This is a history book. It uses a theme, the tea trade, to follow the cultivation and preparation of tea and its impact on countries and continents, politics and people. You will learn about the opium wars, the isolation and re-opening of China. It makes the horticulture and geography of China come alive and you will be amazed at the diversity and beauty of plants that originated in China.Extremely well written, it is exciting, interesting and informative. All history books should be written this way, showing the interrelationships between cultures, economics, politics, agriculture, and commerce. It is understanding of how forces, individually and together, drive events that makes history come alive, makes it interesting and makes it relevant.You will enjoy it and be possessed of new insights. You will also want to go out and buy some tea.

For a fine-tea geek like myself, this book was enthralling. But even if that magic leaf is NOT your cup of tea, learning about the history of this rare commodity and its power in world economies is worth the read. Ms. Rose brings the career of Robert Fortune to life and illuminates the monopolistic power of the famous East India Company, tool of Britain's empire-building strategy. Rose reports history yet tells a story of living people set against a backdrop of culture clashes, espionage, political gamesmanship, and scientific discovery. Whether you're into tea, botany, sociology, history or just love a good page-turner, this book is for you. We learn that Fortune, a prominent British botanist, led the largest theft of intellectual property known to man: tea growing and processing secrets held closely by the Chinese. The social justice component is also an important theme running throughout the book. We learn of the intensive labor required to produce the teas that so captivated the upper classes of the time (and still captivate average people like myself). I even learned that American history books once again whitewashed the truth: those Chinese railroad laborers of the mid-1800s were actually victims of human trafficking; indentured servants at best, outright slave labor at worst. Despite all these harsh truths, Rose keeps the narrative both factual and interesting without crossing over into preaching. You cannot help but root for Fortune through all his failures and successes. The book is eye-opening and completely engrossing.

A fascinating story, told in a less than fascinating fashion. The book suffers from a lack of good maps and helpful illustrations -- probably budget constraints set by the publisher and not by the well-meaning author.

After listening to some podcasts about tea, I became interested in the history. I really enjoyed this book, I think it is very well written and, it's very interesting to read how how tea spread around the world. These were the days of courageous botanists and travelers who made many discoveries.Fortune's adventures and successes not only made tea spread around the world but at that time British gardeners could also suddenly enjoy the beautiful and exotic plants from other regions in the world. Fascinating to read about the influence of the East India company in the various regions around the world, and how this slowly changed. It gives you a lot of details and facts about the middle of the 19th century but is also reads like fiction. I love to see more from this author.

I purchased this for a history book club. If you enjoy readable (meaning non academic ivory tower, infinitesimally detailed oriented garbage that doesn't go anywhere) you will enjoy this book. What a wild combination of Indiana Jones and pbs garden shows. Really interesting concepts tha I have not seen anywhere else in an eminently readable format. I keep saying readable, because so much history is well, not.

Delightful read for those of us addicted to tea and prone to enjoying history. I am not inclined to believe or disbelieve her reportage, but am inclined to enjoy her point of view. Her writing style is engaging and the bottom line from my experience is I am now passionate about finding more information about "The John Company," Mr. Fortune and the history of the East India Company from Elizabeth 1 forward. Now That's something!The impact of such a simple thing as importing tea and the history and social impact are compelling, whether or not her dialogue or empathic comments are accurate. The net-net is, this is a good read. Other reviews critique the scholarly issues and miss the point entirely. This is a book about a frame of reference, of time and place, and the footnotes and accuracy of conversations are unimportant.Methinks the reviewers who attack the book on scholarly grounds have no concept of the Journalistic license popularized, but not invented, by Truman Capote ["In Cold Blood"] in the non-fiction novel genre. [The non-fiction novel is a literary genre which, broadly speaking, depicts real historical figures and actual events narrated woven together with fictitious allegations and using the storytelling techniques of fiction. The non-fiction novel is an otherwise loosely-defined and flexible genre. The genre is sometimes referred to as or faction, a portmanteau of "fact" and "fiction".]I only hope Ms. Rose has another book in the writing. I am thrilled with the doors opened to other historical adventures.

This book tells the story of a botanist who traveled through portions of China digging up tea plants, learning how best to cultivate them and how to make the best tea. This information (and the plants) was transported to India, then a British colony, and to the mother country. The book is well-written and interesting reading. There are many stories that enlighten us on how the world we now know got to be the way it is. This work tells an interesting portion of human interaction.

Accurate product and quick delivery

This book is well edited and does a good job of explaining an area of the law that is nearly unexplainable.

I've used this book in my Election Law class, both as a student and now as a law professor. I've found it extremely thorough in all respects. It accumulates every major piece of scholarship and case, no small feat, in its pages. It is nicely organized and structure with a natural flow, opening with the right to vote, carrying through the practical administration of elections, and concluding with campaign finance issues. My students have found it quite readable. And, best of all, it's about half the price of a typical legal casebook.

I've taught out of this excellent coursebook in recent years and am happy with it. It offers a broad survey of election law by editors who are thoroughly knowledgeable in the field. They present many of the relevant cases and authorities in the form of concisely written notes, making the length of the readings manageable for students and instructors alike. The editors’ comments on election law are fairminded, sophisticated, and well documented. Moreover, the book’s extensive references to political science literature illuminate many of the empirical realities that underlie the doctrinal controversies. The editors also publish regular updates in order to keep up with the latest trends in this rapidly evolving field. The book is especially strong in its coverage of election administration and the role of money in politics, including bribery and campaign finance regulation. All told, I would recommend the book highly to any potential instructor who is interested in breaking into the election law field. And it would make a good research reference for others as well.

This is one of the best casebooks in election law. It surveys the field broadly and authoritatively. The cases in it are nicely presented and superbly edited, and the notes following them succinctly summarize the important debates in the field. This casebook also uniquely devotes five entire chapters to campaign finance, giving that topic a seriousness and depth that no other publication can match. Campaign finance is the most important topic in American politics today. It is hard to imagine anyone ever treating its nuances and complexities as superbly as the authors of this book do.

I have taught law for almost 15 years, and this is the best casebook I have ever used. Not just the best Election Law casebook, but the best casebook on any subject. It is exceptionally well organized, very "teachable", and carefully re-edited for each new edition. Supplements are timely, and the authors are great about supporting faculty using the book. I highly recommend it.

This excellent book surveys the field of election law. The cases have been edited carefully, and the authors' notes are concise, thoughtful, and (rare for a casebook) helpful to students and teachers alike. I have taught from this book many times, and my students and I are always happy with it.

I hardly ever write reviews but I feel compelled to share my wife, Robyn's, experience after five weeks on Dr. Fuhrman's diet. At 190 pounds and 5' 8", she was about 50 pounds overweight. She had been on Glipizide for diabetes, Atenolol and Lisinopril for high blood pressure, and Gemfibrozil for high triglycerides. Her last A1C was 9.5; well in the danger zone for diabetics. Most of her fasting blood glucose readings were above 200.After the initial five weeks, she is off all of those medications. Her last blood pressure reading was 117/78. Her fasting glucose hovers around 90-100. She has already lost 15 pounds as well.Tonight, we decided to have a cheat meal. She ate a full filet of salmon with two cobs of corn and a full cup of great northern beans with onions and garlic. This is a meal with nearly 100 carbs that should have sent her blood glucose soaring. Two hours after this meal her blood glucose was 97! We didn't believe that was possible so we measured it a second time and it was 94.Needless to say, tomorrow we will be back on this diet permanently with only an infrequent special occasion to interrupt it. The food is satisfying and the results are phenomenal!If you suffer from type 2 diabetes but are willing to dedicate yourself to this diet, make no mistake, it will reverse your disease and give you a great chance at a long, complication-free life.Thank you, Dr. Fuhrman!8-17-2016 UPDATENew test results from recent blood work:Triglycerides six week ago - 259. Now 110Total cholesterol six weeks ago - 193. Now 173.A1C six weeks ago - 8.9. Now 7.3. (Since A1C is a three month average that 7.3 is taking into account the prior two months of pre-diet eating. When adjusted for that, it actually would be an A1C for the last month of around 5.0.)Blood pressure: 118 over 72.All without medication and only four weeks on the diet!

Great information in the book. My only complaints are: The recipes to follow in this book are ridiculous. The doctor calls for a lot of special seasonings and sauces from his website that are $$$. And he uses carrot juice as a base for a lot of stuff- and it is expensive. Unless you have your own juicer and want to buy a ton of carrots to keep up with what the recipes call for. Take home I got is to eat a more plant based diet. Limit meats- eat more beans/nuts... Cut the refined carbs. Eat fruit... there is a membership to this doc's website, but I decided not to get it bc the docs recipes are not practical and the membership is pricey.

This book has totally changed my life! I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes in early October. After seeing my results online, I was on Amazon looking at diabetic cookbooks as I knew I was going to have to totally change my diet. I came across this book and the title caught my eye. I read what I could online and immediately had it sent to my Kindle so I could begin reading it right away. When I received the diagnosis, I refused to go on medication and allow this diagnosis to control my life. I started this eating plan on October 14th. In 6 weeks my A1C dropped my 11% to 6.9%! I had also lost 30 pounds. My doctor was amazed and I am on no medication. It was a little hard at first, because I was used to eating a lot of fast food, cookies, crackers etc.. and I knew this would be a big change for me. But when you begin to understand what all the bad food is doing to your body, it gives you a whole new understanding. Though a couple of times at the beginning I was tempted to not continue I had to remind myself what was at stake. Either go on medication to "manage" my diabetes or totally changed my eating lifestyle and not be on any medication. I also had my lipid panel checked again on Jan. 12th, and my cholesterol numbers have completely reversed and are amazing and my blood pressure is also great. I have lost a total of 40 pounds and am no longer shopping "plus size" clothes. Several people at work have commented on my weight loss and have asked me what I'm doing. I have shared this book with so many people including my two sisters and the nurse at my Dr.s office also wanted to know what I was doing. If you have type 2 diabetes, you need to buy this book! It will totally change your life!

I was diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes and put on Metformin on June 26th, 2013. I started the ADA diet and followed it 100% for a few weeks and could not get my blood sugar to go below 140. Finally i began to panic and called my doctor, he told me to get used to it. He said I would be on metformin my whole life and eventually insulin. At that point i knew something wasn't right and began to do a lot of research. On July 13th I went to the book store and found this book after looking at 10 or so others. I read the book from end to end that night because everything Dr. Fuhrman was saying made absolute sense. I started the diet that day and the next morning my blood sugar was down to 100, the next day was in the 90's and now i have a fasting blood sugar between Mid 70's and the 80's. My doctor took me off the metformin after just one week of being on this lifestyle change. I have lost over 30 pounds in a month. I now work out twice a day and still have tons of energy. I have lost 6+ inches around my waist and I am off my high blood pressure medication too. I have about 20 more pounds to go till my body finds its ideal weight. The great news is, this is a lifestyle I can live with, it makes sense and it works. God Bless Dr. Fuhrman. I wish the ADA would stop enabling consumers and tell them the truth. You can get off the drugs, you can help yourself, but you have to have a correct lifestyle and diet. No more processed foods.
