My friend and I are active hikers from Colorado, and we loved Petra and Wadi Rum most of all. The stars at night in Wadi Rum made the whole trip for me - breathtaking. In both these places, the more you can walk in a day, the more you'll see, so make sure you're in shape before you go, and bring good shoes and thick socks. I'd say ideally you need three days in Petra; we had two FULL days of hiking and didn't see it all. We did the night tour of Petra, which honestly I wouldn't do again (search google images for "petra night" and you'll get the idea). After a full day of hiking, walking all the way back into Petra in the cold night wasn't fun, and when the group arrived at the treasury, everyone's camera flashes really killed the vibe. Petra is filled with vendors who sell trinkets VERY aggressively, so brace yourself for constant offers of donkey and camel rides and cheap jewelry.Traveling in the Middle East takes more preparation than Europe. If you're thinking about going to Jordan, get this guide book and read it months before you go; you'll be glad you did. I'd also recommend getting some free Arabic podcasts off itunes. My favorite was a small series by the Peace Corps for volunteers in Jordan. It had all the important phrases, and with Jordanian dialect and accent. Watch out for Arabic podcasts geared towards Morocco; the language is very different there. I also read the books "Married to a Bedouin" and "Live from Jordan" before I went. Both great books that informed my view of the country and it's people.A tip: from downtown Amman, you can hike up the hill (stairs between houses) to the Citadel and sneak in without paying at the entrance. The views at the top are killer, and it's fun to see the ancient ruins juxtaposed with the bustling city. Also, locals hang out up there in the evening (it's probably the only parkland/open-space in that part of town). We ended up there at sunset and all around us were locals, kids playing soccer, women picnicking, families taking photos. We felt so special to be up there; we were the only tourists around.I cannot say enough how kind people were to us. Everywhere we went people offered us tea. I got a haircut one day in Madaba, and they insisted I not pay and brought us tea and gave us bread and nuts and we hung out - such a memory. One of our favorite drinks was "lemon juice" with mint mixed in. So good! Many menus were in English, and most service industry folks knew enough english to help us out.My personal recommendations, in order: Petra, Wadi Rum, Dead Sea, Jerash. I'd say plan a few days for Petra and a few for Wadi Rum. Plan on half a day for the Dead Sea, most of a day for Jerash (eat at the Lebanese house! So good!). Amman is a hectic city. My friend and I loved it, but many casual travelers hate it. The guidebook suggests basing yourself in Madaba if you want a more mellow time. besides, it's closer to the airport than Amman.The three hotels we stayed at, which I recommend: Burj al Arab in Amman, Cleopetra in Wadi Musa (Petra), Mariam in Madaba. Our guide in Wadi Rum was Mzied Atieg; he was awesome.Another great thing about our trip: we met many wonderful travelers from Europe and America. Being in such a special place, travelers were very open to spending time with us and talking about their travels. We met such wonderful folks, and we compared notes about where we'd stayed, what we'd done, what else we were going to do on our trip.In conclusion, if you're thinking about traveling to Jordan, get this book!I would add; check current news in Jordan before committing to visit. Two protestors died in Amman the day we left. Sobering and scary. However, in our travels we encountered no troubles or tension, and everyone was kind to us, and they continued to be kind to us after we told them we were from America. Most Jordanians don't like American foreign policy, but they like Americans just fine.

I bought this just prior to my trip to Jordan in May 2015. I found it extremely reliable with respect to all the normal tourist areas from the Syrian border to the Red Sea. My son and I covered them all on our own driving a rental car . Next to my GPS this was the most valuable asset I had. When I wanted to know where to park my car at the Allenby Bridge so I could do a one day trip to Jerusalem he told me .When I wanted to explore out of the way tells and see where the Moabite Stela was discovered all I needed to do was " look in the book". My 8 days driving the length of Jordan was made relatively easy thanks to the info provided in this thin volume. Incidentally tourism is down 60% . We were the only americans we saw the entire time we were there and the people were uniformly happy to see us .Go . Go now

I must admit that I am new to using a Kindle and this was my first go at using a travel guide that wasn't a paperback. With more experience at using the Kindle I might change my mind, but it was often a problem going between information and maps. The maps were also difficult to read when I tried enlarging them. However, the information about places was good and we were happy with the restaurants recommended by the guide. I would recommend having a separate, paper map as back-up if you are driving as we were. I would also like to strongly suggest that, if you have the time, follow Matthew's advice and spend a few days at Feynan Ecolodge - even with unexpected rain it was one of the best things we did!

Even though it is about 14 years old, the explicit description of the sites were very helpful since we travelled independently. Not much has changed except prices have doubled. The history and political chapters were very helpful.

If you read the 21 reviews listed for this guide, know that only 9 pertain to this edition. After know that know that this 2012 edition was researched in 2010/11 which was before the Syrian refugee crisis. An event that has serious changed Jordan. Now, as I write this review there are over 500 hundred thousand desperate refugees from Syrian seeking hope and home in this small (and getting smaller country). I work in medicine and one Jordan doctor told me that the government figure of 450,000 Syria Refugees are kept low to not disturb the Jordanians .... he said really there are double those number in Jordan. I tell you that because this book describes what Jordan was like in 2011 but not what it is today. For example, in the book, in the Ajloun sections, it states that "Northern Jordan's verdant hills are cut through by countless lush valleys..." I was just there and it is gone... all gone, sorry.What I am seeing is construction everywhere and very tacky construction at that - the cement block buildings with zero personality...places to hold people... but definitely no more lush valleys.That said, this can be a good guide if you stay on proven tourist routes "Petra, Dead Sea, Jerash, etc" then you will benefit from this Rough Guide. The write is a good write, Matthew Teller, and I do hope he comes out soon with the 6th edition.

While the detail is extensive, Kindle compatibility is lacking (as usual). The maps are illegible on my 1.5 y.o. Kindle; zooming only expands the text not images. I also was unable to get the text search function to work. Freebie pdf viewer software provides a better user experience. Come on Amazon/travel guide companies and get up to speed.

just returned from 2 weeks traveling in Jordan, used the latest edition.A precise guide, made the trip much easier and comfortable.The author made a fantastic job, I just do not understand how a single person was able to provide so much precise details.I rent a car, and can confirm that number of gas stations in Jordan is less than crusaders castles.The only thing, which may be I want to add, that if you are lucky to find one of those gas stations, please be aware, that local folks try to charge you pointing on the number of liters, which is about twice as much, as number in JD.

As if his "page-turning" prose weren't enough to make this book worthwhile, Mark Rashid's ability to convince the reader of the point of view of the horse is simply remarkable. My husband & I have used Rashid's approach on various of our rescue horses & have had great success in teaching them to stand quietly for the farrier and be caught in the pasture and simple ground manners. The book is entertaining, insightful, and rewarding when you put his ideas into practice. After my husband & I read it, we immediately bought his next 3 books. Well worth the money and your reading time!

This book was recommended to me by a fellow horse owner who said it was helpful in solving many different types of horse problems. I got the "rewritten" or edited version and was disappointed. In this version of the book, the author has commented on each chapter and most often says that he no longer recommends or uses whatever solution his younger self mentioned in the chapter but does not offer a different, better solution. I struggle to understand the purpose of the updated version of this book, especially since the author admits that even he doesn't really like it. Mark Rashid comes off as arrogant and very few ideas for solving horse problems are offered.

The first book by Mark Rashid that I read was WHOLE HEART, WHOLE HORSE. I couldn't put it down and ordered 6 more to give out to my Ladies riding group. I have since ordered 5 other books and intend to complete my Rashid library by owning all of them. They are all different and seem to speak to the reader as if Mark has been working with you and your horse personally. These books are the most helpful of all of the horsemanship books I have, and I have a lot! Thank you, Mark. I really need to get to a clinic, if only as an auditor.

Great insight for helping a "damaged" horse. I have a very spunky Paso Fino gelding with behavioral and trust issues. Taditional approaches do not work with him. Mark Rashid's viewpoint into what the horse may be thinking is very helpful. It has helped me to question, "Why isn't this working?"Most people have one specific method of handling the horse and will not waiver even if it's not working. Mark encourages the owner to rethink the method and try another approach. Repeatedly if necessary. It's not failure if the first method doesn't work. That's a refreshing viewpoint.

Mark has a way of turning a very intuitive, whole body/mind/spirit way of communication with horses, into endearing stories-a story to each experience-and frequently an overview of lessons learned, or mistakes made.To understand what he is saying-is therefore not a difficult thing-but to put it into practice is a loving invitation towards thoughtfulness and mindfulness that makes our relationship with horses so much more rewarding. Something within the grasp of every human being and a worthy goal.

I'm a new horse owner who has become addicted to Mark Rashid's books in general. If you want to understand your horse better, and how to better understand and improve your partnership, then here is a great collection for your growing equine library. I enjoy his story format, vs. a clinical explanation, it somehow personalizes what he is teaching us. It now seems that whenever my Rocky Mtn is acting silly, I don't just react, but ask myself what my horse is telling me and why, and reflect on what Mark might have done or would do in this circumstance. Rashid has taught me to use the thinking side of my brain, which is exactly what we expect our horses to do.The only downside is that I'm rapidly running out of his books as each one becomes quickly consumed during the evening hours. And personally, I'm still trying to figure out why there are no photos in his books, but great illustrations and drawings, and you can never find a picture of Mark.

Good read in my opinion! I had read A Good Horse is Never A Bad Color and loved it! I'm working with a spooky mare on trust issues. I've found Mark's perspective very helpful. For the astute reader, Mr. Rashid addresses the horse's most serious and deleterious problem: human attitudes. Using anecdotal evidence in the form of parable, he addresses common problems from the point of origin. Someone looking for a cookbook on horse training will be disappointed. This isn't a cookbook, rather it is a feast for the heart hungry to understand some of horse's most puzzling responses. In many ways this book addresses ways to avoid issues as well as it solves them by giving instruction on how to recognize problems at the outset. I was inspired by these stories especially the final chapter. If you don't get answers from this book, then you aren't asking the right questions. I highly recommend it.

I love Mark Rashid's writing style (RASH-id). Even a non-equestrian can appreciate his stories for their humor and forthrightness.I bought my first Rashid book due to the excellent reviews he received on Amazon and was not disappointed. We were having problems helping a horse adjust to new accommodations and Rashid's perspective of letting the horse communicate with US instead of simply expecting him to understand his environment was refreshing. I even wept a couple of times, especially when he rekindles the tale of "Seeing the Teacher". Very moving.Mark Rashid will not tell you what to do nor how to do it, but gives so much insight into the mind of horses that you can apply what he says on your own and solve most common problems in a patient, humane way. After reading this book, I not only plan to order and read the rest of his publications, but have booked tickets to watch Rashid in action at Equine Affair this spring.

I had quite a time finding books for my daughter to study for the HiSet test. This is a new test and there are few books to help study for it. The few books out there have no reviews to help choose which books to buy. After buying a couple and sending them back, this book series is exactly what I want. The author has broken down the content of the test subject and does not just have questions to answer. For example, The first topic in the book is "The Writing Process." Under that heading are subheadings of "Plan, Draft, Evaluate." Under each of these subtopics, the author teaches how to do it. I wanted a book that taught how the HiSet wanted each subject done since they go on the common core teaching. A person cannot just get a GED book because it is a different way of learning and will not help on the HiSet test. I do not agree with how common core is taught, but if you want to pass the HiSet, the student must learn it. In my state, it is the only equivalency test offered. This series also has books on Math, and reading skills. It is a shame this series does not also cover the science and social studies parts of the HiSet.

This was used for an adult workshop and helped my students with some basic understanding.

I bought this for my son and it helped him with his college course. Made a good grade.

Some of the exercises are overly-repetitive and tedious, but the writing tips are useful.

The heroine is beyond whiny! And the hero and the heroines parents kept being on the point of revealing something when someone walked in. If you use that once or even twice maybe but over and over again it was just obnoxious, especially because what they were about to reveal was obvious for a long time.

Cage of Deceit was entirely predictable with no surprises at all throughout. All the huge secrets were glaring from the beginning (as an avid read, I must admit I am rarely surprised) and I knew exactly what the prince was hiding as soon as we were introduced to him.Parts of the book were very frustrating. Parents who are supposed to be preparing their daughter to rule someday, who feel she is old enough to marry at 16, hide important parts of what they are doing so that she is totally unprepared when its time to make important sacrifices. The princess views herself as always acting like the "perfect princess" but based on the reactions of everyone around her anytime something was going on, it's safe to say that she had a totally unrealistic view of herself that was never examined. Supposed friends who don't really act like friends and the prince and his squire are both boorish (prince) or awful (squire), but propped up to be the ideal.With all that being said, I did enjoy reading the book. It was clean and the writing style was right up my alley. I would have liked for the supposed twists to not have been so easily spotted early on in the story, but I'm happy that the writing itself was descriptive without being overly so and the author told the story well enough.Overall, for younger readers the twists might be less obvious and I would feel quite comfortable with my young teens reading this novel.

Same old same old. As an avid reader of fantasy/adventure novels I found this to be another repeat of a common story line in this genre. Some of the writing is annoying as the terminology is just out of character for the world the author has built. Ho hum characters and an obvious plot don't add anything either.If you are new to the genre you will enjoy this book a lot more than an experienced reader. It is a cliff hanger (of sorts) so if you hate that tactic by authors give this one a miss. It is an obvious cliff hanger and not too illogical a point to stop at so treat it more like an episode and it probably won't worry you too much. The story moves along at a fairly fast pace so you can probably read this one in one sitting.

I seriously loved this book. Jennifer Anne Davis gave us a strong, an actually strong female MC with Allyssa. She was everything I wanted her to be and then some, she didn't take crap from anyone, she could hold her own in a fight and yet could walk in court and demand respect and the love of her people.And then there are the other characters... loved them all. No character really seemed like a side character because Jennifer Anne Davis took time to give each character a life and story.The story was great and had wonderful pacing. The surprise wasn't much of a surprise to me, but that didn't take away my excitement to see if I was right or not. And of course I was! Can't wait to read the next one. This is definitely a must read.

While this had a slow start (it took about 30% of the book to really get me invested), I ended up enjoying it. While the plot is predictable and an experienced reader can see the twists coming a mile away, the characters help push it towards being a good read. Allyssa, the heroine, is your typical 16-year-old "princess who wants to escape the palace confines physically and emotionally" and definitely comes across as whiney and entitled at first. However, her personality develops along with the plot and she is very likeable by the end of the book without being too perfect. The action could be written more smoothly, but the romance feels organic (for a YA novel, anyway) and the minor characters are fleshed out enough to be interesting. It does end on a cliff-hanger, but the first page of the introduction/author's note tells you that explicitly, so it's your own fault if you don't like where it stops. I'm definitely going to continue the series.

Cage of Deceit is a great start to the series. Allysa proves that she is a kick butt kind of Princess. She is loyal, kind and very brave! She just feels like she is in a cage being a Princess. She just wants to continue to sneak out with her best friend Gravick and catch thieves at night. She is nimble and good at it! She loves her parents and knows that she will marry someone for a political move but hopes that she will find the love her own parents had as well.When Prince Odar from Fren comes with his squire Jarvick to present a marriage contract with her so that the two kingdoms with be united to fight against the impending war from Russek, she finds him handsome but somewhat aloof! But the squire, Jarvick is impossible to deal with. They really dislike each other and I didn't think either would see any good in the other but feelings change.By the end of the book, Allysa has told lies and she has been given lies by so many her mind can't keep up with it all. But Allysa doesn't get all the information from everyone before she is off to Fren for Prince Odar's parents to accept her first. And as I am learning, the author loves to leave you hanging in the end. Thank goodness, I have an arc of the second book to quench my thirst for this amazing series!I love all the little hints of things, the inner workings of Allysa's mind. The book is totally in her third person POV. The book is fast paced and filled with action, a little romance, intrigue and politics.I have found another favorite author and can't wait to read more of her work. I have read another book of hers and knew she would be amazing and I'm glad I read this one too!!
