The newest book in the Royal School of Needlework series, this little volume is one of the best. While light on basic how-tos, it has an extensive and nicely written history of beadwork (often given short shrift in these books), and has tons of stitch diagrams.Three techniques get a focus in the large stitches section of the book. First comes beading in needlepoint. You’ll see why, in great close-up pictures, you should run your thread back through a line of beads that should be straight. You’ll also see, in every one of these stitched samples, many different ways to enhance a stitch using beads. These samples are a tremendous spur to creativity, as are the pictures of stitched projects.The second and third sections are less directly applicable to needlepoint, but still contain plenty of ideas. The second section use beads in free embroidery (embroidery on cloth). Many of these stitches can be done on a counted ground, so these ideas can also be used in needlepoint.The final section covers beaded fringes. Because they hang off the edge of your work, these could easily embellish a finished bit of needlepoint. It’s an idea you rarely see, but one worth exploring.Much as I liked the book, there were shortcomings. First off the book is pretty sketchy with details and tips for beginning stitchers. If these techniques are new to you, buy Sundance’s book on beading (reviewed here) to get started and then graduate to this book. In spite of the wealth of information in the RSN volume, good introductory material is needed to make this “essential.”Unlike some of the other books in this series, there are no projects. Because the ideas here are so clever, I would have greatly enjoyed some projects, at the very least a sampler for each technique.Even so, the book is a great value and a wonderful resource for those interested in beading in needlepoint.

As usual, anything from the Royal School of Needlepoint is worth owning. Great instructions. Great photos. You name it. This book will teach you anything you need to know about beading. Especially good for people who want to bead on needlepoint canvas.

Bead Embroidery by Shelley Cox has useful hints. Unlike some of the other books in this series, there are no projects. I would have enjoyed some projects, or at the very least a sampler for each technique shown in the book.The book will make a good resource for anyone interested in beading or needlepoint.

Great helpful hints. I was interested mainly in beads while doing cross stitching. There are many great other hints with bead designs.

This book is a terrific dictionary style guide to bead embroidery. It very clearly shows traditional embroidery stitches and how to transition them to include beads. Very detailed and complete.

The valuable thing about the RSN embroidery guides is that they provide inspiration as well as how-to instructions. I appreciated some of ideas of using beads within embroidery stitches. I'm looking forward to trying some of these out in a future project.

This book arrived much earlier than expected, considering it was shipped from the UK. It's a handy go-to guide and I'm please with it.

A great beginner's book in that it describes everything from the tools to the techniques and designs. It explains how to execute the designs with easy to understand color illustrations and step-by-step photographs. Featured are inspiring photos of examples from the author's private collection. A joy for embroidery and beading fans.

I met Fairfield Porter back in the 60s and was taken by the fact that he included recognizable imagery while using the free filled brushes of the abstract expressionists. This book shows lesser known works.

Not the best of books on this artist.

Would have liked larger illustrations, but over- all a good sense of his art and environment. Need more information to get a better picture of his work.

Not a lot of work in this book and not a lot of written info on process but if you're desperate for all things Porter go for it. It's worth it to see some if his unfinished work just as insight into his process and thinking. The essay is around 9 pages and some of it is in other places like the Justin Spring biography. Sadly there is no affordable monograph available right now.

I was so excited about receiving this book on Fairfield Porter because there are no recent books written about his work. When the book arrived I was soooo disappointed by the color plates and content.Terrible, not one good painting or drawing in the book!!!!!

I love Porter's work and this book does display a lot of sketches and paintings not typically seen. However, the book itself is horrible. I don't know if some poor intern with little graphic design practice was in charge of this, if they had low resolution documentation that they didn't want to blow out, or if they were trying to save on printing costs...but this is such a waste of paper. Each spread only has one image, but the image does not fill the space of the page. Each page is about 11x9, one page is left BLANK and the other page holds on average an image that is 3-6 inches wide and no longer than half the length of the page. When you get this book you are really paying for glossy white paper and NOT beautiful prints of Porter's work because about 80% of this book is left blank. Horribly disappointed when this arrived in the mail.One redeeming quality: the article at the beginning written by Klaus Ottmann on Porter's creative process and the recipe for his painting medium. However this article is easily accessible online, save yourself some money. DO NOT BUY this book.

Fairfield Porter (1907 -1975) was an American realist painter whose works were flooded with a light that seems more than the sun can create. "When I paint, I think that what would satisfy me is to express what Bonnard said Renoir told him: make everything more beautiful." This very interesting though rather small catalogue from the Parrish Art Museum in Southampton exhibition in the Spring of 2010 titled FAIRFIELD PORTER: RAW share with the public many of the Museum's major archive of Porter's works. The fascinating part of the exhibition and the book is the sharing of sketches, many on masonite, many unframed, and many of ideas that never found their way to a completed canvas.Fairfield Porter was an art critic as well as a painter and so it is most appropriate that this catalogue includes an essay by another artist/critic; Frank O'Hara's 'Porter Paints a Picture' is as informative as it is alliterative. Porter was one of the group of artists who continued to paint the figure and the landscape when most American artists were committed to Abstract Expressionism. If his works seem rather flat now that apparent problem is more than overcome by his amazing use of light. Even in his interior paintings and sketches there is a quality of light that is almost eerie were it no defining such mundane ideas as those Porter chose to paint.The catalogue is well produced and is made more important by the learned essay by Klaus Ottmann - 'An Unfinished Quality: Fairfield Porter's Creative Process'. Would that there were more museums willing to publish the unfinished works of major artists that give us an opportunity to understand the choices and rejections of thoughts from a painter's mind. Is there anything nearer paradise on earth than a Capability Brown garden stretching into the distance around an English stately home? Gardening has always been a specialty of the English, and a must for the aristocracy. This book attempts to document the most memorably successful results found on country estates. Attempts, I say, because catching the essence of a garden in a photograph is not an easy task, and one at which the makers of this book do not entirely succeed, in my opinion. To be sure there are some impressively atmospheric images here; of the Mausoleum at Castle Howard for instance, or some mysteriously misty takes at Haddon Hall.Other images however are harshly, unnaturally colored, with reds leaping of the page. Some have artificially added blue skies, most notably that of the garden at Sudeley Castle, which looks like a cheap Seventies postcard. There is a graininess to the pictures as well, and some are printed out of focus. Thicker, glossy paper would have helped. All in all not what you would expect of such a highbrow (and high price) publisher like Rizzoli. An additional disappointment is that because 100 gardens are covered, we get to see only one or two images of each of them - the book only has just over 200 pages. To enjoy a really successful garden book of this kind, I would advise you to look out for the dazzling, newly published "The Gardens at Buckingham Palace" by Brown and Sykes.

I was very pleased with the book One Hundred English Gardens. It was absolutely delightful to read and look at the gorgeous pictures. I am returning to England for my third trip in September and this book really made me want to go now! The book arrived in a timely manner and was in very good condition. Pleased with the seller.

This book is an easy and enjoyable read, which can't be said for too many books written about chemicals and brain science. True to it's subject matter - dopamine - I found myself turning the pages quickly, eagerly anticipating what's next and reading the accompanying stories. It explains why, chemically, we are enamored with online buying, especially those companies that offer one-click and next day delivery (you know who you are), as well as the mind-numbing scrolls through social media feeds. The authors offer the importance of balancing dopamine hits to keep moving forward, and H&N brain chemicals (read the book...) to appreciate "what is." After reading this book I am much more aware of my own dopamine-seeking behaviors and able to consciously decide whether or not to act on them. And for that, I am grateful.

Relevant, credible and easy to understand! That’s an amazing combination. I found the information so helpful for my personal life and business. A must read!

Once I started reading The Molecule of More I couldn’t put it down. I was engrossed. The book is both engaging and informative. The Molecule of More dives into dopamine’s role in human behavior in a comprehensive and captivating manner. Dopamine is a chemical that is never really satisfied. It eagerly waits in anticipation of more. It has little regard for morality, emotions, rationality or how much one already has, subsequently propelling us to chase more…. sometimes for good and sometimes for not so good. If you want to understand how this neurochemical influences our everyday basic behavior or are curious about dopaminergic personality, start with this book. It’s well-written and compelling.

For those of us interested in how our brains produce behavior and how such behavior is mediated by our neurochemistry, this is an excellent guide. It is not too technical nor dumbed down; it strikes a nice balance that the reader can easily follow.The author offers a clear path for navigating our attachment to the hear and now (H & N) while skillfully planning for the future, using the former to provide the fuel (data) for the latter. Understanding the relationship is crucial as we are usually stuck in one realm or the other, failing to benefit from an integrated approach.I would very much like to hear what the author has to say about the origin of our neurochemical endowment. He does broach the subject but perhaps wisely leaves a fuller explication for another time as his main thesis concentrates on the practical application an understanding of the actual process can provide.I love exploring the many facets of our personality, motivation and compulsions. This exploration is an important contribution and the reader will benefit from reading it. It is very well written and follows an intelligent trajectory to bring us closer to an understanding of how we navigate our experience. Highly recommended.

Very Good WW2 history book. The writer did not seen to like Mac Arthur but is still good to read. The campaigns are cover very well.The Author seem to forget that MacArthur like F. D. Roosevelt gave us hope when there was none with the Japanese kicking our butt then.

Nathan Prefer's book on General Douglas MacArthur's "hopping" campaigns in Western New Guinea in 1944 is a well-crafted and detailed account of the twin difficulties encountered by U.S. Army combat units in carrying out MacArthur's strategic directives: The appalling New Guinea jungle terrain and the highly audacious tactics and tenacity of the Imperial Japanese Army. I found Prefer's portraits of MacArthur and one of his subordinates, Lieutenant General Robert Eichelberger, very revealing. Prefer details MacArthur's penchant for regularly issuing communiques announcing the successful completion of battles while they were still being hotly contested. MacArthur is also portrayed as being largely indifferent to the physical hardships endured by U.S. Army infantrymen in New Guinea (MacArthur never visited the front lines in order to gain a feel for the combat conditions and only visited secured battlefields and islands once the fighting was "officially" over). MacArthur's subordinate, Eichelberger, is portrayed by Prefer as the consummate general - a tough, no-nonsense officer who regularly visited the front lines and also kept his soldiers' ("my lads," as Eichelberger called them) best interests at heart. Nathan Prefer also reveals that MacArthur's treatment of the Australian Army soldiers under his command was no better, despite the fact that at the outset of the New Guinea campaign in 1942 it was Australian Army militia and regular Australian Army soldiers who fought the Imperial Japanese Army on New Guinea's Kokoda Trail and eventually pushed them back over the Owen Stanley mountain range, thereby saving New Guinea and allowing MacArthur to begin his "hopping" campaigns in Western New Guinea. MacArthur's New Guinea campaign was as bloody as any campaign in the Pacific - despite MacArthur's claim that he was economical with his soldiers' lives. Prefer's excellent work pays a long-overdue tribute to the valor, courage and tenacity of the U.S. Army officers and men under MacArthur's command who fought in, and won, the New Guinea campaign.
