I actually liked "The Viking" - the first book in this series. Although a bit childish, I felt it was written in a way that younger audiences would enjoy. It held some great moral messages and threw in historical info in a way that wouldn't seem like it was a school lesson. Unfortunately, the second book reads more like a girl's diary into how to get the cutest boy in the playground to take notice of you and make sure he picks you as his girlfriend. Predictable. Annoying in parts. I wanted something a bit deeper and didn't get more than a lead-up to the next book in the series. Too bad it can't convince me that going on would be enjoyable.

Recommend reading "The Viking" (Book 1 of the series) first. A good fast reading story that keeps the readers attention.A bit too much of a romance novel than I normally read, but I will read the next book in the series, "The Viking's Son", to finish the trilogy.

Marti Talbott writes enjoyable novels that you or your 10 year old could enjoy. Each comes with a little history, a little intrigue and a little romance. But beware - after the Viking series comes the Highlanders, then Marblestone Manor, then the “Lost” stories. Once hooked you will read them all.

Good storyline, but too many grammar and spelling errors. This is rampant in all her books that I've read. She apparently writes these books using a speech to text software, then doesn't proof for errors. Would have given a higher rating were it not for the distraction of the spelling errors. My suggestion... Hire a good proof reader if you can't catch the errors.

Another entertaining story continuing the tale of "The Viking". The Viking's Daughter is a delight. Reading stories of another time and another place without having to worry about foul language and smut is a true pleasure. You can almost hear all the voices and activiy and see the MacGreagor Keep. In fact the books make you want to be there. Oh to meet the Viking brothers. Nicely done!!!

Interesting story. Great characters. But, as with "the Viking" (first book in the series) my only complaint is that it was too short.

Very well written with interesting characters and plots easy to follow. A little romance, a little action: this novel is perfect for young adults. .. :-)

A delightful continuation of The Viking. It was fun learning what Stefan and Kannek's life was like after their marriage. This was the story of their eldest daughter, Catrina. And how she met the man of her dreams. Great story and plot twists. Very well written and lovable characters.

I am a physician who recently started working for a managed care organization. While I had some previous experience in managed care, I needed to have a fundamental tool to help me with areas I was not familiar with. This book fits that description entirely. It is an outstanding book which is designed for both and novice and intermediate level and I would highly recommend it.One of the nice things about this book is that the chapters themselves are self-contained; in other words, you can choose to read the individual chapters in whatever order you like, without reference to the prior chapters. There are sections in which it makes logical sense to read them in a specific order, but this is not an absolute.If you want to learn about managed care, brush up on what you know, or improve your baseline knowledge, I think that this book is for you. It's well-written, well-researched, and easy to read. A very worthy investment.

It feels like the authors of this book were paid by the word. Chapters have irrelevant sections and sections have unnecessary details. Some examples:-The section on member services describes a call center, including that call centers typically have cubicles with low walls to foster teamwork, an apparently critical detail for students of the healthcare system.-"24 hours per day, 7 days per week (referred to as 24/7)" for those who've never heard the term "24/7"-A section describing a system that used to be separate but has since been combined, followed by a description of how the two used to work when separate, "for clarity". I don't remember if the book even describes how it works now that it's combined.-List after list that include failed systems and ideas or outdated terminology. In some cases knowing what hasn't worked is useful, but mostly it's just clutter that detracts from the important points.-Lists of "keys" to success that include more than a dozen items, with questionable items such as "compassion"Yes, the book is comprehesive; however, the unnecessary detail clouds key points and bores the reader. This book could easily be cut in half without losing any critical information.

I'm a healthcare administration and management student and this is a really great resource even after the class was complete. I have found myself going to this book for references for my other courses. If you want to have a great managed care resource, this is your book. I first rented this book and bought it afterwards because I found it so useful.

This book does not assume any prior knowledge and provides a good intro to Fortran programming (also provides a short intro to programming in general). Goes over the essential elements needed to get started with Fortran and provides many examples. In fact, most of the concepts are demonstrated using actual coding examples. One drawback is that the index in this book is not extensive, so it does not serve quite as well as a reference. However, it still does a decent job in this department. After reading through this book I felt well-prepared to begin programming in Fortran. A nice complement to getting this book is to download one of the freely available Fortran documentation manuals (e.g. from Intel) to serve as a reference guide.

I was deeply disappointed with this book. I bought it really just to review Fortran and learn the features of Fortran 95 since I hadn't used Fortran since the early 90's, and '95 is practically a new language. It's not a terrible book. Just understand that the "Introduction" part of the title can't be emphasized enough. It might be fine for someone who has never learned programming in -any- language, but professional programmers fluent in at least one other language should not even consider it. Huge swaths of the book are wasted on excruciatingly banal explanations (which aren't even that good). The history part in the beginning is nice...except that it's a considerable chunk of the book and that's not what I was paying for. Other huge swaths are just space-filling code listings. And the whole thing has a "written on contract" feel...like Springer just committed to publishing something on Fortran and roped some academics into assembling some text. Again, if you're a complete beginner at programming (and not just Fortran) it might be OK. If you're anything else, forget it. I've never written a negative review before now, and never thought I'd have anything negative to say of a Springer book, but this was a huge disappointment.

I used this INTRO to get a 6th grader started with programming simple algebraic math expressions. Individual is now a 7th grader and is using structured methods to create C+ and C++ based games. I'm satisfied with Intro to Programming. Obviously, the student"s gears are well meshed.

It seems to be well-liked by those who like it, but I really don't like it. I'm not saying it's bad, but I think it's not the most appropriate book for me.I'm a statistician who needs to write programs in Fortran for Bayesian computations; I know enough about programming to be dangerous, but also enough to know that I'm not a programmer; I've written lots of lousy code in C and Java before swearing off them years ago; I'd rather program in Perl, S or bash.It seems hard to find good examples (for instance, how do I write a function that returns an array?). The appendix listing intrinsic functions is frequently hard to understand and atrociously designed and formatted.I expect if you read it cover-to-cover, you'd have a good understanding of, e.g., how exactly interfaces work, but it's hard to just jump in and find this information.

No previous coding experience in Fortran is assumed by the authors. Actually, no previous programming in any language. Fortran is quite easy to learn, compared to others like C++ or Java or C#. The book explains the differences between the 4 major recent versions of Fortran. Though some of you might quibble as to why the book even talks about Fortran 77. That originated in 1977!But the sheer mass of legacy code means that a lot still exists in F77. This market reality also has job implications. Some Fortran jobs will necessitate you being restricted to F77. Or F90. Hence the book's support for these. At least it does not talk about F66!

I got this book because my professor recommended it. I agree with him. I love this book. It starts with some history and basic stuff about computer and programming, which gives me some background knowledge. Then it explains programming in detail using examples. That makes me understand how to program. In addition, these examples are easy to follow and not trivial.

Definitively, an excellent book that I enthusiastically recommend. I've been programming in Fortran (mainly 77) some years ago, so I needed to recycle not only my knowledge about the language but also my way of focussing tasks susceptible of being programmed. This book fully fulfilled my expectations.

This book provides good coverage of Fortran 90 and 95 but the only Fortran 2003 discussion is four pages that list the features. Since I don't think listing the features constitutes "Coverage", I have given this book a low rating. I would have given it the lowest rating but the coverage of Fortran 90 and 95 is very helpful to me. I wish the authors had not misrepresented the content in the book's title.
