I am the Executive Director of a small nonprofit with a Board of only 10 members.After attending a Board Governance conference, I returned to the office with more ideas than I could keep in my head. I ordered this little book and although I haven't read it page for page, it covers a great deal that was discussed in the conference. Before the next Board Retreat, I am thinking of ordering a book for each Board Member. Chapters cover most of the Board positions, but the value for me were the Appendices. I highly recommend this book for encouragement, ideas, and hopes that your Board works at its best level.

I ran (unsuccessfully) for a BoD position in a non-profit to which I belong, and really wanted to see information about the business of a board. In that way, this book was excellent.The assumption, though, is that all BoD are run well, and that they recognize the BUSINESS of the non-profit as well as its mission. Sadly, I find many don't. Many focus so much on the mission that they end up being inefficient, particularly in long-range planning and in budgeting. I see it over and over. The one in which I ran for office, for example, has no problem raising money, but has no concept of an operating budget and no interest in changing any business processes. Others I've seen spend so much time on fundraising that the mission sometimes suffers, or burn out volunteers with constant demands of the same few.I hope to find solutions. This book helped focus my thinking, but sadly more on what we need than on how I can help do it.

There are a TON of books out there about nonprofits & Boards & how to build a Board. Most are impractical for small nonprofits that don't have the bandwidth to implement even a fraction of their suggestions. Little Book of Boards is written specifically for a small nonprofit with one, maybe two employees. It's also for someone who's thinking about joining a Board, wants to join a Board, just started on a Board but with absolutely no Board experience. Erik wrote a thoroughly engaging book about a fictional small nonprofit & its newest Board Member that's easy to follow & completely realistic in incorporating into the fabric of my nonprofit.

Overall, this is a good book for very small nonprofits, encompassing the concerns of the board. It is well-organized and covers the spectrum of concerns in an easy-to-read manner. Further while it does cover dealing with a paid executive director, most of the material remaining is applicable to all volunteer organizations (AVO's).While the personal experiences of the author add to the flavor of the book's material, the text could have utilized more industry references and statistics to support the claims within. There remains a question of how well the suggestions would work outside the specific experience range of the author unfortunately, without such references. Further, the author admits to his bias as a past executive director and with some of the recommendations for nonprofit boards, such as the close interaction between the executive director and board chair in guiding overall strategy of an organization (as compared to other board members and the board chair, that bias is glaring.Still, the scope of activity and structure within it should make this a worthwhile resource for volunteers considering becoming board members and for those newly appointed in those roles. Overall, I recommend it.

This is a must read for anyone who is considering joining a non-profit board or someone who is already on a board. Gives you first hand information for the inner workings, your responsibilities as a board member, and what is normally expected of a board member.

Loved this book and wish I'd discovered it when I first got involved with my small non-profit. But I'm President now and I still found it useful. I wish I could give a copy to every new trustee.

Very informative, but still enjoyable to read. This is a great book for those who don't know much about boards. Hanberg lays out the basics with clear examples and explanations. Comprehensive enough to not leave you hanging, and simple enough for it to be a practical tool.

I cannot rate a book that got lost during Hurricane Florence in 2018 although it looks interesting with easy to follow instructions. I may have to purchase another one once things return to what they should be.

I loved the book and the characters. Fortunes Neck captures a period of time and offers a cast of characters that could be described as ordinary New England folk – yet the simplicity and plain spoken dialogue draws the reader in to a world that is both ordinary and profound. I loved the characters and the window into their worlds that the author provided. Sometimes I laughed out loud and sometimes I found myself nodding in agreement thinking he hit the nail on the head there. Mr. McDermott’s voice, his characters, and his story draw you in and at the end I found I was reluctant to leave such company. Looking forward to his next story!

Following the huge earthquake in Haiti I was interested in volunteering to go there as an aid worker for up to a month. I'm not a nurse but was willing to do anything required. However I learnt that I would have to provide some thousands of euro to the NGO taking volunteers. This was explained by saying that it would cover flights, accommodation, food and travel insurance. But I didn't have money to give, especially if I would not be earning for that period. I'm self-employed. To me it seemed that I could give my money or my time but not both. Then a cholera outbreak (brought by Nepalese troops it turned out) meant that no aid workers were allowed to go, so I contributed a story to a charity anthology instead.Aid volunteering, especially in the area of healthcare which is the subject of this book, is a growth industry. Judith Lasker tells us that over a million people went abroad from America during 2007. Having read 'Disaster Capitalism' by Anthony Loewenstein I read her book following the money as much as anything. Sure enough, Judith who researched Haiti, Ghana, Ecuador and Niger, found that first-world governments have been soured towards handing aid to possibly corrupt nations and dictators, preferring to sponsor NGOs (non government organisations) or hand contracts to private companies. But if the countries dealt with the corruption they would be able to afford a health service, so essentially the outside aid was prolonging the corruption. Some long-established NGOs are seen as slow-moving and cumbrous, so individuals or small groups self-organise. While she managed to get a charity staffer to tell her that volunteer youth workers were not expected to do a good job - the purpose of their trip was to pay the charity and to be tapped for money again and again.With little training, students and office workers on vacation will have a varied experience, Judith found, as they may not speak the local language or understand customs, while facilities will be basic; even water restrictions and cockroaches can spoil the trip for some. Young people would be only asked to do basic work in most cases, but these poor countries are not short of manual labour so they were taking a local person's job. Students often wanted to put aid work on their CV, but colleges, says Judith, had wised up to the fact that mostly rich kids could afford to go. Nurse trainees were concerned that if they were not licensed to carry out procedures in America, how come they were expected to do them abroad?A charity set up to focus on eye care or fistula repair, say, might do no other work, arrive, see only those who were in the area and depart. A much better way of operating was when they scheduled a trip to work with a mobile clinic and villagers were let know in advance that they would be coming. Volunteers who came prepared to do anything asked of them were valuable but those who were fussy and kept distracting the permanent workers were a nuisance. The best contribution Judith found was when a small team, a surgeon and wife, went out every year to carry out spinal operations and train the local doctors.Some groups were run by missionaries and one lady told a conference that the work was about prayer first, aid second. I'm sure that's very helpful to people with parasites or polio - sorry. A doctor actually learned from a local that the insistence on a prayer session before the clinic opened was driving people away. The doctor quietly dropped the prayers and got on with the medical aid.There isn't space to do justice to this fascinating and honestly written book, which contains well analysed feedback from aid workers both permanent and voluntary, and from Judith's own experience - on a trip to Haiti, two of the aid workers were solely there to prepare PR materials for the NGO. Read it and be inspired or cautioned, or both. This book will interest anyone in the medical field, or a aid donor, a charity worker, or a person thinking of going abroad as an individual.

Looks like not all those in recipient areas are impressed either.Privatization of health services, partly required by the World Bank and IMF in response to mounting foreign debt) have brought a sharp decline in public services. At the same time, poor countries have experienced a sharp increase in chronic ailments that require ongoing medical attention often unavailable. Mass media and celebrities have helped fuel the increase in volunteering, and in some cases the goal of governments in supporting volunteering is to provide an alternative to military service. Many cruise lines offer one-day service opportunities as excursions in the countries they visit. Some do it to get into medical school.

Their purpose is to encapsulate?in short paragraphs arranged in an A-to-Z format?whatever data are available on the subject. Unfortunately, the results aren't always reliable. Both Grossman (The ABC-Clio Companion to the Environmental Movement, LJ 3/15/95) and military analyst Summers (Korean War Almanac, LJ 2/15/90) provide references, but they rely heavily on nonscholarly sources, and the information they offer is sometimes inaccurate or simplistic. For example, Grossman writes that Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Tariq Aziz was born "to a Christian Chaldean Arab family of the Alawite faith," a statement that simply boggles the mind. Alawi Muslims are in fact part of an offshoot sect of Shia Islam. Although there may be some ties with Christianity, they are cultural, not religious, in nature and substance. Aziz, certainly a key player in the war, receives no entry in Summers. In another example, the controversy over war casualties is not properly covered. Both volumes report official U.S. figures (9000 Iraqi soldiers dead) although Summers's discussion is superior since it provides arguments on both sides. Both volumes provide numerous photographs, even if most are of weapons systems, and there is an abundance of portraits. Even CNN's Christianne (Christine in Grossman!) Amanpour makes it. There are some valuable appendixes?Grossman lists 92 useful documents under one cover, ranging from key executive orders to David Frost's March 27, 1991 interview with General Schwarzkopf, and Summers offers a brief historical background?but even these must be examined with care. While both volumes are comprehensive enough and might be useful in public libraries, they offer little more than scripted entries for serious scholars. I really wanted to love this book as I have been a long-time follower of Tatyana’s YouTube channel and have made multiple recipes featured there. However my very first experience with a recipe from her book was a sad one... 2+ hours and more than $25 dollars worth in ingredients wasted... I attempted to make her Chocolate Hazelnut Crepe Cake and followed the recipe to the T. All seemed to be going well until the frosting completely curdled at the end and became runny. I did question the instructions to beat the frosting for a whole minute on high speed after combining cheese and whipped cream mixtures... but trusted the book and even used the stop watch to make sure everything was precise. I should have followed my first instinct and just folded the two parts together gently. Needless to say the frosting was a complete disaster and separated even more before I finished assembling the cake. Like another reviewer said... it seemed that the author may not have actually tested out the recipes herself. I have concerns about trying anymore recipes from this book... I wish I could get refund but it’s too late. First picture is from the book and second is my sad looking cake (all attempts were make to wipe up the runny icing...)

When I first opened this cookbook I skimmed through it and I loved seeing that each recipe had a colorful photo and a little introduction about that specific cake. It was very hard to choose which cake to bake first, but since it was late in the evening and didn't want to make a run to the grocery store I settled for a simple Poppy Seed Smetanik. I brought the cake to work and it devoured immediately! I was impressed how easy it was to follow the recipe and I felt confidant in my baking. Also, I appreciated having the "inactive prep time" listed - HUGE plus!

do recommend this cookbook with simple detailed recipes for classic European pastries- photos of every recipe- no exotic ingredients- includes both volumetric and mass for ingredients (cups of flour vs grams of flour) - both are provided- detailed simple-to-follow instructions- recipes are not very complicated - but may require time, such as preparing buttercream separately and slicing a cake into multiple thin layers- suited for novice bakers - but knowledge of stiffly beating egg whites and whipping cream are must-have skillsThe reason for the 4-star rating is that the recipes are so GREAT, you wish you had more recipes of other European classic pastries. Hence, deducted one star.HINT to author / publisher - continue with the series and publish recipes for other classic European café pastries - maybe books dedicated by region:- Eastern European,- German / Austrian / Hungarian,- French / British,- Scandinavian / Nordic, etc.

I have many of the recipes marked for future baking projects. Made the Bird's Milk Cake yesterday and am getting ready to put the final layer on this morning. Tatyana uses some products that I have not used in the past: sweetened condensed milk, agar gelatin but, I like learning new ways to do things. I live alone so it is always a major deal to make a cake using whip cream that has a short life. So if any turn out to be great, my neighbors will have to suffer through being "testers" for me and the cakes! It can get a little expensive to buy the ingredients called for that go above and beyond what I would normally have in my pantry and fridge, ie. lots of whip cream, the cans of condensed milk etc. But it is so much fun to learn something new.....I will be a baker to the end. Wish she could do a class on Craftsy website. I have taken many of their classes and it is such a great way to learn some new techniques.

I wonder if the author followed her own recipes: I just finished making Raspberry Lemon Macaron Cake for my daughter’s 21 BDay, I bake a cake for her every year and never so many things go wrong. I admit this was my second attempt to make Macarons and I couldn’t find gel coloring but I’ve read somewhere that I can use powder -it was bright pink at first but turned cream at the end of baking so my fault, but curd was too watery, even after I tripled the amount of starch, I had to add a few table spoons of flour to thicken it. Cream frosting separated as soon as I added cheese mixture to the whipped cream, it became like cottage cheese. I had to strain it and whip again. It was too soft to hold the weight of top layers. With the exception of food coloring I followed the recipe to a T, even bought a food scale specifically for this. At the end it took me 6 hours, it doesn’t look like a picture and I am afraid to try another recipe from the book.

So excited to try these recipes!!! Presentation of this book is outstanding❤️ I’m a very visual person and I absolutely Love the full page pictures of each recipe! 😍😍

I was looking forward to this book all week since I wanted to read it the first day it was released. Unfortunately, the book is incredibly hard to read. It's as if she's writing for a blog and no one had edited the writing (describing occurrences that go on for 3 pages when it could easily be described in 3 sentences). There are so many repeat mentions of the same stories (references to one particular pair of sweat pants is one example among many). I deeply regret making this purchase and probably will not buy anything recommended by the fashion press or anything as publicized as this book.If you're a follower of blogs/fashion, it is likely you would not like this book. For people who do not follow blogs or fashion, it may be an interesting read, although hard to actually get through.

As someone who's spent a chunk of her career on the fringe of the NYC fashion/journalism scene, I really wanted to like--possibly be inspired by--this book, but ultimately these "essays" were disappointing. Odell repeats herself over and over, which makes me think she only has a handful of stories from her past she feels are worth relaying (and--oh, gee--they happen to be the ones full of name drops). The whole chapter about the VS show felt like a random stab at "real" journalism, but she blatantly admits there wasn't a story there worth reporting in the first place. Why on earth, then, did it wind up in the book?!

I've been following Amy's writing online since she started out at the Cut, and have always loved her hilarious & witty writing style. This book is a really fun look into the fashion industry from someone who's followed it closely for years but never really succumbed to the craze of it all. My background is in tech, so fashion is a bit of a mystery to me, although I can appreciate it. If nothing else, books like this are a reminder that every industry is a bit wild and crazy when you're on the inside. I definitely enjoyed reading it!

She tries too hard in her writing, which felt unnatural and far-fetched.No need to explain all and everything in excruciating detail! Being succinct would have been more appreciated by the readers.This book didn't inspire me, on the contrary very exhausting tuning into it...

She is too cautious .... The book is so boring..... Every time you think she's going to tell us something we don't know, a new chapter comes along , drawing out a scene few ever see or care about .👎

I'm going to school to work in the communications side of fashion, and like the author, sometimes find myself laughing at my peers. This is such a great and hilarious book that takes the 'snooty' out of fashion. It follows her career from begginings, reporting at parties and being awkward at it, to being an editor, and all the in betweens; great light read.

I was hoping this would be a good read for my fashion students, but I couldn't finish it. It wasn't interesting enough.

Tales From the Back Row takes you behind the scenes of the New York fashion world and the celebrity party circuit--rarified places few of us get to enter. Odell describes her experiences as a young reporter and blogger working her way up from the bottom rung of the journalism ladder. She sees through the fashion world's fancy facades to reveal how ridiculous much of what goes on there really is. While the book is funny, entertaining and a very enjoyable read, I also found it heartfelt and honest. I think it will appeal to most everyone looking for a fun read. Millennials and people interested in fashion and the media will find it indispensable.

What a beautiful story! I have enjoyed all of Jennifer Beckstrand’s books, and I’m always glad to see Anna and Felty Helmuth up to their matchmaking tricks. This time their efforts are for their granddaughter Cassie, who has left the Amish way of life and is studying art history. When Anna meets the handsome doctor, Zach Reynolds, she knows she has found the perfect match for Cassie. However, Cassie’s mother and brothers want her safely back in the fold, and they’ll stop at nothing to get her there. Meanwhile, Zach wonders if he’ll ever be able to rise above his past and win Cassie’s trust and her heart.I loved this book! Jennifer’s characters are so vibrant. I closed the book feeling as if I’d found some new best friends. It was romantic and sweet, yet still dealt with real issues and problems. Huckleberry Hearts explores the meaning of real love through the relationship of Cassie and Zach, and it contrasts the love of a grandmother who allows her granddaughter to be herself and find her own path in life, and the behavior of Cassie’s family, whose actions are in the name of love but hurt her deeply. This is also a story about the healing power of forgiveness. Beautifully told, Jennifer. Thanks!

"Huckleberry Hearts" (The Matchmakers of Huckleberry Hill Book 6) By Jennifer Beckstrand is the 6th book in this series and the last one,( which is sad for this reader), as I loved each one and wanted to read more match matching schemes by Annie Helmuth.Even though this is the 6th book and some of the same characters are in each book, each book is a standalone and a complete story, and not redundant."Huckleberry Hearts" as well as all the other books in this series focuses on Annie and Felty Helmuth and their match matching. They are not your normal Amish couple. Annie loves to knit colorful sweaters, which is not normal, Amish don't usually wear anything but black. She also loves to knit pot holders and give them away.In this book Annie wants to match her granddaughter Cassie with an English doctor. Cassie has left the Amish way of life. But Cassie and the doctor don't immediately connect because the doctor is like every other English male that Cassie has learned to avoid.Do these two get together? I bet you want to know, so read this story. You won't be sorry that you did! These books have life messages within the pages such as this one quote “Even when we sin, even when our trouble is of our own making, Jesus doesn’t abandon us.” There are also moments in these books that has you laughing out loud.Yes, these books would be good books for anyone that likes the Amish genre or not and for anyone that likes a clean love stories and definitely for anyone that wants to escape reality for a short time.I asked Jennifer Beckstrand in an online book chat "how did you come to write stories about match making and she replied I try to match make for my kids. So I guess that is why these books are so fun to read!I have given "Huckleberry Hearts" five stars. I was given an e-copy of Huckleberry Hearts from the Celebrate Lit Blogging Team in exchange for an honest review.I really enjoyed "Huckleberry Hearts" that I had to get the rest of the collection from Amazon.

This is one of the best in this series. Felty & Anna Helmuth are matchmaking one again. This time it's different though. Their granddaughter Cassie has left the Amish to go to University. She majored in Art History. Anna has picked out her young doctor for her. Anna needs to have a cancerous spot removed from the bottom of her foot. The doctor removes it and Cassie moves in with her grandparents to help with Anna's care. Cassie & Zach (the doctor) went to the same University. Cassie wanted nothing to do with him because of his reputation at the University. Well when Anna picks out a match for her grandchildren there is no stopping her. Zach has arranged for a visiting nurse to visit to change the dressing and care for her. Anna uses Cassie cellphone to call Zach to ask him to come to the house 3 times a week to replace the nurse. He agrees to do it. He doesn't recognize Cassie, but believes her to be an angel.. He is very interested, but she wants nothing to do with him. Seeing his care of her grandmother, Cassie begins to notice him in a new light. This story has so twists and turns. Turmoil with Cassie mother & brother who want her to be Amish. Faith restored, faith lost only to be rekindled. Death, accidents every thing needed to make a book difficult to put down. A great read!

The Huckleberry Hill series will be terrible missed, Please Jennifer, WRITE more of them. I feel like I've lost some dear friends. Loved the series, Anna and Felty make me wish that my grandparents were still here with us. Loved each story and all the characters therein. Loved to read about Anna's cooking and her knitting. Just a great series to curl up with. Hope you enjoy reading all the stories as much as I did.

One of the best books I have read I love to keep up with Anniebannie and Felty such a sweet couple love their antics. So glad this was not the last of the series that there will be more to come. Well worth the read, funny, sweet and so simple. I have read all of them and looking forward to many more of Huckleberry Hearts....

Oh my, I keep thinking Jennifer can't top this book and when I read the next one in this series she proves me wrong!!!! What a fantastic job she has done here and oh did she bring on the tears. She just continues to pull me into this family further and further, needing more stories about them. And yes, I still love Anna and Felty, they are the BEST!

This whole series has been wonderful!!! The characters are down to earth and it is interesting to watch their development. Some of the lines in these books are "classics"!!! I am just glad I never had to eat any of Anna's food concoctions. I would love to see one of her pot holders though. Felty was a dear and devoted husband...a real sweetheart!
