This book was all I expected and more! I was timid about working with silk before I purchased Sara Lamb's book on spinning silk. She touches on everything one needs to know on silk spinning; the different types and grades, dying, spinning, weaving, knitting, as well as examples of her mistakes from her personal experiences of working with silk. The pictures are quite beautiful and it is obvious that she is a very talented fiber artist! The information she shares in her book is much needed info that is usually only barely touched upon in other spinning books. I love silk and am very excited to begin spinning it on its' own. Previously, I was a bit intimidated to try spinning silk without blending with other fibers, and attempting to dye it was something I have only thought of doing! After reading Sara's book, I feel more confident about working with silk. It's all here; everything you need to know about working with silk!! I highly recommend this for anyone that has ever wanted to work with silk fiber but was intimidated! Well worth the price!!

Love this book for all the educational content. The inspirations are wonderful, just wish there had been a link to one or two of the items in the Project Gallery, with instructions as to how it was sewn together. All in all, this is a wonderful resource.

I wasn't able to see much information about this book at the time that I requested it, so I chose based on the title. I'm a big fan of Cook's Illustrated, and I hoped this title would round out my other recipe books for two with actual meal menus, or even one-pot meals. It offers neither of those, so it was almost a complete disappointment for me. This appears to be a gift-type book for beginner cooks, so maybe it's a good housewarming gift (although one of others I list below might be better even for that).But here's the good/bad, IMO:Pros:1. Full-color photos for each recipe. I really prefer photos for inspiration when I'm sorting out a week's meals, so I was glad to see them here. This is the single advantage this cookbook has over some other titles in this category.2. All recipes make two (often generous) servings. No math required to cut down larger recipes.3. Nothing too complicated. Recipes are pretty easy to follow, without really advanced skills needed.4. Nice intro sections for beginners. There are decnet tips for hardware in the kitchen (pans, pots, etc.) and how to shop "smarter" for two.5. Two-page intro spread divides recipes by category, like "keeping it light" and "no need for takeout." BUT I don't really find these categories all that intuitive or useful. "Game day grub" is only likely to be useful from time to time - why not "fall/winter meals" or "holidays" or "slow cooker specials"? By the way, most of the categories they list have precisely 3 recipes, so don't expect a ton of "easy weeknight dinners" or "one-pot meals." You'll get 3 of each.6. Each recipe only takes one page. No flipping back and forth to complete the recipe.Cons1. Nothing new from The Complete Cooking for Two Cookbook: 650 Recipes for Everything You'll Ever Want to Make. If you already own that book, you already own all these recipes. Given that the Complete version has hundreds more recipes, it's arguably a far better deal, even though it doesn't have as many pretty pictures, and you may have to turn pages in the middle of a recipe.2. Really basic. This is only a con if you're not a beginner, of course. But I think the title should make it clear that this is book intended for new cooks.3. No menus!! Since it's called "dinners for two," one might assume (as I did) that there'd be lots of suggestions to serve entree A with sides B and C, or that there'd be lots of one-pan meals, or that there'd at least be a section listing menus. Nope. None of those things. It's just a bunch of main courses, and you're on your own for sides, wine/beer pairings, dessert ideas, anything that really makes these complete "dinners." Given that this book is beginner-oriented, this seems like a serious oversight.4. Info could be much better organized. It's a slog to read through the excessive text for the good bits. For example, the intro includes some paragraphs on quantities you should buy of various sides if you're shopping for two, like brussels sprouts, potatoes, greens, etc. But instead of a handy chart or even bullet points that make it easy to scan and/or look up, it's a series of wordy paragraphs. They could have included a ton more info if they'd thought this through better.5. Recipes aren't very organized. They're grouped by protein, but there aren't dividers within the book to delineate the sections. Nor does the organization within sections make sense - for example, why not put all the Italian-style chicken recipes together?6. Uninspired recipes. Most of the recipes they chose for this book are pretty easy to find with the most basic internet search: burgers, chicken piccata, lasagna, manicotti, eggplant parmesan, and so on. I've tried to make meal plans from this cookbook, and just can't get excited about anything (or I don't need a cookbook to make it, like spaghetti).7. No nutritional info. There's plenty of room left on most of the recipes for even basic calorie, fat, protein info. Lack of this info is a strike against this cookbook for sure, especially considering its other shortcomings.Overall, I'll likely offer this cookbook to a young, aspiring home cook to try their hand at some basic American recipes from a book with pretty pictures and reasonable instructions. But I recommend one of several other cookbooks if you want any of the above "cons" addressed: The Complete Cooking for Two Cookbook: 650 Recipes for Everything You'll Ever Want to Make, or Healthy Cooking for Two (or Just You): Low-Fat Recipes with Half the Fuss and Double the Taste; or One Pan, Two Plates: More Than 70 Complete Weeknight Meals for Two, or One Pan & Done: Hassle-Free Meals from the Oven to Your Table, or even the delightful The Pleasures of Cooking for One. While you're at it, you might as well get a copy of Small-Batch Baking: When Just Enough for 1 or 2. . . Is Just Enough!, because dessert.

It had many of the same recipes as the Americas Test Kitchen cookbook for Two.

Great pared down recipes. It is nice to be able to cook for two and not have tons of leftovers.

There are a wealth of colored photos of various bowls, which helps illustrate the many described variations. About the Author

Dr. James Rumbaugh is one of the leading object-oriented methodologists. He is the chief developer of the Object Modeling Technique (OMT) and the lead author of the best-selling book Object-Oriented Modeling and Design. Before joining Rational Software Corporation in October 1994, he worked for more than 25 years at General Electric Research and Development Center in Schenectady, New York. He has been working on object-oriented methodology and tools for many years. He developed the DSM object-oriented programming language, the state tree model of control, the OMT object modeling notation, and the Object Modeling Tool graphic editor. The foundations for the OMT notation were developed more than 10 years ago with Mary Loomis and Ashwin Shah of Calma Corporation. The OMT methodology was developed at GE R&D Center with coauthors Mike Blaha, Bill Premerlani, Fred Eddy, and Bill Lorensen. Dr. Rumbaugh received his Ph.D. in computer science from MIT. During his Ph.D. research under Professor Jack Dennis, Dr. Rumbaugh was one of the inventors of data flow computer architecture. His career has dealt with semantics of computation, tools for programming productivity, and applications using complex algorithms and data structures. Dr. Rumbaugh has published journal articles on his work and has spoken at leading object-oriented conferences. He writes a regular column for the Journal of Object-Oriented Programming. Dr. Rumbaugh is the lead author of the recent best-selling book Object-Oriented Modeling and Design, published by Prentice Hall. His latest book, OMT Insights: Perspectives on Modeling from the Journal of Object-Oriented Programming, was released in October 1996. He and his colleagues developed the OMT methodology described in the book based on real-world applications at GE, and they have worked to extend the original methodology. He has taught courses based on the methodology to different audiences around the world, ranging from one-hour seminars to intensive several-day training courses. He has a B.S. in physics from MIT, an M.S. in astronomy from Caltech, and a Ph.D. in computer science from MIT. During his career at GE, he worked on a variety of problems, including the design of one of the first time-sharing operating systems, early work in interactive graphics, algorithms for computed tomography, use of parallel machines for fast image generation, VLSI chip design, and finally, object-oriented technology. Jim developed OMTool, an interactive graphical editor for manipulation of object model diagrams. The editor is commercially available. In addition, he led a five-year programming effort producing production-quality software. In addition, Jim was the manager of the Software Engineering Program at GE, where he led a team of eight to ten Ph.D. and M.S. scientists performing research in software engineering in the areas of algorithm development, programming languages, program proving, and VLSI computer-aided design. In addition, he performed personal research. Jim developed Chipwright, an interactive graphical CAD system for VLSI layout with incremental design rule checking. He also led a team of four programmers in implementation. Jim developed and implemented the object-oriented language DSM, combining object-oriented concepts with database concepts and distributed it within GE for use on production applications. The language was heavily used at Calma Corporation and was extensively extended based on user feedback with a preliminary version. Jim also developed Vista, a hierarchical interactive standard graphics system (similar to the PHIGS system) written in the object-oriented DSM language. He implemented user-interface applications based on this system, including a configuration-management tool and a user-interface generation tool. Jim developed the concept of state trees, a structured extension of finite state machines incorporating a new model of object-oriented control. He applied it to the design of user interfaces, and the technique was used as a main aspect of the CHIDE user-interface system developed by colleagues at GE-CRD. Later, it was used in the OMTool object editor. Jim also developed the Flow Graph System, a generic interactive graphic system for controlling a network of design engineering jobs, including management of multiple versions of data and coordination of information flow among applications. He received a patent on the underlying concepts. In addition, Jim developed algorithms for the reconstruction of images for computerized tomography using fewer input points and with reduced noise in the reconstructed images. He also developed algorithms for display of three-dimensional images in real time using array processors, and he developed Parallax, a language for programming pipelined array processors. Jim has served on various committees, including the OOPSLA Program Committee and the TOOLS Program Committee. Ivar Jacobson, Ph.D., is “the father” of many technologies, including components and component architecture, use cases, modern business engineering, and the Rational Unified Process. He was one of the three amigos who originally developed the Unified Modeling Language. He is the principal author of five best-selling books on these methods and technologies, in addition to being the coauthor of the two leading books on the Unified Modeling Language. Ivar is a founder of Jaczone AB, where he and his daughter and cofounder, Agneta Jacobson, are developing a ground-breaking new product that includes intelligent agents to support software development. Ivar also founded Ivar Jacobson Consulting (IJC) with the goal of promoting good software development practices throughout teams worldwide. Grady Booch, is the Chief Scientist at Rational Software Corporation and developer of the Booch Method of object-oriented analysis and design. This book has 4 parts. Part 1, Background, contains an UML Overview - UML summary, goals, complexity, assessment and concept areas - and a short overview on models, their meaning and purposes. Part 2, UML Concepts, contains an UML Walkthrough that summarizes all UML views, followed by short chapters on each one of the views, one on Profiles and one on the UML Environment. Part 3 contains the Reference. Part 4 contains appendices.Part 3, the Reference, actually what the book has been edited for, contains a Dictionary of Terms listed in alphabetical order. Each entry is structured as follows: The entry name, a short definition of a few sentences, the semantics of the term, its notation and, as necessary, a discussion and the history.This is a reference book, not a user's guide nor a tutorial. It acts as a dictionary to UML terms and mainly follows the same principles as for an English language dictionary. It's not unusual for a definition sentence of an entry to call another entry that in turn calls another one, and so on. Entry descriptions are mostly given in text form, with the support of figures wherever necessary. Language is often elaborate, not always straightforward. However, taken into account the detailed terms coverage and description provided in this book, few of them really remain inaccessible.As for an English language dictionary, the linear reading of this book will be of little help to the learning of the language.

This book has wonderful examples that are easy to understand and illustrate the concepts easily. I relied on this book when working on my project for my class where I needed to design a Inventory Management System for the parts dept of a Auto dealership.

This is the authoritative reference manual to UML, written by the creators of UML. The reference is complete (at least as far as I can tell).A CD-ROM is included with the book. This CD-ROM has the complete book as a PDF file, with extensive cross references (as links). I usually hate to read lengthy material on the computer screen and I usually prefer a (paper) book, but the PDF file on the CD-ROM is really great. The cross references makes the PDF file easier to use than the book. (The "standard" document on UML from OMG is also included on the CD-ROM).The book is written in a formal and boring style. Another thing that makes the book less enjoyable to read is the layout of the text. The lines are too long, and the spacing between the lines is inadequate.The main part of the book is the alphabetically ordered reference. Before the reference part, the book has a short (85 pages) overview/introduction to UML. When I read the paper book I could not understand who would benefit from this text: the text is too harsh for the novice, but lacks all the details an advanced user would be looking for. However, on the cross referenced CD-ROM this text turned out to be a valuable part.The book is a very unbiased reference. This is also a weak side of the book. You will not get any advice about good practices, or useful ways to apply UML for different design organizations.

This book is one in a series of three by the three amigos. It is certainly the most authoritative and accurate of all three (the other two being very fuzzy in places). The book consists of the following major sections:I: Background (some history) II: UML concepts (static, use case, statechart and other 'views') III: ReferenceThis book is pure syntax and can answer most of the questions that you might have about UML syntax. However, this book is not for beginners because it assumes (in my opinion) that you have applied UML to real-life situations. I find the book to be well-written (even if it is fairly dry) and compares favouably with other books in the UML series. There are different ways that you can use this book. First, you can consult it to check of you are using the correct UML syntax in your applications. Second, you can use it to deteremine what you have still to learn in UML (for example, activity diagrams, statecharts). This book should complement the other, more application-specific UML books. For example, it could be seen as a follow-up of Fowler's somewhat outdated UML Primer.It would have been a good idea if the authors had included a complete test case showing how all the specific 'views' are documented and how they fit together. UML has about 11 different views and which one to use and when will be a major undertaking if you are embarking on a first project.This book will be outdated as soon as the new UML 2.0 specification is ready. Do the authors have plans for a new version of their book "UML Reference 2.0"?

This book is by no means an introductory text. It assumes you already know UML. I do not think it would be of any value to managers or students. It is also of little value to developers that are happy downloading the 808 page UML specification and crunching through it. For the power UML engineer that needs to refer to the UML constructs, elements and semantics and discover new ones quickly when designing systems, this book will come in very handy indeed. Unlike other (valuable) UML books, this one will come down from the bookshelf often.

I do a lot of UML modelling, and I keep this book by my desk at all times. It has in-depth information, is well-written, and is well-organized.The Reference Manual and the Users Guide are generally sold as a pair. Quite frankly, if you have the Reference Manual, then you don't need the Users Guide.If you are just learning UML and are already familiar with any formal design methodologies, then you can do just fine with the Reference Manual alone. However, if you are new to graphical modeling in general, you may want to buy "UML for Dummies" to serve as a useful introduction.
