A real work of art. A meditation of working at sea in winter. Not a classic sea book w text and informative captions, just photos of the violent sea and fishermen working, and journal entries. I really liked it, but not for everyone. I sat in a chair on a cold,rainy day w a cup of tea and really enjoyed it. Very much an art book.

It should have been noted in the description of this book that all hand written entries are in French. I purchased this as a gift for an elderly commercial fisherman who spent over 55 years at sea. How many old fishermen do you know that can speak let alone read French? The pictures are excellent and most of the narrative is fine. However, it just wasn't what I expected.

It also includes excerpt from Jean's diary, hand-drawing, and page-clippings. Very rich media combining with visual images. We can taste some subtle changes of photographer's body and mind, which is behind the scene.A raw and original presentation of images presents a powerful record of struggle between human and nature.Forget Titanic. Jean Gaumy's are some moving images, from heart.
