Review

"One of Choice's Outstanding Academic Titles for 2014""This is an excellent contribution to the literature and yet another compelling reason that scholars should not limit themselves to only the federal Constitution and courts." (Choice)"I am hopeful that Zackin's thoughtful and timely book will invigorate the debate, reminding readers along the way of the vibrant role states have played, and should continue to play, in defining new statutory and constitutional rights. Whether 'we want more' rights or not, we would be lucky to have more scholarship from Zackin about the states' essential role in the American constitutional law tradition."---Jeffrey S. Sutton, Harvard Law Review"Emily Zackin argues that the United States has a long history of positive rights protection, created and fostered by political outsiders who wanted to change society and disrupt the status quo. We will find this tradition not in the federal constitution, but in our country's many state constitutions. This is a crucially important book revealing an unjustly neglected feature of America's constitutional traditions."--Jack M. Balkin, Yale Law School"Zackin has written a major challenge to conventional wisdom that American constitutionalism is committed to negative rights only. Her exceptional research and analysis has resulted in a work that will be both a classic of American state constitutionalism and American constitutional development."--Mark Graber, University of Maryland"This is an extremely important book that will be widely discussed. One of the pathologies of the standard approach to American constitutionalism is its exclusive focus on the U.S. Constitution and the concomitant ignorance of the rich materials to be found in the literally dozens of American state constitutions. This book will be an extremely important wake-up call for most readers."--Sanford Levinson, author of Constitutional Faith"This splendid book single-handedly establishes positive rights as core elements of the American constitutional tradition. Using a comparative case study of rights in education, labor, and the environment, Zackin overturns conventional wisdom by documenting a rich legacy of positive rights in state constitutions. Looking for Rights in All the Wrong Places is provocative, important, and persuasively argued."--Charles R. Epp, author of Making Rights Real: Activists, Bureaucrats, and the Creation of the Legalistic State

It was a struggle for Hattie to put herself together after losing her twins. Losing her babies was a partial disintegration of herself. She could not move beyond her grief, even when she had more children.I believe she loved the children born after the twins, but chronic depression affected her in a way that was detrimental to their upbringing. Her husband August’s instability added to her depression.Although August was unreliable as a husband and father, he had no difficulty expressing a little tenderness to his children. Yet August was a soft man who lacked character. He was too easy, too carefree, a spendthrift who enjoyed the bars, women and good times. In essence, August was egocentric.I loved Hattie’s character. I saw her as a strong woman, yet her grief kept her tethered to a man that caused a great deal of her emotional disability. She could not lift herself out of the mire from him.Her brief affair with Lawrence showed her lack of direction. However, Lawrence made her feel good, made her laugh and gave her hope. But Lawrence’s compulsion would have spiraled out of control. Lawrence would have sent Hattie into a tailspin of profound depression. Lawrence could not offer her permanence and stability.Hattie and August’s dysfunction and instability affected the children as adults. Their adult children had their own destructive behaviors and demons to deal with.I enjoyed the book because I could imagine (Hattie’s sister) Pearl’s desperation for a child. I could imagine Hattie’s loss and the effects of depression on her psyche. The writing was poignant, touched my heart, and made my eyes moisten at times. That in itself is a feat for a writer.I would have liked the book to end with Bell, who I found destructive. I will not say more than that. The only error I found was Lawrence’s discussion of Robert Kennedy in Bell’s chapter (1975). Robert Kennedy died June 6, 1968.Errors happen in editing and in historical facts. No one knows this more than I do.I suggest you read the book. It is a great read.

This book about Hattie and her Tribe has great resonance for me. I grew up in Philly, and have family who migrated there from SC in the 1920's for the same reasons that Hattie did. I know about the power of the neighborhoods, and the block, in shaping and nurturing you. Hattie, guarded, defensive, alone, and isolated, was disconnected from her community because of money and her husband's lower class. Though she was of the "right," class and color for Germantown, she'd married "down," and was disconnected from her neighbors. Interestingly her children are so affected that they end up in the very neighborhoods that Germantowners scorned: South, West, and North Philly. Hattie's story is about the way that pain in one generation is passed to the next, and the next, and so on. Her father is brutally, senselessly murdered, and the family escapes to Philadelphia, only to have her mother, then twins die, all before she is even 18. She becomes deeply depressed and her children experience her depression as rejection and are in turn never able to fully accept and know who they really are. Some reviewers have complained that the book wasn't happy or uplifting, and I guess that they missed the point. It's about how your early experiences shape you, and how your children are then also shaped. One measure of a book for me is how much I can relate to the characters, and I not only related to them, I felt I knew them, had lived next door to them, went to church with them. They were the family everyone talked about, and in turn, pitied or scorned. Did they have happy endings? No. But that's the point of the story.

Liked the characters, but didn't really get to know them or know if their situations turned out okay. I like the way this author writes, but this book seemed like it didn't quite fit together, like it wasn't finished or information was missing or something. We meet several of Hattie's kids and they all seem to have some serious issues but I don't get why. Hattie seemed like a good mother. Not very affectionate, but the kids seemed to be taken care of and not abused by their parents in any way. I don't get why her children were all in such a bad way. Something is missing in the story to make that connection. I liked the characters though and wanted very much to get to know them better. And the idea I got from the end of the book was confusing. What is the message there? When you feel confused and maybe defeated or don't know where to turn, don't turn to God? I mean, I presume that Hattie wants to be more hands on with this grandchild so that she doesn't turn out the way her children did, but I didn't understand why she did what she did in the church. Or maybe I do get it, but I'm not sure if that is the message the author wanted to convey.

Many of the critiques in the comments revolve around the jumping around of personalities/narrators, the consistent sadness and lack of joy, and also that often they felt incomplete.Honestly, this is what made the book so compelling for me. It lacked superficiality. Many things in our lives go unresolved and leave us with an empty space that we carry with us for the rest of our lives. Some voids can't be filled despite our best efforts. We looked to others to fill these voids and often our disappointment is furthered. I appreciated that rawness in the book. Every chapter had something that moved me to tears because the book was far from superficial. It was a depiction of the many things that hurt us in our childhood that can go unresolved for generations and generations. So many things come around and it's hurtful when we see these things recur again in our children and even grandchildren. It's an honest story that many people can relate too because a domino effect is a real thing.

Just started at a cardiothoracic surgery practice and this has helped me out immensely. I was worried the text would be too "thick" but it is actually very easy to read. I'm a PA, and this works well for my level of knowledge, though it has far more than I would ever need to know. I would imagine it would be great for pharmacy students and pharmacists too.

I recommend this as an excellent resource for those who want to know the PK and PD of the drugs they prescribe, and research to back it up. Divided nicely and well organized. A very usable resource with excellent teaching sections, well written and easy to follow. Small enough to carry.

Excellent book. Just understand that the information presented is on a physician's level not a nurse's. I would still recommend this to a critical care nurse for the physiology aspect.

This is a fantastic academic achievement. Well written and cuts into controversies and clinical essentials. Extensive references of major trials and metaanalyses, still easy to read with clear interpretations of the results. Clear presentation of the essential mechanisms without becoming unnecessarily detailed for the non-research reader. Practically very useful and full of details that will optimize most internists and cardiologists prescriptions to get a little bit more out of the medications that so many physicians prescribe on a daily basis.

The book is excellent. I keep order ing new edition s when they are published. I don't like the inkling app much because it's unwieldy. Wish I could view it on kindle or iPhone kindle app which I think would probably be easier to use if it was available.

This book is packed with much information.

Great book!Práctico, didáctico y pocket

Beautiful book, in a very handy format. Regular on line updates are extremely valuable: you never feel like falling behind with so many things happening every single day in cardiovascular pharmacology. This book should be a regular companion to whoever cares for patients with heart disease; the doctors, nurses, students and cardiovascular researchers alike.

The book has mediocre recipes. Not much imagination and there is not one recipe I am excited to make. No dessert recipes. Pretty simple if you are not much of a cook. Some recipes have too many net carbs for 1 meal. There are much better Keto cookbooks out there.

Packaging .. Well I have mixed feelings about this . It looks and feels lovely .The cover is hard back with some embossed details .But are some things like replicas of Jim Henson's notes and letters, that are glued and tucked in kinda scrapbook like. So this isn't something to be handled by small kids. I'm actually considering getting some plastic to cover the book. Maybe even a comic book storage bag for the extras. The cover design matches very well with the 30th Anniversary editions of the DVD and Blu Ray disks as well as the soundtrack cd.The contents are so richly detailed and easy to understand . I can tell a lot of love and hard work went into the research. Some of the pics and cast/crew interviews were taken from other sources like the" Making of..." documentary from the dvd/blu ray disks. But that's OK since some of the cast and crew are no longer with us. (RIP Jim Henson and David Bowie ) That's the only way their "voices/words" could be included with the rest .The print quality . The text is easy to read. I haven't noticed any spelling or grammar errors . The font that was used in the chapter titles is very pretty and it fits in well the look and feel of Labyrinth .All of the photos look fantastic ! You can see almost every detail in the costumes and sets. The colors of Brian Fraud ' s art are crisp and vibrant !Conclusion ! If you are a Jim Henson fan, get this book !If you are a film buff ,get this book!If you are a history buff, get this book!If you love art and photography , get this book !If you are a Brian Fraud fan, get this book !If you are a David Bowie fan, get this book!

Speechless!! This book far exceeds any expectations. I absolutely love it. Of course, I just received it so it will take time to read and look through all of the treasure filled pages. Probably the best visuals I've seen in a book to date. Can't wait to read it.

Actually I bought this book for my Daughter for Christmas who has loved and been a big fan of the Labyrinth movie since it came out and also a big fan of David Bowie (As I am!) who stars in the movie, ....And She already has a lot of other Labyrinth collectables also and loves books so it fit right in!She loved this book (And so did I after I actually seen it after She opened it) as its full of all kinds of information about the movie, and comes with some of Henson's notes, sketches, movie poster and other in-depth stuff with interviews from most all involved about the behind the scenes making of the movie! The hardback book has a very beautiful cover with some embossing detail!A great collectors piece and would recommend to anyone who loves this movie, David Bowie or Jim Henson! ....You wont be disappointed!Thanx A Million Amazon for having it at a great price!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am such a huge huge fan of Labyrinth The day I was born was the day... David Bowie signed the contract to be the most amazing... Goblin King ever! The only reason I gave it a 4 star.. is because the package they sent it in was very "tight" around it, and sadly... the book it's self had some damage on the bottom corners of the book, it was all bent through to the pages even :(!!! other than that the book was just amazing and so worth getting if you're a fan of the story/movie.

I received this amazing book today and I'm absolutely in LOVE with it! I grew up watching Labyrinth and to this day, I still love it, and always will! It's so well detailed and a MUST HAVE for every Jim Henson and Labyrinth fan. It's definitely a big favorite of mine, especially with me also a fan of David Bowie, God rest his soul. He was AMAZING as Jareth. No one else could've done a better job at that role than him. He was meant for it. This book is something special to have and to remember him. A work of art is what this is. Just gorgeous!

I purchased this book as a gift for my sister who is a huge fan of the movie. I'm really impressed with the book itself. There is a lot of imagery and behind the scenes information. I love all of the added notes slipped in, like the storyboard drawings, the script pages with handwritten notes. The book itself was in great condition. The spine was still in tact, no bends in the pages. The book was also double wrapped in a bubble mailer that helped keep the corners from getting damaged. Great book and great seller!

Absolutely beautiful and breathtaking! Full to the brim with art, pictures, and great background information. If you're a fan of the movie, you will not regret this purchase.

This book is AMAZING...very obviously a labor of love. I was one of the many children who grew up watching & loving this movie. There are SO many little tidbits of information and behind the scenes photos...every page is entralling. If you're a fan of the movie...or Jim Henson or David Bowie or Terry Jones or Brian Froud...you NEED this!

Review

"Pachirat's extraordinary narrative tells us about much more than abused animals and degraded workers. It opens our eyes to the kind of society in which we live."--Peter Singer, author of Animal Liberation"A lucid writer, Pachirat excels in explaining how a slaughterhouse works."--Ted Conover, The Nation"The book is superbly written, especially given the grimness of the subject."--Mark Bittman, The New York Times, Opinionator column"A fascinating, gut-wrenching study--but absolutely not for the weak of stomach."--Kirkus Reviews"A truly stunning achievement. Every Twelve Seconds takes us into the slaughterhouse and asks: Why do we work so hard to conceal the daily routine of industrialized killing? The result is a masterpiece that is as sophisticated as it is hard to put down."--Steve Striffler, author of Chicken: The Dangerous Transformation of America's Favorite Food"By far the most thorough and immersive accounting of slaughterhouse operations in contemporary agribusiness."--Erik Marcus, author of Meat Market: Animals, Ethics, & Money"Pachirat's prose and tone are readable, horrific, and compelling. The documentary spell it casts recalls the steady, unflinching eye of Orwell's Road to Wigan Pier. Astonishing."--John Bowe, author of Nobodies: Slave Labor in Modern America and the Dark Side of the New Global Economy"Timothy Pachirat's courageous study of kill floor work exposes the fiction of 'humane' slaughter. This book is required reading for people who care about animals and for those interested in how distance and concealment operate in our society."--Gene Baur, President of Farm Sanctuary and author of Farm Sanctuary: Changing Hearts and Minds About Animals and Food". . . a detailed and brilliantly executed ethnography of an industrialized slaughterhouse in Omaha . . . its clear, jargon-free prose will make it accessible to both graduate and undergraduate students across disciplines."--Clarissa Rile Hayward, author of De-facing Power"A profoundly sobering exploration of the interplay between the imperatives of the modern meatpacking industry and the dehumanizing slaughter of cattle."--Ian Shapiro, author of The Real World of Democratic Theory"As a lawyer who has learned the food industry's hidden truths from whistleblowers and insiders, I commend Pachirat for sharing his philosophical and physical exploration of the obscured world of animal agriculture."--Amanda L. Hitt, Director, Food Integrity Campaign Government Accountability Project"[I]t would take an exceptionally visceral, in-depth account to make a meaningful contribution to the literature of animals suffering for our nourishment. That's exactly what Timothy Pachirat provides in Every Twelve Seconds."--Tom Bartlett, Chronicle of Higher Education"From June to December 2004, Pachirat (politics, New Sch.) worked at a cattle slaughterhouse in Nebraska. During his tenure, he worked in three distinct areas: in the cooler as a liver hanger, on the killing floor herding cattle to the knocking box, and in quality control. Through these disparate positions, he gained a thorough understanding of the formal and informal rules that govern American slaughterhouses. His conclusions are grim--bureaucracy and ineptitude combine in a way that does not bode favorably for food safety. He argues that industrialized slaughter is a hidden world tolerable only because it is invisible to most. Repugnant tasks like the ones associated with processing cattle should be more transparent and would perhaps be duly transformed as a result. Complete with meticulous diagrams showing each worker's position in the slaughterhouse, descriptions of each worker's job duties, and an appendix detailing cattle body parts and their uses, this compelling documentary work illuminates in great detail the workings of an industrial slaughterhouse. VERDICT For anyone curious about the origin of beef in America or those interested in the politics of concealment."--Diana Hartle, Univ. of Georgia Lib., Athens, Library Journal"The fascination of Every Twelve Seconds lies in the meaty main chapters, which recount Pachirat's passage through the hiring process and then into the factory and abruptly out of it, five months later."--Ted Conover, The Nation"Pachirat thinks about the larger issues of killing in a satisfying, comprehensive way: how people in the plant handle it, and how he did."--Ted Conover, The Nation"This is a masterful expose, written in crystalline prose. In tying the cruelty and dehumanization of industrialized slaughter to the politics of sight, the book adds to a growing canon of recent work . . . by extending people's understanding of and exacerbating human repugnance to one of the great moral failings of current times. Summing Up: Highly recommended."--Choice"This book is important. Very important. [. . .] buy it, read it, and share it with anyone who thinks they're at peace with eating animals. After all, what Pachirat shows without telling, is that every time we eat animals we promote suffering that, should we confront it directly, we'd deem entirely unacceptable."--James McWilliams, Eating Plants blog"A firsthand account of various kinds of slaughterhouse work [in which] Timothy Pachirat did it all. . . . We can count ourselves lucky that Every Twelve Seconds is a very good book if not a flawless one. . . . It forces upon us an unacademic yet profound question: How can something be right, if it feels so horribly wrong?"--B. R. Myers, The Atlantic"The Jungle for the 21st century."--Portland Press Herald"Every Twelve Seconds is a bold, gut-wrenching, beautifully written book. I suspect it has already found its way onto a number of syllabi for courses in animal and food studies. Yet its appeal is broader... its substantive and theoretical focus on violence, power, and "dirty work" should make the book a welcome addition to a myriad of "mainstream" sociology and political science courses as well. Finally, by complementing the vivid ethnographic narrative with penetrating yet accessible critical theory, Every Twelve Seconds also holds out the promise of contributing to the public discussion about the morality of organised slaughter."--Colin Jerolmack, Society & Animals

It starts out a bit dry and technical, but stay with it-- this true account of one man's experience in a typical large-scale (~2500 per day) cattle slaughterhouse and "processing" facility is insightful on many levels. It gives a very detailed account of exactly how these operations work, but for me what was the most eye-opening insights were those related to how complex the conflicts of interest are, and how they in turn make it impossible for either the USDA or the slaughterhouse workers to adequately monitor the quality of the "product" and the way the animals are treated. In addition, he infused his perspective with compassion for the people who work there, in addition to compassion for the animals. The way the reality of what is happening there has to be concealed even from the people who work there (by designing the building with lots of concealing walls, turns, etc) underscores how much that ignorance is required in order for people to do their jobs. The mental "compartmentalizing" of what they are doing reminds me of the same coping technique used by people working in the Nazi concentration camps. People do things they would never normally do when they mentally compartmentalize it and remove their focus from the suffering of the person or animal in front of them. It made it even more clear to me that the market for animal products must vanish in order for this insidious factory farming machine to come to a stop. And this books helps the reader take the step of SEEING and KNOWING that is essential in order for pity, mercy and compassion to follow. May pity, mercy, and compassion truly follow for everyone who reads this book.

There are a few thoughts that I have that should cause all business leaders, consumers and workers to reflect.First, what have we created in a culture that puts the most value on the lowest price? $8 per hour employees work in difficult conditions doing work, slaughtering a cow every 12 seconds, that most of us would not consider.Second, how far do we allow special interests to control legislative initiatives specifically and the government in general? Reading about the USDA's role and the perpetual chess game between the slaughterhouse managers and federal inspectors, it seems to me that investigative work like this book is one of the few tools that we have to shine a light on the things that happen on the kill floor. Iowa's and Florida's legislative proposals that would make this book and other communication (e.g., video, pictures) describing ag practices criminal acts are disturbing.I didn't enjoy the book. How can anyone enjoy graphic descriptions of the knocking box process and cutters? I learned a lot, though, and so will you. Use this book as a way to see through the cement walls of the industrialized killing machine and understand how your consumer behavior fuels it.

A fresh look at a rotten industry. Lacks the vegan bias often found in such works, refreshingly so, allowing for different flavors of insight.I once did quick a contract job in the admin offices of a huge slaughterhouse in Colorado, and begged the opportunity to look around - I needed to see where the food I ate came from, whether or not I liked what I saw. How many people have such an opportunity before them? After many days, and deliberation amongst various managers, a maintenance worker gave me the full informal "tour" - from feed lot to shipping room. This book was a helpful reminder of detailing that quick hour long tour which was too overwhelming and surreal to change have much effect on my dietary ways at the time. Oddly enough, my carnism was only reinforced! I was expecting much worse conditions frankly, much more overt suffering.Timothy Pachirat's book does a fine job documenting the more covert (as well as overt) forms of suffering that take place in the disassembly line, with an emphasis on the humans involved. The human element is essential. So much focus is placed on animal suffering (and rightly so), we often forget about the element of human suffering in the production process.Much like the clothing we all wear, very few people are directly involved in the production of the food they eat. There was much talk of Nike's labor practices overseas years ago, meanwhile most people haven't a clue of the company or location where their "foods" come from - a different kind of sweatshop hidden right in our own backyard.

The first part of the book is a little dry, when he is describing what every in of the factory looks like, but for the most part it's a story with some interesting characters. Great for a movie. Great writing! I'd like to know more about what the author does to stop this horrible industry. Is he vegan?

Pachirat is a scholar, but the book reads like it was written by a staff writer for The New Yorker. This is a great expose of the meat-industry, something that anyone who cares about workers or animals should read.

The book takes on a completely different perspective from many other documentaries on the same type of subject. Well written, objective and brings the voices and experiences of real people working in slaughterhouses to life.

To anyone who wants to know the truth, I recommend you read this book. It is truly an eye-opening account of something that takes place by the thousands on a daily basis.

Great read for all meat eaters

First, I think this book would benefit most by an update by the author that discussed the letter from Bohr which clearly implicated Heisenberg as attempting to develop a Nazi bomb and sought Bohr's aid, a letter that was released only a few years after the play was written. The play itself is gripping, though perhaps a bit repetitious, and I enjoyed reading it even more than viewing it in the theater where I think I missed some of the nuance of the text. It is a story of tragic and terrifying implication, and the author maintains an appropriate sense of tension and dread throughout. I don't know if it would appeal as much to a reader without at least some background in twentieth century physics and the seminal roles played by the characters of the play. I think it is important to have a sense of the greatness of the physics developed by the characters, and the state of excitement those developments engendered in the physics community of that time. In particular, Bohr's principal of complementarity is discussed at some length, but without any explication of its import, and as it is a difficult enough (even ephemeral, almost) an idea to begin to grasp, much of the attempt to resolve the conflict central to the play becomes quite murky.Nevertheless, I found it a wonderful play to read ( though I must admit to being an aficionado of the history of modern physics) which paints a fascinating picture of two of the greatest men in the history of science, grappling with the most horrifying implications of the genie they have helped release from the bottle.

COPENHAGEN is a play that welcomes a reading. The structure of pure dialogue between the physicists, Heisenberg, Bohr and Bohr's wife Margrethe( who represents the non-physicists in the audience) lends itself to the closer examination the written word gives us. Michael Frayn brilliantly imagines a moment frozen in time- Heisenberg arrives from Germany in 1941 to discuss something with his mentor, Bohr in occupied Copenhagen. Seizing upon this historical event and its mysterious circumstances, Frayn recreates the event from a variety of perspectives in pursuit of a greater truth. Was Heisenberg a hero, who kept the Nazi's from achieving the ultimate weapon, or a victim of his own carelessness? Reading the play, gives you the time to reflect upon how creatively Frayn frames each of his scenarios. The dialogue is never less than challenging, even while playing to the audience surrogate, Margrethe. Frayn uses these two great minds to introduce the audience into the realm of advanced physics and the moral ambiguities involved in the mixing of pure science with the nature of war. The forced civility between the two men emphasizes the underlying current of terror created by the Nazis rise to power and the oncoming dawn of an atomic age. Frayn does not offer any easy answers, to do so would be an insult to the wonderful work that has gone on before. The postscript alone is worth the price of the book for any fan of the play. It sets up the historical context for the play's creation and gives the reader a much greater understanding of where Frayn came up with many of the issues he examines in this work.

Frayn's play deals with Heisenberg's mysterious visit to his friend and mentor Bohr's home in Copenhagen. At the time, Heisenberg was working on the Nazi's atomic bomb project. No one really knows what the two scientists talked about. Frayn takes this to the next level by having his characters (the two scientists and Margrethe Bohr) not be sure either. The play incorporates the Uncertainty Principle into its plot. The characters aren't entirely sure what happened or what their motives were.Frayn did quite a bit of research on the subject, which works to the play's advantage. At the centre of the play is a discussion of whether Heisenberg went to Bohr for help to achieve the Nazi's goals or for help in warning the Allies. None of the characters are clear cut and all have flaws and virtues. The science never bogs down the play and is kept uncomplicated and understandable to common people. To me, it actually enhances the plot.

The idea for the play was just that, brillant. It is about a wartime meeting between the physicists Niels Bohr and Werner Heisenberg when Denmark was under German occupation. Margrethe Bohr, the third character, allowed the two men someone to play against. The characters are "talking ghosts". While based historical record, each character's thoughts were beautifully written based on what had been happening in the world in which they lived. It revealed the moral dilemma both men faced, the influence they had and how they handled the lifetime roles that they were given. I will look for the movie of the play.

An infrequently produced play about a meeting between Werner Heisenberg and Niels Bohr during WW II. There are copious notes so that you can follow what is historical and what is speculation. Fascinating cat and mouse game as each tries to determine how much the other knows about making an atomic bomb. Definitely helps appreciation of this play to know some undergraduate-level quantum physics.

Thought-provoking, funny, eerie and sad. It portrays the conflict of scientists' curiosity vs conscience, as shown in the relationship of two great physicists (and one's wife) in the lead-up to and aftermath of World War II- but unexpectedly, the debates occur among the characters after their deaths! Awesome.

I'll never forget his novel =The Russian Interpreter=. Nor will I ever forget =Copenhagen=, which does a masterful job of melding human drama with physics. Niels Bohr is, as we know, a very likeable figure, but Heisenberg is not; but Frayn manages to give both of them the contradictions dramatic personae need. The Afterword, I must say, is equally fascinating, Frayn tracing the path to his play and detailing some of the physics referred to in the play. Brilliant.
