There's very little I can add to the many excellent reviews of Rabbi Telushkin's wonderful compendium of Jewish knowledge. Written for Jews who don't know much about their own religion, or well-intentioned, inquisitive Gentiles, the book is an encyclopedia of facts and ideas about the Jewish people; the history of Israel; the Torah, Talmud, and other salient texts; and quite a bit more. From such basics as the Ten Commandments to such contemporary phenomena as the Jewish Defense League, Rabbi Telushkin explains clearly, concisely, and thoughtfully the various subjects, with what might be called "sympathetic objectivity." This isn't a scholarly work, but it contains scholarship; it's not quite a "popular" book in the vein of "Judaism for Dummies;" it's somewhere in between: comprehensive, thought-provoking, and indescribably helpful.I recently bought my fifth copy of this book: I have a problem keeping it, because I keep giving it away to the special people in my life. And I'm a Christian! I recently gave a copy to a friend who is half-Jewish. Then I bought a copy for my Kindle, so I won't be tempted to give it away!Very highly recommended.

I highly recommend this book for anyone seriously thinking of converting to Judaism or for anyone who wants to know more about the faith and the people (I bought two copies, one for me and one for a Christian friend who wanted to learn more but in a less complicated manner). The "chapters" are short but concise and you can easily read a chapter while brushing your teeth. It is also separated into sections for history, holidays, and lifecycle as well as many great Jewish thinkers and influential events.Rabbi Telushkin is Orthodox so keep that in mind when you read it as it comes from and orthodox perspective.

No matter how much you know about the Jewish topics/topics associated with religion and ritual, you will learn something new or take away something fresh in this wonderful volume. It's SO well-written, and shows such deep knowledge of a wide range of subjects. This was really well thought-out, and well written. I will read it every couple of years.

This is an excellent overview of Judaism... especially for non-Jews, I think. It gives a broad overview, including several aspects of Judaism, but is not so detailed that it taxes the casual reader. I really enjoyed learning more about this ancient religion & Teluskin did a fine job of giving me just enough information. In fact, Teluskin did such a good job on this book that I ordered another of his books concerning archaeology in the Holy Lands. Highly recommend as an introduction for those needing/wanting to learn more about Judaism.

Understanding Jewish beliefs is fundamental not just for Jews but also for all monotheist religions that derived from this body of philosophical knowledge. Ethical monotheism remains particularly relevant in the 21st century and Rabbi Telushkin continues to make major contributions in all his books with his erudition and easily accessible style. A must read. Check also Jewish Wisdom from the same author.

I highly recommend this book to those who are interested in Judaism, interested in converting to Judaism, and to those of the Jewish faith who want to better understand their history, faith, beliefs, etc. This book may also be useful to those of the Christian faith who want to better understand how, when, and why, Christianity broke off from Judaism. It is a rather large book, but it is a great read! Highly recommend!

I am studying the history of Israel and Jewish background. When I first received this book, I thought there was no way I was going to be able to read it. It is a very thick, thin paged book - with no pictures! However, it is split up in very small chapters/sections; so I was hooked after the first page. I can actually read for 5 minutes or an hour, and am understanding everything.

Well known for his ability to explain physics to nonspecialists, Ford also brings to life the physics of fission and fusion and provides a brief history of nuclear science from the discovery of radioactivity in 1896 to the ten-megaton explosion of "Mike" that obliterated a Pacific Island in 1952. Ford worked at both Los Alamos and Princeton's Project Matterhorn, and brings out Matterhorn's major, but previously unheralded contribution to the development of the H bomb. Outside the lab, he drove a battered Chevrolet around New Mexico, a bantam motorcycle across the country, and a British roadster around New Jersey. Part of the charm of Ford's book is the way in which he leavens his well-researched descriptions of the scientific work with brief tales of his life away from weapons.

I bought this book originally to get more history on the Ulam vs. Teller event. My point of view was from a long background on von Neumann and computers and knowing Stan Ulam's work and his relationship with von Neumann. Before I add detail one has to wonder if Teller at the time the concepts for the Teller-Ulam version of the bomb were being developed had had the guts and maturity to give credit where credit was due, including credit to Richard Garwin, then Kenneth Ford would have written quite a different book, if written it all, since much of the conflict would have been removed. Teller could always have said, "Stan Ulam brought in a new decisive concept that motivated me to take a new approach, and after this was done, Richard Garwin designed the bomb, and I really have to give credit to the two of them, and the rest of the team to making this work."The book thus has a lot to do with Teller. You really have to understand that before all this coming up to the 1940's Teller had a really good reputation. He was always very helpful to other people and many physicists would proclaim this. Freeman Dyson to this day is big backer of Teller. Something happened during the 1940's through the Los Alamos days which began to change him. Thus the Teller we see in this book at the time it takes place is a changed Teller.What was really new to me was Chapter 14, "The Garwin Design," which probably was old hat to many physicists. In Chapter 15 Marshall Rosenbluth's discovery of the pre-detonation possibility of the fission trigger is discussed which is almost amusing, but illustrates the role of these brilliant young physicists in making things really work.Ford tells these stories so well in this memoir or personal history which is after all 65 years after the occurrence. He also fills in some history of the computations needed. George Dyson in "Turing's Cathedral" discusses from an Ulam and von Neumann point of view similar topics. If he had this book, he could have added probably some material in the pertinent chapters.Also parenthetically looking at a picture of Ford as a young man in 1952 he looks the type who would do square dancing and run around on his motorcycle. Although it took him five years at Princeton at that time, accounting for two years working on hydrogen bombs, he did pretty well. He mentions Hans Bethe several times including Bethe's laconic presence in several review meetings. I remember someplace Feynman saying during Los Alamos days that they used to compete in doing computations on physics problems and that he never could beat Bethe. The alpha people Ford talks about in both mathematics and physics were exceptionally gifted and we get Ford's view of them back at that time. The book to me is a superb read that helps fill in a lot of information.

I was surprised how much I liked this book. I didn't think such a short book could contain much useful information, especially if combined with the author's personal history. The book delivers in spades. I realize now the reason the book is so short is the same reason virtually any other book on H bombs is short: most of the material is still classified. (Richard Rhode's, The Making of the Hydrogen Bomb, is a longish book. But less than 10% of it is actually about the design, assembly, and testing of H bombs.) If you read Rhodes and this book, you will end up knowing substantially everything there is to know about H bombs and the history of their development. The only way to know more, presumably, is to have a Q clearance. Disclaimer: I have not read or meaningfully perused Chuck Hansen's Swords of Armageddon, which are reputed to contain just about everything there is to know (unclassified) about the history of the development and testing of all U.S. nuclear weapons.

This is a normally very dry subject but this author makes the reading extremely enjoyable. My only caution is you MUST know a moderate amount about basic nuclear physics to get the most out of this book. At least know your basic atomic structure, The Nucleus, The Electron, The Proton and the Neutron and how they relate to the A & H Bombs. It would help if you also had a basic understanding of the Nuclear Chain Reaction and the difference between fusion (as in the process of atomic joining) and fission the (process of atomic separation).That said if you have the very basics I outline above well understood and you love reading about such things then reading this book will be both fun and insightful. While the author does try to make this subject very accessible to the layman there is little this or any author can do to Nuclear science painfully easy to understand to those who lack a love and understanding of basic nuclear physics.Building the H Bomb: A Personal History does a great job of blending his own personal story and those he worked with \ around in a fascinating narrative that kept me reading to the point I lost track of time. I read Building the H Bomb: A Personal History on buses and in my doctors waiting rooms and when reality demanded my attention it was always at the expense of the pleasures I had reading this book. I was engrossed in this subject matter quite unlike I have been in many books of this type. The enjoyable thing till reading Building the H Bomb: A Personal History, I never had the insight provided by a scientist that actually used one of these tube driven, hot cable laden ancient computing beasts.On so many levels this is a well written and fun to read book if you really love nuclear physics and the guys who made atoms for war and peace a reality. Nuclear weapons are an ugly reality but I must say I am SOOOO happy the USA got the Super \ H Bomb in time to effective counter the then Soviet Union. As for their being a Moral Nation I don't think there is such a thing. Man fouls everything he touches simply because; he is not perfect and never will be. I believe in the USA not because; our nation is perfect for we are far from perfect. I just happen to believe that our form of government allows us evolve as a nation that strives for a more perfect union or society. The H Bomb is an awesome responsibility. I simply pray that we as a country and a world continue to be worthy stewards of the atom whose power we have collectively unlocked.This book speaks also about the demands the atom made on the moral fiber of those scientists charged with first unlocking then putting to use its secrets in weapons of mass destruction. This book hits all the high points of the development of super weapons from one who was inside that highly select and secret circle. In Steamborn, we're introduced to Jacob, a teenage boy and resident of the city of Ancora who often finds himself in trouble. He's brilliant with gadgets and inventions as an apprentice to his mentor, Charles. While Jacob does have both of his parents, Charles is still like a father figure to him, and I loved their interactions. He is impressed by Jacob's devotion to their inventions and encourages his thoughts and ideas.Jacob's friend, Alice, is straight-laced and a rule follower but extremely caring and loyal. I loved their close friendship and the way it blossomed over the course of the story.While Steamborn does start a bit slowly, it soon picks up its pace and has a lot going for it. There's giant bugs, steampunk gadgets that are easy to imagine and understand, the struggle between the rich and the poor, and a mystery Jacob discovers about the city he's lived in for his entire life. An excellent start to an excellent trilogy!Steamforged gives us a look into the world outside of the city of Ancora and into the Deadlands and the city of Bollwerk. Jacob, Alice, Charles and Samuel (a spider knight) travel across the Deadlands to Bollwerk, and new characters are introduced. My favorite new character was Mary, who's not only a strong and independent woman but also an airship captain (go Mary!). I loved her!While Steamborn was more introductory, Steamforged brings much needed action and suspense to the trilogy. I looked forward to experiencing the places and people which were talked about in the first book.There's tension and I love delving into the differences between the poor and the rich because a lot of those parts of the story seem to parallel what's going on in the real world. I think there's a message in this story about the lengths the rich will go to in order to protect themselves no matter the heavy cost the poor ends up paying. Steamforged gave me a lot to think about with terrific characters and stellar writing. I loved it!Man, Steamsworn hit me hard right in the feels! Asher upped the ante with for his characters with this last installment in the Steamborn trilogy. The book was action packed from beginning to end, and there were moments where I think my heart stopped from being kept in suspense. My emotions were all over the place, and I couldn't believe how much was happening. It wasn't overwhelming at all, so don't worry about that.Steamsworn means so much to me because I love the characters fiercely. I feel their feelings and know their thoughts. They've become like real people to me with their hopes and fears.This last installment in the trilogy was satisfying, and while I'll miss the characters and their passion to fight for what's right, I'm happy with the way it ended.

This series is a combination of the post-apocalyptic, dystopian and steampunk genres. (Although it is not technically true steampunk, since that genre really includes the Victorian society and aesthetic as point to the steam-driven technology.) This boxed set includes all 3 books in the Steamborn series (Steamborn, Steamforged, and Steamsworn). It is set in a post-apocalyptic world in which humanity was all but wiped out and is slowly rebuilding society, but is now competing with mutated and enlarged bugs. (Some of the bugs are clear analogs to modern spiders, others are less distinctly recognizable). Humanity lives in enclaves and is not only rebuilding from the apocalypse, but also from a more recent war Technology is mostly steam-driven: Steam-driven trains, trucks, war machines, copters, and air-ships (dirigibles), but also includes bio-mechanics.The story follows a young, low-born tinker who, as protagonists are wont to do, gets into trouble with authorities, flees and then moves from situation to situation of increasing danger in order to reclaim his life. Well - sort of.The underlying message discusses the horrors of war, issues of class-ism, the ethics of of good men forced to do bad things and of bad men who enjoy doing bad things - and what the potential difference is.The books are well written and although the plot has a somewhat predictable arc, there are some twists and the characters are well developed and likeable. The world is well developed and the mechanics of the mechanisms are considered and practical (no magic or technological hand-waves, with the exception of the assumptions that bio-mechanics are possible.) Although the main character is definitely Jacob, the other supporting characters are given personality and have/play important roles. Jacob would not succeed without the others; a fact which he recognizes and which keeps him grounded. Alice, his friend and potential romantic interest is intelligent and strong in her own right. Charles, his mentor, is more than just a Yoda figure who gives instructions. Simon, his older friend, as a knight, serves as devil's advocate and naysayer, but is there, in full support, when things come down on their heads. Others also join the party as the story progresses.The third book ends without fully resolving the situation in the world, which means that there will hopefully be more books in the series - which I will happily purchase and read.

About the Author

Mark Thiessen has been a photographer with National Geographic since 1990 and on staff since 1997. He is widely published in National Geographic magazine, National Geographic Adventure, and National Geographic Traveler. In 1996, Thiessen began a personal photography project on wildland firefighters that took him to the front lines of wildfires every summer. To better understand the world of this little-known subculture, he became a certified wildland firefigheter. His photographs for the National Geographic cover story "Under Fire: Why the West Is Burning" earned first-place recognition by Pictures of the Year International. Thiessen also directs the National Geographic photo studio and was featured in Out There, a series aired on the National Geographic Channel. He lives in Washington, D.C.

WOW.That’s it.Nothing more need be written. But I will. This is a truly stunning book from National Geographic. It’s the kind of book you want to keep out on your coffee table so you can have it available to page through at any given time. The title tells the tale – the book is a spectacle. It is full of photos that make you go wow.It’s broken down into different sections; Chaos, Surprise, Beauty and Awe. The photos in each section relate to the titles tangentially. There is a caption explaining the photo but no superfluous words. You are meant to just enjoy the photos.There are all manner of images in this substantial book from landscapes, to cityscapes to portraits to nature photography. Some are very straightforward others make you search for the subject and/or the meaning. All of them make you pause. There is one photo early in of hundreds of Christmas ornaments. At first glance you would think there was nothing special about a shop selling ornaments but as you look at it you are drawn in and it’s a truly fascinating photo. It’s one of my favorites.Oh, there are Aurora photos. You know how I am about the Aurora.I found this book to be an amazing respite from all of the things that I found overwhelming since I received it. Watching the news lately hasn’t exactly been happy times so when it was too much a bit of spin through Spectacle was just the antidote. Immersing myself in the beauty of these photographs took me away from all that was bothering me.This book would make an awesome gift for anyone who loves photography. It’s a truly wonderful book that takes you away from the everyday into the world of Spectacle.I received a free copy for my honest review

My 13 year old 8th grader is an avid reader. Here is her review:--- "This book is filled with gorgeous, wondrous photographs! They are sorted into four groups: Chaos, Surprise, Beauty and Awe. The pictures are vividly colorful, visually entrancing and emotionally inspiring! It shows there are so many types of beauty: unexpected, simple, loud, amazing, calm, etc. It could be a great idea book for other photographers, to think outside the box or offer different perspectives. I definitely recommend this to fans of photography, nature, and anyone just looking for something beautiful in their lives! My mom says this is a perfect 'coffee table' book or conversation piece. I think it would make a pretty great gift!"
