I'm a deaf educator and bought this book for the games and activities in the back of the book to play with my deaf kids and our ASL club (mostly hearing kids). It's awesome!!! It teaches basic sign and the kids have a blast with the games.

Having already studied ASL, I thought this book would be a good way to review, but due to the page layout, I could tell how confusing it would be for a novice. On nearly every bottom of the page of definitions, the sign appears, but the description is on the next page. And it's unclear if definitions refer to the sign above, or the sign below. If you're totally ignorant of ASL, this will be very confusing. And, at least according to MY teachers, some of the signs are incorrect. That may be regional, bit I doubt it. For myself, it was a waste of money, although it IS inexpensive. I would recommend purchasing the book THE JOY OF SIGNING as a much, much better of introducing yourself to ASL. Also, more needed to

I purchased book for my 13 year old child, as he felt bad for someone at school who was being bullied, and he didn't know how to communicate. He's been reading along with other 2 books purchased. He's gotten interested in learning along with his friends. It's got the kids on a roll. I would recommend it to anyone. Just to even have laying around. Once a child picks it up.. it will make them want to learn and be better civil servants. Thank you.

My great niece wanted to learn to sign and I found this book and thought it would be a fun way for her. Since she has gotten this book and once her homework was completed, she is reading and learning to sign with this fun book.

Horrible, clunky writing with stilted dialogue. I'm not sure if it's due to the book being a translation, but surely two translators could craft something better? Usually I love young adult fantasy books, especially with romance, but this one had me rolling my eyes and hating my reading experience. The premise is somewhat interesting, but the characters are two-dimensional and lots of things happen with no resolution (she really should have called the police on Felix, wtf). Evelyn cries all the time, Jared has blue eyes (like, omg), and all their families died. All these details are gone into ad nauseum with a lack of focus on good storytelling.I selected this book as my choice for Kindle First this month and do not plan on reading any subsequent books in this series.

For the life of me, I can't understand why this book has so many five star reviews. The story wasn't realistic at all. The lead character, Evelyn, is a first year at Oxford who seems to be taking about 18 separate courses, 17 of them psychology courses. I was half expecting the next course mentioned to be psychology of toe nails. And with all these courses at one of the best colleges in the world, she has very little to no coursework. The characters are supposed to be British, but the dialogue is more reminiscent of a 1950s I Love Lucy episode. The main character is just dumb. She discovers "secrets" but somehow seems to forget them just to discover it again two paragraphs later. And the worst part of the book, it follows the exact plot of Twilight. It's like the author took her outline and transposed it against Twilight. New girl moves to new town. She sees a boy in class and falls instantly in love. She avoids her for six weeks but comes back because he can't stay away. He saves her from a near rape, and they decide they love each other deeply on their first dinner date after the tragedy. His adoptive family, some dislike her because they believe she's not good for him, but some love her for no reason. If Meyers wants to file a lawsuit, I'll testify. And that's the real sin of this book: Forcing me to not only relive Twilight, but forcing me to defend Meyers!

I just finished this book & immediately came to write my review.While this book wasn't perfect (few books ever are), it was a great story & a new twist on an old legend that I completely enjoyed.Let's get the critiques out of the way first.When I began reading this book, I was under the impression that this story was not set in modern times. Then it became clear that it was supposed to be modern times & I was a bit put off by the seeming inconsistency. It wasn't so bad that it was difficult to read nor do I feel it detracted from the story (the worst of it is in the beginning). It was after reading & seeing the cover of the second book that I came back and saw that these stories are being translated into English from another language. That explains the phrases in the story & dialogue that seem out of place to us here in the States. For me, the story line was interesting enough & the oddities were mild enough that I was still happy to read on.What I really enjoyed was the way the reinvented an old legend & made it something new & interesting. I can't give any details without spoiling the book. I like that many of the questions that arose while reading the story were answered in this book. This way, I feel this part of the story & mystery is closed and the next book will move on to the new dilemma facing our beloved characters.Speaking of the next book, this book does end off on a cliffhanger. This is not a new device used in novels. This writing tool is something even television shows & the rare movie will employ. So why do so many people have an issue with it in novels? I know that I am eagerly awaiting the Nov 22 release date so that I can devour the next stage in this series. I can't wait to see how the characters resolve the dilemma they're facing at the end of this book.

I managed to get 80% through and couldn't go any further. I found the characters to be one dimensional, the plot to be incredibly slow and the story line not engaging in the slightest. There is a lot of wasted space and little story lines that add nothing to the overall plot. How many times do I have to read the same pages following Evelyn through each of her classes, to lunch, then to bed? I understand there cannot be action and suspense at every turn but most of the book was down right boring. Evelyn, although attending a prestigious college and managing to keep up after starting months behind the other students, isn't entirely the brightest girl. She doesn't seem to care or even think in the slightest that the guy that is throwing himself at her repeatedly and in a sense stalking her, might actually have feelings for her. Seriously? And the 'love story' between her and Jared is just downright unbelievable. They speak a total of 12 words to each other and then suddenly are OBSESSED with one another and dating? Most of the way through, I couldn't have cared less about where these two were headed. I didn't know if I was reading a love story or if there was a big picture and didn't care any longer to even find out.

Rationale for the Text Engineering by Design is intended to serve a multiplicity of functions while conveying the excitement and sheer fun of solving technical problems in creative yet practical ways. It provides an introduction to the engineering profession through numerous case histories that illustrate various aspects of the design process. This is important because students can come to appreciate the interdisciplinary aspects of engineering problem solving as they work with case problems or review case histories in design which demonstrate (sometimes in a very startling but effective manner) valuable lessons in engineering practice. Many engineering colleges are continuing to revise their curricula in response to the ABET 2000 accreditation requirements. Various design and manufacturing topics are being integrated more into undergraduate engineering programs, and new mechanisms for delivering this course material are being developed with a general focus upon experiential learning by undergraduates. Engineering by Design has been developed as an aid for these important efforts. It is written in a way that I hope will be both engaging and accessible to students while maintaining the accuracy and rigor that one would expect of an engineering textbook. Freshmen and sophomores often have little substantive knowledge of professional engineering practice; indeed, these students may have many misconceptions about the actual work that engineers perform and the types of problems with which they wrestle. The initial chapters and case histories of this book will give students a limited but informed understanding of the engineering profession. Later material (including case problems through which students can apply their newly acquired knowledge of design) then broadens and deepens this understanding, and this material can be used in a wide variety of courses including senior capstone project classes. A list of appropriate courses is given later in this preface. Structure Case Histories Engineering By Design introduces students to such critical design topics as needs assessment, problem formulation, modeling, patents, abstraction and synthesis, economic analysis, product liability, ergonomics, engineering ethics, hazards analysis, design for X, materials selection, and manufacturing processes. The engineering design process provides the skeletal structure for the text, around which are wrapped numerous case histories that illustrate both successes and failures in engineering design. According to Larry Richards, Director of the Center for Computer Aided Engineering at the University of Virginia, engineering cases generally fall into one of three categories. They are case studies, case histories, and case problems. A case study presents an ideal or benchmark solution that may serve as a model for future work. In contrast, a case history describes how a problem was solved, and points out the consequences of the decisions that were made. This text contains numerous case histories; the more extensive ones have been collected at the end of each chapter so that they will not interrupt the flow of material in the chapters. Each case history has been selected to illustrate a particular principle, procedure, or lesson in the text. Students and faculty can use these case histories as important resources for study, reflection, and discussion. Design Project Assignment Template The text ends with a unique Design Project Assignment Template (immediately following Chapter 11) that the instructor can use to select and assign tasks to students who are working on a design project. With this template, instructors can directly correlate their students' efforts on a project with appropriate material from each chapter of this text. Of course, not all assignments need to be performed; the template provides a "menu" from which instructors can select tasks and topics that they wish to emphasize. This template also provides an abbreviated summary of the text with key concepts highlighted in bold type. Students can use this template to review and correlate the critical elements of the design process as they develop an overall perspective of the material presented throughout the text. If a term or concept in the template is not understood completely, the student should recognize that lack of understanding or comfort with the concept as a warning flag. The student should then return to the (referenced) section in the text in which the concept is discussed and study further. Through such efforts, the template can serve as an important learning aid. A sample section of the design template is shown in Figure P.1 Case Problems Finally, a case problem sets forth an open-ended (perhaps unsolved) situation that leaves the solution up to the reader. It can be a learning module designed to put students to work in teams to define the problem and solve it through research, discussion, and/or lab work. Four extended case problems have been prepared for use as active learning modules; they follow the Design Project Assignment Template. Each of these case problems contains a substantial amount of background information, as well as proposed or existing solutions, so that students will be able to "hit the ground running" if any of these problems is chosen for a design project. Moreover, these case problem modules serve as examples of the depth, breadth, and type of information that one should acquire about a technical problem before embarking upon the development of a design solution. The background material in each problem provides sufficient information to understand the general parameters and factors that must be considered during a design effort; however, students should seek additional information beyond that contained in the case problems. Immediately following the four case problems is a list of 50 case problem topics, which describe situations that call for engineering design solutions. Since these descriptions are very brief, students will need to research the background and current status of each situation. Again, the four extended case problem modules described above can serve as examples of the type of background data that should be collected via such research.
