Review
"A great resource for any adolescent (or 40-year-old, for that matter) struggling with weight or body image issues. A funny and entertaining treatment of a serious topic. The Naughtons deliver the latest in health science in a unique way that entertains as well as informs, with a captivating story punctuated with brilliant cartoon illustrations. Should be mandatory reading in every 6th grade class." - Mark Sisson, author of The New Primal Blueprint and publisher of Marksdailyapple.com"We could debate what is the single most important element of raising kids, but I doubt anyone would argue that feeding our kids well is (or should be) near the top of the list. But what does "feed our kids well" really mean? In Fat Head Kids, Tom Naughton explores this touchy subject, and what he has to share will likely surprise but also inspire you." - Robb Wolf, New York Times bestselling author of The Paleo Solution"Are you a kid (of any age) who’d like to journey through the galaxy of food, to find the planet of good health and an attractive body? Fat Head Naughton – oops, I mean Tom – is the pilot you need. Strap yourself in for a voyage of learning and fun!" - Paul Jaminet, author of Perfect Health Diet

Overall, this is an excellent book about diet for older elementary school kids or middle schoolers. The material is up to date. It is close to a kids version of Jason Fung’s The Obesity Code or kids version of Ivor Cummins / Jeffry Gerber’s Eat Rich Live Long. The science is all there, it is just presented in an engaging and easy to understand format. The book talks about the history of the Food Pyramid/My Plate and references the 1940’s version of US government dietary guidelines (and why the 1940’s version was better for health). The book uses a great analogy to describe the hormonal model of weight. The limitations of the calories in / calories out are discussed. The book is unique in that it also discusses why some people gain weight easily and other people do not gain weight (with simple genetic descriptions and research behind some of the genetic differences). The book even talks about gut health and the importance of good sleep for weight control.I do have two minor quibbles with the book. 1) There is no discussion of intermittent fasting and why fasting is different than “starvation diets†that reduce calories over a long term. And 2) The section that talks about health benefits is written in a way that sounds like a healthy diet will cure most illnesses (including ADHD). While it may make some symptoms a bit better, this type of diet does not replace medications for all kids (especially the ones that truly have neurological differences that cause ADHD). I wish it did .....Again, this is a great book overall. It also helps facilitate a discussion about diet with my kids. It makes it easier for my kids to understand why we eat the way we do — and why other families can choose to eat differently, in a way that is better for them. The book is compassionate and funny about diet, weight, and health. I am very glad to have found this book.
If only I had this book when I was an overweight kid!!It explains how insulin resistance starts and how some kids are just programmed differently. They use an excellent spaceship analogy through the book to explain how the body deals with food. Including the strange visit to the Planet of the Preposterous Pyramid from the 1980s until just a few years ago.Very easily explains Leaky Gut and how autoimmune diseases start, as well as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. It is perfect for adolescents as well as adults that just want an easy way to grasp that "eat less and exercise more" was terrible idea for weight loss. I use these examples in my practice to help out my patients and this is a great resource.
I just finished reading through this book with my 10, 8, and 5 year old. It is laid out in a logical, easy-to-understand order, so each chapter builds on the previous. The explanations and illustrations are interesting and engaging for the children--and for me! This book is a great resource for anyone who wants an accessible, helpful, accurate description of the body chemistry behind weight gain and loss. Buy a copy for your kids. Buy a copy for your doctor. Buy 20 copies for your high school health class! I wish this had been available when I was a kid, or at least when I was teaching public school. My oldest is now planning "protective foods" meals with me.
Me and my kids enjoy this book. I want my kids to understand health, how the body works and not fall in line with other sheep and grow up believing that low fat and grains are good for you. I recently found Keto and realized the amazing health benefits. I do not eat sugar, processed carbs or grains. I eat a whole food based diet with lots of healthy fats and limit processed foods as much as I can. I try to instill this in my girls as well. My hope is if they understand more AND see me eating a LCHF diet maybe they won't be fooled by the medical myths out there.
Highly recommend this book for kids who eat REAL FOODS. It explains WHY we get hungry, HOW digestion works in regards to macro and micronutrients, and WHAT and WHY foods make some people gain weight. It even delves into the problem of observational studies and the development of the food pyramid. My son didn't want to read it, so I've been reading it aloud and he's thanked me the past few days for teaching him about nutrition and digestion. Tom Naughton makes it fun and his wife's illustrations really help keep a tween's interest going.
I sat down to read this with my 10 year old son who is struggling with weight and quickly skimmed a few pages of the first 2 chapters only to realize that it constantly refers to the "fat kid" and how no one likes to be the "fat kid". Even if this book has some good information (which it seems quite technical for a kid), all my son would hear if I read it was that he is the fat kid and feel bad about himself. I was so hoping for a book about nutrition and health that didn't focus on being labeled "fat".
How I WISH I'd had this book as a kid, or even in my twenties or thirties before yo-yo dieting and repeated futile attempts at Weight Watchers left me with a broken metabolism and a long history of feeling guilty for something that wasn't my fault. But I'm glad I have it now, because with simplicity and clarity it explains the things I've learned over several years of reading in a way that will help me remember them and explain them to others. I'll be buying more copies to give away, too. Should be required reading in every school in the country -- including the medical schools!
I counted (on Amazon) the number of books that I have purchased and read on health, nutrition, genetics etc. 153. Out of all those books, this one does the best job of explaining what is important in an easy and succinct manner. It is now my go to book for giving to people who want to change their health outlook. The movie “FatHead†helped me get started on the right track about 8 years ago and now this book encapsulates a lot of what I would write if I had to sum up what I have learned. It is perfect for its target audience (kids) but also a fabulous primer for adults. There should be a 10 star special category for books such as this one.
